First of all, i would like to comment on # 86 review. You are a motherf***ing piece of sh** to say that johnny cash's performance sucked. He was a great man (R.I.P) and you are a total sh** head to say anything less. I believe that was an awesome performance and it made me realize a few things. I believe we all knew of his past but i don't believe this sh** about his drug usage and stopping to breath sh** you said. I hope you die and burn in hell.

This is the best song ever. Those who say cash took this song from NIN, his producer was the one that got the idea of Cash doing this song, it is much much better than NIN nails version, Tanks JC.

I'm sorry, this was just an afterthought because several people had a hard time understanding the content of the video. The video is a bit of a biography. The references to Christ are reference to Mr. Cash's eventually following of Christianity & his work with Billy Graham. If you read the short biography of him on the VH-1 website, it will clear up many of the questions about the content of the video. The struggles, addiction, imprisonment, divorce, more addiction, problems with record lables after many years of service...it's briefly covered in their article.

In reading several of the reviews for Johnny Cash's version of Hurt, several thoughts come to mind. First, the song without a genre is terrific. It's lyrics speak about the pain of addiction and the committment to a profession, such as entertainment, that controls one's life. Second, it's likely that when young Trent is in his 70's (if he's still around) his performances will be a little slower and more resonant. Taking his time to carefully present his thoughts because he won't be able to perform with the vigor of his former self.

Johnny Cash's version of 'HURT' is much better than the rest out there. His version of the song tells the story of his life, this song can tell many stories but with every story the song has a different meaning. Either good, bad, sad this song is the best, thanks Cash for this awsome song you delivered us, R.I.P. And rest in peace Eddie Guerrero.

There can't really be anything negative to say about Johnny Cash. His sound revolutionized the music industry for the rest of time and is known to go down in the history books. I salute this man because he is an acoustical genius. God Bless Johnny Cash and may he look down on all of us musicians. The song hurt was made great by nine inch nails and then turned classic with the awesome voice of johnny cash to urn it in his own muse, Thanks for the music and thanks for making us feel again.

It is not a question of who performed this song better: Trent or Cash. Trent wrote it and did an amazing job of the song and it spoke to Cash and he poured his own emotions into the song and give it a different flavor than Trent's version. Both are exceptional, and Cash is most definitely tipping his hat to Trent for writing such a exceptionally meloncholy masterpiece. Trent's version was raw and biting, Cash leant the perspective of an aging man who spends many long hours in retrospect, reliving his early years, wishing he could change this or that. Both versions are poignant and it is only a further testament to Trent's songwriting abilities that the song can be sung by another and come out so amazingly powerful.

This song is amazing by both people. Trent Reznor put his pain into it also. Just because he wasn't as old as Johnny Cash and didn't go through all Johnny has doesn't mean he's never been hurt! When I heard NIN's version I cried cause I thought it was so powerful...Then I heard Johnny Cash's version..also powerful..You can hear the hurt in his voice and if you didn't know who wrote it you could have sworn Cash did from his personal life. I guess I am just trying to say is give them both a chance don't be all like Johnny's is better...or Trent's is better. Listen to them both eyes shut in a dark room and just listen they are both sung with such power!

This song literally changed my life.I was so worried about being a failure in the worlds eyes. Not being smart enough, not having a good enough education, a good enough job,not being noticed, but 'everything goes away' he says, and it's so true. All these things in life we strive for like success, money, fame, none of it matters. In the end it all goes away and all that is left is love and the relationship with God. If that isn't there in your life then you go away too. 'you can have my empire of dirt' he says. Jonny Cash was so 'successful' and has influenced so many people and styles of music yet he says that he doesn't want it and if he could he would go back and do things differently. What is your empire of dirt? Don't let it fool you, because in the end it all goes away. Remember what will be left and that's all that matters.

This is one of the most tragically beautiful songs I have ever heard. As someone else put it ...'Reznor was born to write this song and Cash was born to sing it.' After hearing this song in my car I wept due to its power. Knowing about Cash's wife having passed away and everything just made me feel overwhelmed with emotion. It is truly amazing how someone else's words can truly speak how another is feeling.

See, the lyrics are more believable coming from a guy like Johnny Cash. This guy has been throug the mill - the song as sung by Johnny Cash sounds like it's coming from a guy who's been through a lot. As sung by Trent Reznor, it just sounds like some whiney drug-f***ed guy who wants to sell an album. I'm sure that's not the case, but it's just how it sounds. I dunno, Cash lends more credibility, more tangible grief to the track. And the video helps immensely.

Amazing, johnny cash delivers the song so well. The lyrics are touching and very relevent. Johnny cash's cover makes NIN,s song good. I'm not a fan of NIN or Johnny cash but this song makes most other songs in the world weak, there are hardly any other deep songs that can compare to this. p.s i read what someone else was saying about people who like this song; i think it is no. 86 or something. and who ever wrote that thread is a complete c***. please go read it and you'll see what i mean.

For all you who bash on either NIN or Cash, you have to understand Cash probably wrote this song because he noticed that Trent's passion for self expression thru music was as powerful as Cash's passion. The song is amazing from both mouths, but what ever version you think sounds better is merely an opinion. Even tho Trent wrote the words, I think cash put jsut as much meaning into covering it.

Cash fixed a song that had great melody but a crappy harmony. It's like the song was asking to be chaged. His oldman's voice gave the song another meaning and somehow sounded less weird than nin.

I have seen/heard the NiN song/music video of this song probably a hundred or so times. This song, sung by NiN is great, but sung by Cash as an old man during the time his wife was dying this song is one of the best ever. I'm not a country fan, but this song with Cash is amazing. The Jesus footage was a little wierd and seemed sort of out of place, but it's an awesome music video as well.

there never was, and never will be another Johnny Cash, like Elivs from the Sun Days in Memphis. Cash and Elvis are the only 2 in both country and rock halls of fame, and you can see why. Hurt a 9 inch nail song, now has became a Cash song, he made it his. all of his American Recordings have been excellent, but so was his recordings of the 80s that so many missed, i dont know if he ever did a bad recording. he will be sadly missed, and the love of him and June Carter was story book, voted the 4th most important song in country music, Ring of Fire, was written by June, about her love for Cash before they were married. What a tribute to 2 great artists, to think the song is the 4th and it is about Johnny Cash. the video, to it Hurt, was almost prophetic, and is the most realest video that has ever been made. daring and brave, Cash shows is weakening humanity, with June Looking on. 'you can have my empire of dirt.' It didnt mean anything, anymore, and this video should garnish such attention for its realness. 'i will Make You Hurt' and we do.

For those of you who claim Johnny Cash's version of the video 'hurt' is better...you really haven't seen NIN version of it. It is Reznor singing infront of a large white curtain with some crazy images behind him. It is probably the most powerful video I have ever seen. No screaming here whatsoever. Sure Johnny was dying and that makes it epic, but seriously watch the NIN video before you comment. Seeing Reznor cry during the video just shows you how deep and personal the song really is to him. I'm thinking those of you who are saying Cash did a better job weren't alive when NIN were peaking. Watch the video than post again...it will deffinatly change your opinion. I think JC's voice kind of drove it home and gave this song a rebirth of sorts...but I've listened to both numerous times and really JC's version can't compare with Reznors...I figure alot of the people claiming Cash did a better job are avid Cash fans. If I were a big fan it would be hard not to praise the man and his last song after his death. I am a fan of neither NIN or Cash...so my opinion is unbiased...listen to Reznor sing it a few more times...

Trent's version is definately better. although i do respect cash for redoing it and he did add some better guitar chords in the main melody but he took the best piano part. without it the song doesnt have any backround and it was a really good piano part. i also dont like the way he sings. no offense, but he cant hold a note because he was old. he also left the last big note at the end of song and he completely changed the meaning. his video is very good though, it went right with his meaning although that was not reznors meaning of the song he said he loved the video. I still like Cash's version and he got the song out to the public who never new the song before. also cash's voice was too loud. i much rather hear the instuments in balance with the singing than the singing over the instuments. nin's had more meaning as well especially because it has meaning with the rest of the story of downward spiral.

Listen to Cash's version and Reznor's; I imagine Cash as Reznor, 50 years later? The same words are suddenly flooded with new meaning, and you confirm that these are the same words. Yes. He has become an old man. 'everyone i know goes away' coming from cash's mouth has new meaning; you hear the voice of a person whose seen so many friends who've died, accidentally, suddenly, or for agonizing years, as he himself was dying. When he sings, 'the old familiar sting', you ask yourself if the man has shot himself up; except now it is no longer young and romantic, but old and tragic, and when he then asks, 'what have i become?', you're startled because he sounds like a frightened boy in the body of an old man; asking his mother, asking god, asking the universe; what have i become? This isn't a 'cool' question. It can't just be called 'interesting'. HE'S ASKING. Unless you ask yourself you won't understand. ANd perhaps We cannot at our age understand. And many may never no matter how long they live. His voice carries a heavy burden upon it. You hear this. he sings with each year, each love, and each devastating loss that left hims asking god and the sky, 'why'?

Im sorry to say this, and i know that this will go against some of your views, but how can you say that Jonny Cash did a better job than Trent in performing this? have you ever sat in a crowded Nine Inch Nails concert and have Reznor belt this track out to thousands of people? its musical perfection on a grand scale, afterall it was Trent who wrote this and without him you would never have got to hear it, its not just about Cash's struggle and the potency of his words, he is a legend yes, but he also had to nod at Reznors musical genius. I acknowledge how inspirational Cash is to alot of people, young and old, but it was the mind of Reznor that came up with this masterpiece. If you all praise Cash as much as you say you do, then you should recognise that he has already bowed to Trent.

Cash nailed this song much more than NIN did! i listen to it all the time and ive actually lost count of how many times i have broken down during this song. The suffering that you can hear in his voice, just...blows you away. and the video just tops it off. i cant see how anyone could not like this song, or not relate to it or how anyone can see the video and not think of anyone close to them thats died, or is suffering. i have so much admiration for johnny cash. he has moved me so much and god bless his soul. ill forever keep him alive, and so will his fans, through his music..

i sit here reading all these reviews and find myself wanting to put in my own thoughts on this incredible piece. it is poignant, moving, and it is so real, allowing the watcher to connect with the pain and regret, the loss and the desire to start again. but i must say this: though it is true in that it is real and beautiful, it is not all. the hurt is not the end. there can be reconciliation and joy again. i wish there were videos with the depth and truth of this piece that expressed hope. that said, this is still one of my all time favorite pieces. it is a true work of art.

I don't like rating songs on a scale, i feel certain songs have a vertain place in different people's hearts, and the songs you enjoy reflect the mood in which a you're in. To give a song sung in this way 3 out of 10 left me dmfounded. Are you going against the grain or do you really not like tihs song that much. Myself, I could listen to it all the time but maybe that's just me.

I listened to my dad's Johnny Cash records as a child, 'Boy Named Sue' used to make me chuckle. In my adolesence I got into NIN and 'Hurt' was a significant track for me at the time. I didn't know Johnny had covered this song, so on the day I found out he had passed away my friend put on this 'Covers' CD to see if I could guess the song before the lyrics kicked in... Track 2...... I couldn't move, I couldn't speak, I couldn't even think. A couple of weeks later I managed to get hold of the video and I think if my TV had arms it would have given me a big hug and told me everything was going to be okay. Now, when i'm working all the hours in the day and getting stressed and feeling depressed and sometimes just feel like giving up, Johnny's 'Hurt' is the only cure.

It has been over two years, maybe even three, since I saw this video for the first time. Since then, I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it again. It haunts me to this day; the fragility and the inevitable end. After all Johnny did, this is the one work that comes to my mind when I hear his name. I've been a fan of NIN and Johnny Cash for many years, and I consider Trent's greatest contribution to be setting this one up for Johnny. Music is great, but this is the embodiment of the human experience.

For starters i like NIN and havnt listened to anyother Johnny Cash. When Trent wrote the song he nailed the lyrics, and he nailed the music (this is all my opionion and not fact, keep that in mind). He sung it quite well too, full of emotion. However, he lacked the age and life long experience Mr Cash had. Johnny might of been doing a cover, but he turned it into more than a cover when he related to the song. When he ment what he was saying, i forgot that it was a cover of my favorite band. When he was hurting write along with the words, emotionaly connecting to it, thats when he took an excellent song and made it even better. I love NIN, i dont know one thing about Johnny Cash, but i believe that this man was a legend just by listening to how well he nailed this song.

Never in my I life have cried because of a song. This one really made me cry. I got the NiN-version for years now and I liked it. I considered it one of the greatest songs written. The version of Johnny Cash is much bigger. Bigger then life maybe, so intense, it really hurts.

This song deserves a 10 out of 10. It is one of my top favorite songs. The video is poignant and brought tears to my eyes. This song came out around the time that my grandmother died and I would like to personally thank Johnny Cash for redoing this song in a style all his own and for helping me to cope with a loss. It was a privelege to have listening to the song and watch the video to it. Thank you Man in Black, thank you.

It's a good song but its not Johnny Cash...Its Nine Inch Nails. It's a similar thing to I think Sheryl Crow covering 'sweet child of mine', it just doesn't work. The best version of Hurt Hurt(quiet) off 'Further Down the Spiral.' And go check out Southside Doublewide by Sevendust and look at track 8. It's another version of Hurt! Performed by Sevendust and dedicated to Johnny Cash! Wow. Again yes Johnny Cash was good but it's a NIN song...Not Johnny's.. Not 'ours'. Hurt appears on 'The Downward Spiral' 1994...Cash 'The Man Comes Around' November 5th 2002. Thats 8 years between them. Last thing: None of those songs were 'ours', it's music, listen to it, enjoy it, just don't pervert it like that.

Johnny Cash is simply a legend. This song is fantastically sung, it sounds so real and personal. It's not a Nine Inch Nails song, Its Johnny's. Even if they did write it. He sings it so powerfully. ProperMusicFan i disagree with your comments. Hurt is an amazing song and The Rubin produced albums are among Johnny's best. I have over 30 Johnny Cash albums from the Unearthed box set to Songs of Our Soils and the Rubin produced albums are at the top of the ladder alongside San Quentin and Folsom Prison. Johnny Cas is a legend of biblical proportions and the Hurt video does him justice. Johnny Cash 1932 - 2003 Rest In Peace God Bless

I've never been a country fan but this isn't a country song... it's a johnny song. Now, I know he didn't write it NIN did. but he changed it to be his own and all of ours too. Thank you Johnny and you will live on forever in this song and all the rest.

I do not like NIN. This is an excellent song and video. I have always believed Johnnys life works never really reflected his talent, considering A Boy named Sue and Ring of Fire top the list, that is pretty weak. The depth of his voice really shines through in this performance. I think his voice sounds clean, deep and resonant. You could almost see his soul as he stares at you from the dinner table, very moving. I never quite understood the popularity of NIN or Marilyn Manson and the like. It seems that pushing the envelope attracts people of current generations but I think that NIN started a trend of music marketing that is controlling every musical genre, especially pop, rap and country, it is no longer about the music but more about who else likes it, is it cool, and what will others thinks of me. I suppose that has always been a part of music but we have definately reached an all time high. It is a shame however that new talent is not givin much of an opportunity like years ago. Music today is so controlled by the corporate money makers. How anyone could chose the whining of Reznor over Cash's performance I will never understand!

Hopefully, people will now also take time to explore some of Johnny Cash’s DEFINITIVE albums such as ‘Bitter Tears’, ‘Sings the Ballads of the True West’, ‘At Folsom Prison’, ‘At San Quentin’, etc – instead of the visually-affecting Reznor/Rubin influenced stuff they’ve accidentally caught on MTV. Unfortunately, I doubt that’ll happen cos they’ll eternally be the 'current-trend' types who wear ‘The Ramones’ t-shirts yet can’t actually name 3 albums by The Ramones...

The guy is just so damned sad! He sounds broken, he looks ill... but it's all so powerful. Has anyone here seen Queen's 'These Are The Days Of Our Lives' video? Regardless of whether or not Queen is to your tastes, it's a similar thing because you have this stricken artist essentially saying 'farewell'.

How can anyone even attempt to rate this masterpiece? In a time where we have gone for so long with so little. When modern 'music' consists of either some punk from the projects telling everybody how 'bad' he is, (Johnny could teach all of these corn-rowed clowns what bad really means), or some blown-dried bozo singing about some bar that he's never been in. Johhny Cash and Trent Resner give us something this real. My God, this song, and Johhny's perfomance of it, wells up from within like a volcano of pain, desire and regret. Only a man who lived as Johnny Cash did could ever breath so much life and death into 'Hurt'. Trent Resner has done us all a favor by releasing this work but Johnny is the one who made it immortal. Long after the tears have stopped flowing and the blood turns to dust this song will still be playing and Johnny will still be heard. Thank you Mr. Cash for giving us something real to hold on to.

I have been a fan of Johnny Cash all of my life and I cried long after the 'Hurt' video was over when I saw it for the first time. I have felt pain all of my life for various reasons and knew the story behind the Cash's love for each other. All of the feeling came out of me and hit me at once with this video and song. Truely amazing! I do believe that Trent Reznor wrote an amazing song and should get all of the credit for the song, but that performance was Cash. NIN version of the song although good, TO ME, didnt have the emotion and the extra behind the scenes 'phenomenon' that Cash's did. All too often the songwriters dont get the credit they deserve for songs such as this. In this instance, two musical masterpieces {Reznor's words and Cash's way of conveying his life and passion}were combined to create what is truely one of if not the 'Greatest Music Video's Ever.' Thank you Reznor and Cash. For this song alone, you will be remembered.

I just thought I would say that pretty much everybody knows Cash didn't write hurt, but after reading some reviews several seem to think that Cash is getting praised for writing it. He's not! The fact that Cash has worked with Rick Ruben has a lot to do with Cash doing Trent's song. However, in an exclusive interview Trent proclaimed that Cash made the song his own. He said and I quote 'Cash is truely more than a man, he is what we as artist strive to be. when he did HURT I saw the song in a way that changed me, a way that I never saw it before.' Cash is being praised for what he is and the song is a fitting one to life. I don't care if you hate country music or love it, Johnny Cash is more than country music. He has influenced all genre's and has done more in more than fifty year career than many artist combined. I love Nine and I love their version, but I love Cash and his as well. You can't look at music from a one deminsional perspective. You have to listen and actually hear the words. Don't look at it as country, rock, pop, soul, blues, classical, but look at it as a mark made. Look at it as beauty. Now I realize that not all music fits this, many artist and songs don't have anything to say. Hurt does! Cash is and always will be a legend.

He was just Johnny Cash 'The Man In Black'. and you liked him because even though he was famous he let you know we all have problems in life. High's and low's it's how you deal with them that matter's. Though he has been around..Hell his career spanned longer than i've been alive. I remember hearing A Boy named Sue for the first time at my uncles when I was about 16. It felt like I was right there with him in a bar somewhere and he decided to horse around on the gutiar and belt out a tune if you know what I mean. Johnny had that way about him anyone who was a fan know's what I mean. I knew he had a new song out but I hadn't heard it. I watched his Biography on A&E one night and about an hour after it was over I was flicking through channels and that's when they announced Johnny Cash had died. It was as though I had lost a good friend even though I never saw the man live in concert let along met him. I just remember how the whole time during the announcement and brief look at his life and career I just still couldn't get it to set in what I just heard. A few minutes later they played the video for HURT. By time it was half over I was crying like a baby. And even though it was a song NIN did great Johnny made it his. As you watched the video and listened to the word's it was as if every single word spoken was part of his story and it seemed by the expressions on his face and the tone in his voice he knew his story was coming to the end and a Pretty Damn Good One It Was. What a moving song - sung by a great musician. Having been a (UK) fan since his earliest days ('Ballad of a Teenage Queen', etc.)and seen him pass through so many phases of life, this song (and the video) helped him express some of those emotions that you know were buried deep within in himself (which he was able to express once June had helped him find himself again). A great man, who had a great wife (and many friends - including the other Highwaymen).

This somg shows a summary of cashs life in a awsome way, and it is depressing, but also makes you think, hes had a awsome life, with all the good and bad things hes been through, His brothers death, his drug addictions, the troubles with Vivian, but in the end, he left on a good note, but to others who thought this was a cry of pity and wanting money, why would he even care about that?, Hes already extremly wealthy and famous, and this was a farwell to everyone

I don't normally write reviews, but I have stumbled onto this page and couldn't pass the opportunity. Johnny Cash has taken NIN's song and expressed it in such a way that he owns it entirely. I admit being a lifelong Cash fan. I had the privilege of meeting Johnny Cash on a couple of occassions 10 or so years ago (he was a regular visitor to my hometown where he had close friends). In his own words, 'I used to be a bad man', but it was long a time ago and he had clearly moved on after paying the price. For those expressing very negative views of Cash's 'terrible' life, you might like to know that the demons in his life (his amphetamine addiction, breakup of his first marriage and subsequent estrangement from his daughter Roseanne for some years) occured many years ago (try 40....). He has redeemed himself many times over and has long been a champion for those unable to advocate for themselves. This group includes the aged, the homeless, the poor, those in prison, the addicts and the alcoholics. He campaigned agained unjust war and unnecessary death. While his songs have long moved me, HURT reduced me to tears. For those who appreciate Cash's rendition of this song, you don't have to go back to the passionate (although often melancholy) songs of his youth. Try his version of Leonard Cohen's 'Bird in a Cage' or 'Rusty Cage' to find a similar feeling of a man frustrated by not having a enough time to do more, while preparing himself for the inevitability of death by examining the way he has lived his life.

I am a Nine Inch Nailer and here is what I thought about the song personally. It was the most emotional song I heard in a long time because the way he sang it you knew what he was singing was real. Trent Reznor wrote the song to express what everybody goes through in life I am going through this period myself battling with my own demons at the moment and any artist could have gone up and sung this song and not felt anything for it because he/she had not gone throught it. I am really glad that it was Johnny because he has, not being a fan of his though I could see why he was called a legend because he lived through bad times. In the video cash does seem to look old and tired with clips of his passed younger days i guess it reminds us that nothing lasts forever but it doesn't mean that they would be forgotten. This song will mean so much to people of all generations even if it was played a million years in the future and no doubt they will feel the same things we feel now. A great song from a great Artist Trent Rezner sung by the legend Johnny Cash good bye and God Bless.

I'd certaianly heard a lot about him, but this genre of country didn't really fit my taste. I'd heard the NIN version, it was ok. I saw the JC video on TV and instantly loved it. How could this guy have captured so much beauty, sadness and pure emotion in one 3 and a half minute song. It definatly makes me think more about the passion that can be put into music.

I don't think I've ever seen anything as honest as this clip. This is a sworn to God statment from a man looking back on the fight, the restlessness, the anger, the isolation, the love, and the sin that he's ridden to the end of his life. The depth of the loss and regret he finds there is brutal to share. I see my own father's falling apart in this video and I cry when I watch it. Trent Reznor was meant to write this song so Johnny Cash could sing it.

Country and Western is as bad as music gets to my taste and ears but Cash's version of Hurt blows away Reznor's original and live version (better in my view) - and I think they're both great! Great artists rise above their genre, I suppose. The video? Best... ever... Only one other music video has ever moved me (Pearl Jam's Jeremy) and that pales into insignificance compared to Cash's Hurt masterpiece. A man baring his soul, indeed.

I fail to see how somebody can criticise this song on the basis of 'how bad that person may have been in life'. Death is the only thing that unites us all. It defines our humanity. Somehow mister Cash encapsulated his feelings at that point in 3 and a half minutes and shared it with us, I am truly blessed to hear that song. I am still sobbing like a baby.

I have been listening to music all my life but nothing has touched me like this song, ever. I cried the first three times I heard it and saw the incredible video. I was well aware of Reznor's version and thought that was excellent, but Cash' version takes the track to another level. I'm not sure it's important what the song was originally about, the lyrics can be applied to everyone's life in many different ways. To read a few comments on here would suggest that Cash was not a particularly nice person when he was alive, that is only relevant to him and his personal relationships. To the rest of us, the artist behind the art is unimportant. All that is important is the artistic expression and the meaning you give it yourself. This song is beautiful, electrifying, probably the best song & video I have ever heard. Respect is due to Reznor also, his original lyric remains untouched.

I am an educator who looked for a song that conveys a sense of life contrasted with death. Some Buddhist teachings (and Fight Club) state that it is through pain that you really learn how to live. and boy, this song is all about pain. I had a discussion with the missus today, she hates when people say 'Life goes on', she lost a relative and says that life simply does not go on. I disagree. even if the sun explodes life would still go on. Life always goes on, whether we like it or not. 'Hurt' is all about that, life is here, without pain, there is no life. there is pain, that is the only indicator I am alive.

My teacher in my English class had our whole class listen to this song. He's an emotional teacher who speaks at a lot of funerals. This song blew me out of the water. I'll never forget it. I don't know what Johnny Cash looks like and I don't know anything about his life. But this song struck me hard. i'll remember this song forever. This was the deepest song I've ever heard. It keeps me going. RIP Mr. Ca$h

Johnny Cash has allowed us to follow his life since he has been in the industry. He has sang about his rise and fall as he battled his addiction demons. He sang about his love of God and family. He sang to the sinners and the saved. As he sang this song I could hear his heart ache as has sings of his own inevitable death. Such a man he was, he sang to us until he died. His labored voice rather than being distracting, merely called into stark contrast the voice that was once so full of life.

If anyone ever says that johnny cash did a horrible thing by covering a nine inch nails song i will personally hunt them down and destroy every piece of life that you hold on to. NIN is truley a great band but could never compare to anything the man in black has done for music in my lifetime or for any time to come. I adore trent rezner for allowing this god of music to express the same feelings he has about life with him. Definitely a great cover by a genius song writer. Rest in peace because you are greatly missed

I knew the Reznor song quite well when I first heard this one. One of my professors, an amiable Irish eccentric who taught Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, was in the habit of playing music videos on the computer projection monitor, in the minutes while people were still filtering in, before class started. He had very electic tastes. Most days, about half the class would like what he played, and be listening, while the other half would find it not to their taste, and be talking amoungst themselves. The day he played this one, we were all dead silent. Riveted. No one said a word. The final bars died away, and we all sat looking at each other. Finally, someone said 'Wow.' We all just nodded. It was really all that needed to be said. Only some of us liked Nine Inch Nails. Probably none of us were at all into country music. I, for one, had never heard the man before. But the skill, and the real passion, that he lent to Reznor's words was undeniable, and unmistakable. Every once in a while, music is not just entertainment, it's art. Wow.

A little clarification for some out there. The video for Hurt came out a few weeks BEFORE June Carter Cash passed away. However, by the time of her death, the video was already getting hundreds of hours of airtime a week. Being a far greater Cash fan than a NIN fan, I obviously will have some bias. If you listen to some old Cash, you can see that same passion back then that you all have noticed in Hurt. And for all those NIN fan's, I am sure you know by now that Trent has declared this song is now Johnny's, not his anymore. On the day of his death, the NIN website was pure black as a tribute. It stayed that way for at least two days. Bono called the video 'quite possibly the best video ever made.' Pretty powerful for some 'old country guy.'

I love this song, Johnny Cash sings it so well. I disageree that he sounds awful, I think the pain in his voice makes this song very credible. Yeah, he was a drug abuser, and he lived a hard life, but that just makes the song all the more touching.Johnny Cash's voice bring to life the pain and the suffering this song describes. And yes, I do know who really wrote and first recorded this song. In fact, I come from the same town as Trent Reznor... What a talented song writter he is and what better of a voice to do a remake than Johhny Cash's. They seem to have made a great team:) Also, I've been listening to Johnny Cash since I can remember so it's nice to see this song cross over and touch the entire US and not just country fans:)

Another comment on #86... erm, I'm free to admit I haven't listened to many other Johnny Cash songs, but fortunately, that doesn't make any of our independant viewpoints less valid. Don't the words 'And you could have it all, my empire of dirt, I will let you down, I will make you hurt' seem quite ashamed of his lifestyle? I don't really think Johnny Cash is trying to hide the fact that he's led a terrible life, but he's confessing to his sweetest friend that if he could start again, he would keep himself from the same stuff... sounds like he was a bad guy, but he was redeemed and wanted to express how it was all loss compared to knowing Christ.... but that's just my opinion and I don't know Johnny Cash...

It's wonderful! And despide the fact that review #86 says what it says... I think #86 like most people tend to look at the negative things someone does or has done.... That's not our part to judge him for what he did with his own life.... we are here to talk about his wonderful songs... and I did like his voice in 'Hurt' (and of course not only), he's gasping for air, yes... that's the catch! It's unique... It's natural... It shows the reality of life! I loved it. 'Hurt' makes you realize what we are and how life goes on.... and on.... there's death after life...and life aftet dead..

ITS MUSIC for everyone to enjoy at anytime. You dont own a right to it just cause you think you've listened to it longer. When I heard this song it moved me. This is an instant classic in my mind. I dunno about all you dumb kids who watch TV 10 hours a day and know all about MTV whatsitnots and critical acclaim and whatnot. I didn't know who Johnny Cash was when he was alive, and when everyone was talking about a 'Man in Black' who died, I couldn't have known him from Will Smith. But I saw this video a couple nights ago and downloaded it pronto. I watched it over and over again and cried at the power of his voice, the significance of the lyrics to the images, the whole feel of it ... I am no softie and this was just so amazing that I couldn't control myself. Regardless of this song's past, or Cash's, this song and the artist behind the mic are f***ing undeniably awesome.

I'm 49 years old and loved it when I saw the music video (yeah,,they made music videos back then,LOL) of Johhny Cash and Bob Dylan performing 'Girl from the North Country Fair'. It was my first impression of Johnny's music. In that video,,Dylan seemed to not be grounded,,whereas Johnny seemed polished and a musical icon. But just think for a minute,,,soon,,even Dylan made be singing a cover song from a band so far unconnected to Dylans style of music,,and truly (like Johnny did) make it his own... Johnny's life began rough,,,it peaked with more pain than you can imagine,,,and he gave us his end in a beautiful heart felt song,, and video of true and pure understanding,,from his point of view...

Trent wrote his lyrics to express his pain some years ago. Johnny enhanced the lyrics with the images of himself (old!), his dead wife (dead weeks before) and his voice expressed the pain even further. We should be greatful that some songwriters and musicians can express themselves so powerfull through music. Cover or not, Trent and Johnny delivered their pain to us in a way that made us understand. Plugged, unplugged, recorded under water. Who cares. Watching the video makes us understand Mister Cash very well, and we also listed to Trent 10 years ago and thought 'Ouch'. We will all experience times of pain and even depression, and it almost never happens that celebrities shares it with us like this. The real important thing is that this should make us think and understand, reflect, not discuss irrelevant matters here!

I've never written a review in my life, but the comments some people have made about Johnny Cash made me absolutely sick and now I have to speak my mind. For those who love 'Trent' that's fine and dandy, I like him too, but ask yourself one question...did you even realize the meaning of this song until Johnny sang it? Betcha didn't. All you people that think country music is so terrible, where would rock and roll be without it? Open your minds for once. Just because he re did a song doesn't mean he's a poor artist. It means, he liked the song and saw the meaning behind it, it moved him, and he felt moved to sing it. It obviously reminded him of his life. What's wrong with that? Get over yourselves for two seconds and maybe you'll realize that there is more to the artist and the music than you think. Yeah, he didn't sound like he used to...THAT'S THE POINT! What do you expect he was 71 years old and did more music than Trent will ever do in his life. I've listened to Johnny Cash and all the others since I was a child, I grew up with a variety of music and I must say when Johnny did this song, it moved me. He was in love with his wife and when she died so did he. That's what it's about. The loss in his life. For those of you who have ever lost someone close to you, you should appreciate this song. I'm glad there weren't too many idiots that wrote bad reviews. What were YOU thinking? Even before this song, he was and is one of the best country music artists of all time. It's really sad you didn't grow up with good music. I'm glad to know that he did open the eyes of some people.

Hurt is by FAR NIN's most pignant song in my opinion, I'm an avid hater of covers unless they are performed well, but Johnny Cash did MORE than enough to validate this song. Although i have listened to and loved NIN a good deal longer than i have even known about Cash, his interpretation of the song told me so much more about it than NIN ever could. Hearing it for the first time, i felt like it was written for him, it seems like his song from the start. Johnny Cash is the new Nirvana, theres no doubt about that. Now he's dead, more people will listen to him than ever before but to slate him for his version of Hurt is just pure wrong. He did that song justice in so many ways i cant even begin to explain. As sad as the song is, I have only shed a tear listening to Cash's version. Hurt is a song that will never reach the recognition of Bohemian Rhapsody or Smells Like Teen Spirit, but to me its always been a superior song. Many music 'afficianados' talk about Teen Spirits or Rhapsodys whole feeling, but its not something accesible by the the people just beginning to learn about these bands, Hurt is accesible by all however. In my opinion, and I understand its not shared by everyone, but Hurt is the perfect song and who better than Johnny Cash to make it his swansong? A beautiful song sung by a beautiful artist.

You were watching the MTV video awards and heard all the artist who won dedicate their award to Johnny and you were like hey who is this cool guy. Most ofyou don't know sh** about Johnny Cash. I've been listening to Johnny Cash since i was a kid,he's a former wife abuser, cocaine using, alcholic, who has done some unthinkable sh** that yallw ould have no idea about. You notice how MTV never had sh** to do with Johnny Cash untill he was on his deathbed, thats the exact thing yall are doing...its sick. The 'hurt'song was good, but his voice sounded horrible, all the cocaine and boo's has taken a toll on him. He has to pause and breath for air every 2 seconds of the song, its almost depressing to see or hear johnny like that, I'm not the biggest NIN fan,but trent reznor is a genius, and did perfor his song just as good or if not better then Johnny. Lets not just be Johnny's nuts because he died, half u the only song you know is 'hurt' by johnny. Learn some other songs by Johnny ar about who he is or was. Then we'll talk..

And yes,the cover is better than the original, sometimes happens, and is not only because I like Cash more than NIN,is simply something else.If before it was deep, has gone deeper, and sure the meaning changes, because of his age, condition, faith and life. The essence stays the same, and that's what matters. One of the best experience I ever had, pure catharsis, absolutely perfect.

First of all, EraSer, I agree that Cash's version isn't necessarily better...after all it's a matter of taste, isn't it? But an attempt at career re-incarnation? Why so cynical? The guy is a legend, or haven't you heard? When it's all said and done, NIN will be fortunate to have had half the impact Cash has had. Nothing against NIN or the original version (I like it), just the truth. What could he have gained from it? He was 70 years old and in extremely poor health. What was he going to do, go on tour?

okay..first off.. I have to say, from trents perspective.. I'd be honered to have a legend cover a work that I created. Yes, Cash covered the emotion part, yes he did a good job with it. But why is it better?? because he cut out 200 of the 202 layers of music Trent put into it?? the synth is gone, the distortion, the voice alterations, and the 'crown of sh**'. That.. doesn't make it better unless your ears can't handle a little bit of volume, and that volume only comes in at the very last chord that Trent hits. No drugs in this song, just pure self loathing, which they certainly both covered. I just feel, we're fooling ourselves. He wanted everyone to say 'hey, I know that guy.. he isn't dead??' that way.. he can stay in our minds for alot longer. One foot in the grave, is a good time to renew your career?? I think not. A good time to make people remember you were a legend.. that's more like it.. and look at the reviews.. he did it. No offense meant to anyone that is a Cash fan. Just read the fine print.. and admire the irony about him putting this song out on video instead of 'personal jesus'. Which he also covered. Either way, good song, cool video, made me misty eyed, but too much of a plea for a career re-incarnation. Sad loss to the music world, but atleast the legends came back and replaced the new wave of whiny ritch boys in the music scene now. Eraser.. Over.. Out

Most music videos are simplistic eye candy--this is something entirely different. There is something about 'Hurt' that makes one realize how insufficient reason and words are to deal with spiritual matters. And let's not fool ourselves, it is the spiritual aspect of this video that compels us. And it's not the like the usual Christian fare, with it's vapid sentamentalism. As the psalmist sings in Psalm 42:7 'Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls. All Your breakers and Your waves have rolled over me.' Who is Cash singing to? In my mind there's no question. It is Jesus on the cross; deep calling to deep...

The same song conveyed through 'opposite' ends of the music spectrum have both resulted in a powerful deep song. Johnny has put nin back in the media which may cause others to check out and greatly enjoy trent's lyrics, but that shouldn't take anything away from johnny's presentation of hurt in a different context.

A haunting, heartbreaking video. I always just thought Johnny Cash 'talked' lyrics. I remember him and his wife singing ' We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout' I remember Johnny more or less 'talking' the lyrics to 'ring of fire' and that prison blues song. All this from my childhood. but the clarity of his voice, the way he sang 'hurt' the emotion he made you feel while watching this video was a lasting tribute to the man in black. Thank you trent. Thank you John

I appreciate the thoughtful reviews from those whose vistas have been bigger than sipping purple slurpees at 7-11 and talking about how cool their new tattoo is. Trent Reznor wouldn't give you the time of day but would gladly polish the boots of the man in black.

I was very surprised to find that Johnny did not write it. I am sure there is a story behind the birth of the song 'Hurt' that only Trent Rezner could tell. Whether you make it to 71 like Johnny or you turn to dirt tomorrow, the 10 goes to those who do something about what they are feeling in this video. 'How well I have learned that there is no fence to sit on between heaven and hell. There is a deep, wide gulf, a chasm, and in that chasm is no place for any man.' -Johnny Cash

I cried when I saw the video of Hurt, and I cried again when I heard Mr. Cash had died. Hurt reminded me of the frailty of America's quest for empire and how the US of A lets down its friends. 'You could have it all / My empire of dirt / I will let you down.' It is heart wrenching to think of this song of what America has become and what could have been : 'You could have it all '.

This version of 'Hurt' by Johnny Cash must be viewed, in, of and by itself. What I see in this video is Johnny Cash near the end of his life and my memories of him. I was fortunate to have met him, by accident, in 1976 at the 'Eastern States Exposition' in Mass. He and his wife were walking between buildings before his show. My mother made the decision to walk by them. I was 9 years old at the time, and my mother told me to say nothing. I stared at him as we were walking by and he stopped and looked at me with no expression. My mother made a request for a song and he just smiled at her. I don't recall what he said, but his stare has stayed with me. Hence, the video sums up his stare for me.

I am so glad that people are finding this song so powerfull. My freinds and myself have been listining to the Nine Inch Nail versions of this song for years. I first herd Johnny Cash's version on the radio and thought it was a joke, but loved it. I hope that this will open people up to the word of NIN, most of NIN music sounds evil or depresing, untill you really listen to the lyrics. Thank you Johnny Cash for opening more peoples eyes to something they may have never sceen.

This was one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Johnny Cash's voice made it all the more special and moving. I did not find it depressing at all but simply real and true. Trust the shallowness of MTV not to award this song in all the categories it was nominated for- it was the most deserving song of all time and I will remember it forever. Thank you Cash.

To this day, I cannot name a Johnny Cash hit other than Hurt. I do not enjoy country, at all. It's down there on my list with rap. However, I believe true music transcends the boundaries of 'genre', and is something simpler, more pure, and raw. This is where we find 'Hurt'. I have never in my life seen a more powerful or moving video, and I certianly never expected this from one of those country music icons who is just a name in the back of my 21 year old head. But there it is, and it is incredible, absolutely incredible. I see a lot of reviews touching on this video, and explaining sequences in biblical terms, and considering Mr. Cash's (baptist I assume?) religion, it may well be best translated as a man who built an empire, but at the end of his life realizes in the eyes of god, this is absolutely nothing. While this may be so, it is not what this video means to me, or my interpretation of it is. Rather, he's lamenting, as Trent Reznor did when he sang this song, because he feels he missed something in life. He married, had children, had a wildly successful career, lived the American dream.. but that is not all there is in mens hearts. Is it not believable that maybe perhaps Mr. Cash is simply singing of his true life behind the stage, and the feelings of loneliness and regret that most men bare? Perhaps his empire of dirt is not dirt in the eyes of God, but in his own eyes. Perhaps, he is just an old man who simply wanted more from life, something he did not understand. Perhaps he felt at this point in life one should understand themselves better, and the mystery of life remained a mystery even at his age and frailty. Perhaps this is just a song that speaks to him in ways that cannot be conveyed, and must be read in between the lines of notes and lyrics. It's art.

Just for the record to all those country and Johnny Cash fans out there...the song Hurt was written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and released on his 1994 album, The Downward Spiral. Indeed Johnny's cover of the song is great especially with the video produced by Mark Romanek (who also produced a couple of NIN videos) but to give credit where its due, Trent Reznor wrote the song and not Mr.Cash

This video brought a tear to my eye, and there arent many things that can do that. More than anything however, i love the deeper meaning of life that it conveys, and thats not something i hear in songs too often these days. I dont think a song/video could give as sorrowful of a depiction of someones life as well as 'Hurt' does with Johnny Cash. Props to Trent Reznor for writing such a great song.

I didn't know too much about Johnny Cash before this song. I'm from Oklahoma, so you'd think I would....especially from the country cracks made earlier from city 'folk'. I wasn't sure how to take it at first, but after I had a chance to really listen to the lyrics, I have to hand it to him...he mastered that song. I think the message is clear...at the end of your life, it doesn't matter what you have aquired if you have lost yourself. When you die you can't take it with you. I admire his reference to Christ in the piece. It shows his acknowledgment for quality of life, not quantity.

Like many people here in the UK, I sneer at Country music. It's for inbred hillbillies with beards, tattos, crooked teeth and IQ's of 20 (and the men are not much better). However this song is without doubt the most intensely musical experience I have ever been priveleged to listed to. Cash's simple pared down guitar, with the plodding piano, just blow me away. The accompanying video is dignified but defiant. You will never hear a more poignant song in your life

Johnny Cash does not love Country music. Johnny Cash does not love Western music. Johnny Cash does not love Rock, Alternative, Pop, or the 80’s. Johnny Cash is much more than that: Johnny Cash loves music. This is evident in the song “Hurt.” He reached far from his standard mean, and brought a great song and its message to an audience that would have never heard it before. He has done a great deal of covers, but none so far away from what most people consider his “roots”. I wouldn’t say that it is as good as the original, but I wouldn’t say apples are as good as oranges either. That can’t really be compared. I can say to people that might be An Annoyed person with this song that even though this song betrays your teenage angst to pi** off your parents that you are so used to, there is more to it than that. You’ll understand when you grow up.

I have never really been a particular fan of Johnny Cash. Then my girlfriend comes along and tells me about this song he covered from NIN and how she listened to it all night after she had heard it for the first time. So we go online to find a version of the song. I was blown away. I had know the NIN version, but never heard the utter hopelessness and desparation in the words. I guess it is just a different thing to hear an old man who really had it all look at his life and realize that everything that meant something to him is gone and he is left broken, with nothing. His breaking voice just adds to the efeect of the words. There is no cosmetics in this video, neither on his face, his voice, or on his soul. I remember how Bob Dylan once said that he wrote 'All along the watch tower' for Jimi Hendrix without knowing it until he heard him sing it. Well, I guess Trent Reznor did the same for Cash with this song.

I can't believe it, what has the world come to? If Johnny Cash isn't dead yet then he should die soon. His cover of Trent Reznor's Hurt is so terrible I vomited. The reviews I've been reading have me come to this conclusion: You people are just brainwashed JC fans, or country music fans, and every lame cover he comes out with is going to be the better than the original because it's JC. That is fine you people have your opinions, though very stinky, but JC's cover of Hurt will never ever be better than Trent's erie song of pain. This upsets me greatly. When is the next JC convention? I might pay a visit.

This seems to be a case of the reviewers' comments being more favourable than their markings (unless 10 of course). I've never been a big fan of country or Johnny Cash although he has done one or two things I quite liked. Then I saw this video on TOTP2 two or three months back and was absolutely spellbound. So much so I've been thinking about it ever since. Its unbelievable that this is a cover, all right the original may be as good but it could not be better. The many comments have summed up the magic that is encapsulted in the video. Plus how poignant that Cash's wife appears in the background - she died only recently. This is definitely one of those few occasions where a song/video transcends its own field, going much deeper into life and all its strange values/emotions. Yes it's a classic and the age of the performer has no bearing on its rating.

The one and only time I heard this song and saw the video, I was walking from one room to another. The images and music caught my attention and I stopped. I hadn't been this taken by anything on TV in a long while. By the end I found that my mouth was open and tears were streaming down my face. Cooincidently, they broke to a commercial after the song but not before leaving the screen black for a good number of seconds. I was just standing there staring at the TV after the song ended until the commercial popped on. I felt like I'd been in another world for those few minutes that the song was on. The words of the song are delivered in such a moving way, the constant piano chord being struck is entrancing. That's how powerful this song and video are.

Johnny Cash has a lot of emotions into the song, it's truly a great song! Although if you have ever seen or heard the NIN video of Hurt, it is also equally emotional as well. Although, I can't believe that Trent Reznor was the one that originally made it. I think that's great that two totally different artist can sing about the same song, but different issues. I would suggest that everyone who wants to hear the song, listen to both the Johnny Cash, and NIN version of it (definatly look at the videos!!).

This is Johnny's VERY best...and that is saying a LOT as far as I am concerned. It may be a cover, but he definitely makes it his own. He is coming from a place in his soul far deeper than Trent Reznor has found yet. Trent wrote a phenomenal song and it is AMAZING...but Johnny's take on it will rip the heart out of you. If all you see and hear is a man who is 71 years old singing an NIN song, then you are a blind and deaf. Look beyond that and listen closer...you will hear sheer brilliance. Let go of genre and let go of preconceived 'I HATE COUNTRY' notions because this version goes so far beyond that it is frightening. I have been a fan for many years...and I say this is the most amazing video I have ever seen and the most heart wrenching song I have ever listened to.

This rendition of HURT is nothing short of brilliant. Truth be told, it is ridiculous to even try to compare it with NIN's version because they come from two different places in the soul. Trent's version fits him like a glove but Johnny's is a LIFETIME of HURT. It is all-encompassing. I wish people would get off the COUNTRY vs. NIN thing because Johnny's version transcends country, pop, rock, EVERYTHING. It is like a benediction of sorts. Now that June is gone, it truly takes on an even more painful aspect.

Not because this version doesn't have emotion, it does, but in my opinion not on the same level as Trent. When I first learned that Cash was doing a cover of Hurt, I couldn't believe it. To me this song is about a heroin or cocain addiction. he describes about all the pain is put him through and how ashamed he was but when he found the lord it was like he was crucified and brought back as a totally different person.

This song has so much emotion and passion in it. I heard the NIN version of it when it came out but Johnny Cash brings this song to life.

I loved the song because it reminded me of my gramdpa and I saw this song when I sat down with my mom and I heard it and it was a sad song I felt I was next to my grandpa. Hearing this song made my heart feel better and I wish my grandpa was still here to hear this song because he always like country music and I didn't till I heard this song on tv.

Most famous musicians don't live to be as old as Johnny Cash, mainly due to their own fault. The few that are this old are still acting young and trying to recapture that fame. As a standup comic, and one who has the connection to go big-time, this video makes me want to do it less than before I saw the video. Why? Because the impact of your life is how you treat and help others. Johnny sees how superficial our careers really are unless we keep our Lord in focus.

The images of Christ being crucified in the end, is to symbolize the contrast between Cash and Christ, and also to show his entire life is meaningless without Christ. The wisdom portrayed in this video is cannot be put into words. It is something we must all face, mortality. 'Everyone I know goes away in the end.' Read the book of Ecclesiastes, and see the familure theme.

This is a stark and intimate reflection on a life of triumph and pain. Being a NIN fan, I was astonished at the intimacy of Cash's delivery - the simple conviction in his delivery of each word against the backdrop of an acoustic guitar. Interspersed with scenes of his past, the now elderly Cash reflects 'you are someone else, but I am still right here,' and reaches out to the young man he once was in a vain attempt to reconnect himself with his past. The wisdom of a man who understands this disconnection leaves a shattering impact on the viewer. His wife appears but is always just beyond his reach - emphasizing the isolation. This is dark poetry, infused with an honesty that gives it an impacting credibility. This is the real deal. It was a Trent Resnor creation, but Cash owns this one.

This song brings out the emotions of Jonny cash and s even if NIN made the song i think that JB put raw emotion into it that makes the song his and the video help shows the pain he's going through to

A painful song and well presented, 'Hurt' echoes the sentiments of Bob Dylan who wrote 'so many things, that we never will undo - I know you're sorry, I'm sorry too.' (Mississippi a Day too Long) We Boomers are beginning to see more behind than in front and our spiritual leaders guide our way.

The emotion and pain conveyed in this song are about the strongest I have felt. The pain of growing older, losing family, fame, only barely remembering your former greatness and the pain of regret for all things done or left undone come through in this song. Although not the interpretation NIN intended for this song, Cash has made another long-standing classic in his golden years. Perhaps the final shot from this great man--THE MAN IN BLACK.

The years are finally catching up to the man in black. I really like the video although it has some disturbing images of Christ being crucified in the end. It sounds completely different than the original NIN version which is not necessarily a bad thing. As usual Johnny does a good job, and his guitar and piano playing is right on.
