Jewel once had a deep poignancy, and what she has done now is cashed in on the hearts of millions who were inspired by her. I do not even really care that she dresses over provacatively, although it is a awful change from the once demure yet strong Jewel. Jewel, once a figure of empowerment, has become the anti-feminist. She is as bad, if not worse than, the likes of Brittany Spears or other such pop expelling idiots. Jewel used to be edgy, without being s****y. She swore, she challenged modern convention, she insulted audience members who were rude at sold out shows, she was a strong woman. What happened? She really did give in to the idea that it is impossible to 'be respected/and be a girl' (Sensitive).

Jewel's new album, 0304 is so different from her previous albums that she is not even the same artist anymore. The old Jewel used to be this very romantic, earthy girl with a beautiful voice and a very innocent and sincere quality to her lyrics. Most songs were very simple; a single accoustic guitar there just to accompany her voice. In 0304, Jewel's voice is drowned by a flood of electronic sounds. Nothing about that album is unique--any female singer could take Jewel's place in those songs. 0304 might be a good album or whatever, but it is of a completely different music genre. The sort of people that used to listen to her old relaxing hippie stuff are generally not the same people that buy pop music. I think Jewel is aware of the fact that she abandoned her old audience to reinvent herself as a pop artist. So in the song 'Intuition,' she is basically telling her old audiences, 'yeah, I know I sold out, but it was my choice.' Another reviewer commented that she is smart for cashing in. Maybe so, but how long will she last now that she is competing in the world of pop? At least with folk she had a following. She was a big fish in a small pond, and now she's jumping into an ocean.

dude down there (sellout) doesnt seems to catch the irony in the track, maybe you should listen to it again.
I think she's laughing at the industry and cashing in at the same time, now that's smart.

Well I dont like her new CD. And I'll tell you why.
It's not the way she dresses now...or the way she fondles herself in her video..(think of the firemen spraying water on her)...It's the fact that she has abolished all she believed. Jewel used to be intelligent..she wrote about things that mattered. I felt a connection with some of her earlier work because of her religious undertones. She seemed motivated and inspired to write about things that mattered.
Now, she seems to have forgotten the reason she became so famous in the first place. I feel, as a fan, left out..ignored..
On top of all that..I dont think anyone can deny the fact that she's sold out. Se admits it in her song 'intuition'..'Sell your self..just cash in..'
hmm okay..thats good advice. Lets all be mainstream and appeal to the masses. Goodbye Jewel.

The ones who've listened and fallen in love with Jewel are the ones who will still acknowledge and give her credit for her talent.
Jewel is all about intelligent lyrics, guitar-driven songs, soothing and melodious voice..and sending out messages.
From her first album to her latest, and til now, the talent is still there. The intelligent lyrics is still there. To us loyal fans, it never does matter about her new look; first and foremost, she is a talented singer, this sets her apart from all those too-much-pop-and-sex-appeal-and-pure-dumb-luck type of singers.
Her new album is more edgy, not many sappy love songs, (which can only mean she's much happier now) but those who've fallen in love with her soothing voice before, will no doubt fall in love with it all over again.
Jewel is a league of her own, I wish her the best.

First of all, there is no comparision Jewel is much more classy than Britney Spears on her worst day. And just because she changes from a pair of jeans to a thin strapped black dress with a little clevage showing, does not mean that she is a s***, none of us know about her personal life only she knows and it is her business. And as everyones mother has said once...if you have nothing nice to say just rate her song and don't write anything at all! The song is GREAT I really enjoyed the Fire apperatus (trucks and fire fighters) in the back ground of one part of the video!! You go girl and continue with what ever you feel is right in your life...there is at least one person in the world that will support you with what ever you do!! God Bless! Never Forget 9-11

I'm 14 and I love the song! It doesn't matter who hates the song, But who likes it. If you have a problem with that, to dang bad! I don't really have a comment for all those insensitive people who are swearing about how much they hate jewel. My only comment is that they can think whatever they want. My opinon however is that jewel is awesome. One of my favorite songs of all time is Hands! from her 1998 cd whichever one that was. It is so beautiful and honest and pure. there is nothing better. compair Hands to Christina and Li'l Kim's can't hold us down. It is really depressing how much music is all advertising women. jewel was really honest. now, i think she so much more into pop music now...which i dont really like. Intuition is a cool song and so is her stand but the old stuff, like Hands is much better. Jewel is really great, but she should go back to her old music. It was beautiful.

If anyone ever bothered to take a look around, they would realize that Jewel herself was on a talkshow recently and has stated that this song was a complete satire of what the industry requires of music artits (not a typo) today. She specifically stated that this song can't be taken seriously. She was having fun, making fun of today's videos. I must say that the scene of her getting hosed down by the firefighters was definately a Christina joke, after seeing her last video. But after all is said and done, it still sounds very good. I have always loved Jewel, first for her poetry, then her music, particularily the lyrics. She still holds true to being the honest artist she was and still is.

I'm not here to argue...only to say that you people who diss Jewel must really love her to take so much time out to write lengthy disses about her and her style...anyway, if you must know my opinion of the song, I personally think its excellent, and I haven't even listened to any of Jewel's other songz, though I think I will soon. Oh, and about her video? Well, I, honest to God, laughed at the parts some of you people call 's***ty'. Yes, I laughed, which isn't my style at all. Which means that its fairly obvious that this isn't her style. I think the people so far that have said her message is how the media is 'controling' us is right. If I were you people, I'd cut the fad and pop krap, or you all will just end up a group of clones. However, you're all people, too, and I respect your opinions that she's going 'pop', I just disagree, and I barely know a thing aboout her... Now, I must encourage you all to email me with your opinions of what I've said...but please, don't give me any hate mail...I don't make email accounts to have people swear at me...farewell

I don't think you're getting the message of the song. It's a perverted parody of brittany spears pop schlock. Listen to the lyrics for God's sake. She's making fun of the morons that buy into that crap ('They say Miss J's big butt is boss / Kate Moss can't find a job... You learn cool from magazines / You learn love from Charlie Sheen').
She made it pop-like to get the point across. Maybe the idiots that like pop music will actually buy her CD and learn a lesson. 'Sell your sin, just cash in...'
She hasn't sold out... she's got the idiot figured out and she's making fun of them. Might as well take their dollar, too while telling the intelligent ones out there she knows exactly what she's doing: making fools out of them.

Well, its not exactly the same sound, or that inspirational, but why the hell should it be. An artist doesnt have any responsibility to stagnate in the same style all their career. Also the video is making a blatant stab at the unreality of consumer culture marketing. Get off your yankwank high horses guys

Disappointment all around.
I have never been a big fan of Jewel, but I at least thought she was okay back when she did the very soulful, folkie croonings for which she became well-known and well-liked. Not my particular genre, but, hey, at least it was original, poetic, and very sincere sounding.
Then I saw the music video, and, after losing my lunch, I sent her to my pop-princess blacklist. You know that scene in 'Alien Resurrection' with all of the misshapen Ripley clones? It was a lot like that: some horrible, trainwreck melange of Britney, Christina, Avril, and all those other scantily clad look-and-soundalike 'artists' being crammed into the orifices of collective American society today. I can only guess as to why she would abandon the true-to-form aspect of yesteryear that made her great in favor of the five-dollar-blowjob-in-the-back-alley look harbored by so many female 'musicians' today (not lucrative any more, perhaps? Move on and deal, sweetie, you have your millions already...). For whatever reason, Jewel has undergone a tragic metamorphosis from unique, heartfelt poet-musician worthy of the accolades she received from my then-high-school compatriots to yet another dancer-posing-as-a-singer with the same assembly-line streetwalker looks and prefabricated, predictable, uninspired lyrics, hardly worth the propulsion needed to shoot them all into the sun to the fiery death they deserve.

Intuition s*cks so massively and it actually looks like this superficial little b*tch tried to use every little stupid Christine Aguilera trick in the book including dancing protesters to do the dancing h*mp on the sleazy hasbin. Oh yeah and real sensitve putting the fake Jewel add up using the homeless guy!? Sorry but there is nothing deep in any of this and in a day when people need to really sit up and decypher all the propaganda. What is Jewel's advice? The braindead Jewel tells them to 'Let go of your mind '
Obviously thats what she did.Well, what can we say Jewel has been skull f*ck*d by Mr Smith from the Matrix. When he is done with her she will be liquified and fed to Justin. :)

Some of you should listen to Jewels Serve the Ego remix, it's incredible house.
As for her change in style, I think it's what she needs. The american folk chiq thing was dying. The video is crafty, she takes shots at Mariah, Stefani, etc. Watch it carefully.

how can any of you say that she is making fun of pop culture, have you heard the rest of the album? Its all poppy bullsh**, so i guess she is poking fun at herself. It seems to me she has just gotten creatively lazy: have you seen the way each of her albums sound more radio-friendly, her lyrics less intresting, just to be able to fit this radio format? Being a music major, i know about music, and the later 2 albums have music on it I would have written and scraped because there wasnt enough fire to, and not to mention I wasnt using my talents to the best of my ability, as she is doing. She is already rich and famous, so put that guitar down, get in a studio, and start riding that fame for all its worth, right? THATS NOT WHAT MUSIC SHOULD BE ABOUT!!!

LISTEN TO THE LYRICS... sigh. If this song is pop, it's some of the cleverest pop out there right now. Obviously she's poking fun at the scene a little, and putting out a song that's really cool to listen to in the process. I catch something different every time. Everyone on this site needs to calm down and listen to it again. Maybe with an open mind this time.

It's amazing how seriously many people seem to take Jewel's change in style. But I guess Jewel's core fan base was always going to be anti-pop or at least hugely skeptical of the teen pop scene. It's a shame, because fans really have no right to keep artists from exploring other styles. Jewel's intimate debut album is still her best in my mind, but we should just relax and let her have some fun.
Sure, 'Intuition' is a commentary on pop culture, but it seems to be equal parts poking fun and embracing. And it's a good piece of pop music in itself. I am not a mainstream pop fan myself, with tastes running broadly along rock, metal, and techno, but at least I don't have an allergic gut reaction to pop either.

It is great that Jewel is showing the light side of herself. She has emerged from the cat litter crap music of her first two albums (don't forget the sappy literature book)to having a nice comeback with 'This Way' to just simply letting loose becoming a diva (Check out VH1 Diva Duets). The song is very catchy and since it's more pop-oriented, it won't run the risk of overexposure. Some may say that Jewel is becoming a full-blown sellout with her latest work, but it's a type of sell-out scheme that works for Jewel.

Don't like the 'bling bling' thing? Try listening to Meshuggah.

I admitt this way wasnt to big in sales. SO she rebounded a little change gets more sales. Proabaly an idea by her manager. As far as hands and jupiter to good songs who dissed those is crazy. I was first glued to the TV after watching the MTV, naturally being a guy. Initially I was disappointed that Jewel had lost her 'true' self and her guitar ;) as she is not reknown for singing pop songs.
Listening to the song more, I convince myself to believe that she is trying to satire all the sugar pop artists and songs. The lyrics are all there to indicate this.
Watching the MTV again (couldn't resist), I noticed the big display banner flashing the following '$$$, BLING BLING, BIG PIMPIN'. I find this funny each time I see it and it quite frankly summarise what the song intentions are :)

I mean, let's face it, Jewel needed a change. Badly. Not only did Spirit and This Way sell terrible, they WERE terrible. 'Hands'? 'Jupiter'? Awful. So like I said, she needed a change.
But this wasn't it. Not at ALL. This is wrong. This is all, all wrong. Not because she 'sold out,' not because of the sad fact that she can't dance, but flat out because the song is horrific. Madonna and Kylie Minogue might have been able to pull a song like this off, maybe. Jewel without a doubt cannot.

The song is actually not too bad, but the rest of the album is pure pop crap. Yes, we all get the satirical thing. But to be ironic or funny, satire needs to be juxtaposed against the “real”, heartfelt stuff. So the title song is satire, and the rest is just a “new direction”? Cant have your cake and eat it too. Has anyone seen her website? Where she is hawking Jewel koozies and key fobs? Or her campaign for Gillette to support the introduction of the new “Intuition” woman’s razor? Hmmm. Not very impressive or ironic.

I commend her for the song, and I think she looks great, if a little uncomfortable, I think the attention focused on this track says more about how little society has actualy evolved, than it does about Jewel.

I don't believe I understand this really. Here we have jewel, who has a unique style, which has every right to evolve. But with this, an extreme-pop song for britney, but with a message hinting pop is bad? What the hell? This new style is a complete oxymoron, not evolution or reasonable progression. It is simply trying to sell records to trendy people AND non-trendy people who both think she's speaking for them. An oxymoron, not a change of good qulity, for sure. I hope she does not become like the pop stars she is supposedly making fun of. 'Intuition' appears to be a terd, not meaningful change. But what the hell, I know something she would still be good for, but we're not going there...

there's nothing special about this song. I only like it because it's Jewel. I have enjoyed some of her new stuff, but it sounds way too poppy and dancey for my taste- there's a lot of annoying sound effects on the new album. She's changed a lot, and it's only natural for a musician like Jewel to take a few risks, otherwise how can she be called an artist? Having said that, though, i'm not entirely pleased with the new sexy/poppy image, and i much prefer the innocence of her from her first two albums. I sincerely hope she goes back to that. As for the video, does it really matter how good it is? She dosn't have to do anything. She just needs to stand there. Being Jewel.

I thought it was just a bunch of whining, espeically since most of it was really slow and mainly done with just her guitar. I'm not all that into sugarpop much, but I like feel-good music; and I think some people mistake anything with a bounce to it as 'sugarpop'. Come on, if it really WAS sugarpop, she'd be singing about her pre-teen days and how she wants to get with her boyfriend (though it elludes to love a bit). The lyrics aren't like that. They speak more about how how the modern life forces us to live the way we do. Madonna made American Life like that (which I think is her WORST song ever made), and it was hitting the top of song charts like crazy. Just because Jewel didn't sling around the word 'American' like mad doesn't make the song bad, just different.
I'm sorry, but I think it's an improvement from what she's done in the past. I don't think any of her songs will lead her into great songwriting glory, but I liked this song.

Im gonna repeat smth that Chris Rock had mentioned a while ago on an music awards ceremony 'What ever happened to those cool white guys?!!!'. Think about it,no more cool cazy rock music played by inspiring lunatics like Axl Rose, Def Leppard an so on. Im not even gonna touch the seventies. Jewel, didnt your last 3 recrods give you enough money to escape from homelesseness, and manage to live a wealthier life without having to be forced to 'wash your hair in restaurant toilets with hand-soap' as you had discussed in a interview describing your life before success? Or maybe she like Sting is dreaming herself of getting a Jaguar, thats what the commercial was saying 'what do rock-stars dream of' showing Sting laying on some sofa dreaming of being in a Jaguar. As he doesnt have the luxury to go ahead and buy one like its peanuts. Jewel, your foolish games might get you some money, but no respect. Or listen to Tom Petty's 'Last D.J' and try to understand how he still does it.

I am in hell. Jewel's video for this song looks like everything else I am tortured with lately- J. Lo and Beonce Knowles or whatever- Wake up people! Women and men will eventually get tired of see half naked pop stars gyrating for the screen, getting soaked with water- it's all the same repetitive crap. Is there an MTV generation? I shudder to think- what's it going to take? Follow your intuition- reject this crap before we all have cancer and are drinking dirty water and eating our babies!

I totally think that this is Jewel's way to poke fun, and possibly jest at the people that she 'supposedly' has competition with. I find it to be satyrical and I think that it was meant to be what it is....a 'pop' song that has meaning...although it may be hidden in her breasts and dance moves. I love it.

I first saw Jewel in 1991 at a hole in the wall bar, her acoustic plugged into a time amp, she was incredible. She had so much emotion and soul. Then I watched with everyone as she became a star and shared those emotions with and bared her soul to us.
Last week I saw her perform on some VH1 thing and she looked SO uncomfortable in the stupid Brittany dress she had on and then I just saw 'that' video. I wanted so much to believe that this was some sort of sick joke, I still want to believe that. That she MUST be doing some satire on the whole pop, trendy satire thing - It HAS to be. Well, I downloaded the rest of the cd. I thought my ears were going to fall off. Jewel has somehow managed to take all her talent and roll it into one big ball of SUCK!!!

I heard this song for the first time in my car and changed the station right away, but then i heard it again a few more times throughout the week and eventually began to like it. I too was surprised it was Jewel i thought it would be someone like a spears or shakira or a new pop star. I think its good that Jewel changed up her musical genre a bit, i liked her old stuff and i like her new stuff as well, its what makes her well rounded musically. I might get the CD, i might not, im eager to see some more stuff out from her on the radio and TV from this album, if not i think it will just go down as a one hit album. I saw her on Conan O'brian on June 10th and i have to say she looks alot better than she did back in the day, she has a great voice too, and whatever song style she writes her voice sounds great.

This song is only a satire if her next songs return to her original image. To me, even if this is a satire, the video is a ridiculous attempt to cash in on the pop-diva scene. There are many ways to satirize pop-culture that would have been more appropriate (if she really is anti-pop), but what is seen on TV simply doesn't seem like this is the case.

For all those 'fans' who have decided not to be fans anymore, then good riddance since you were never true fans to begin with! Jewel has every right to try something different in order to make a statement against the music industry, and that takes guts. Yes, the song is contraversial, but that's the thing...it has caught your attention and that's what she wants. I have got the new CD and it has many great songs in there. My advice to anyone, get the 0304 CD. It is definitely worth it!

In response to review #103, I thought the same thing at first. I thought, there is no way that Jewel could stoop so low as to resport to cheap flaunting of the skin to make a buck. Yes, she may be making a statement, but I don't think she had to have as much fun as she did in that video. Her statement was not clear enough to me. I think she could have done a better job at making her point valid.

Honestly, I think it is really sad that Jewel has resorted to crap money making music. It is the same as everything else you hear today. I loved Jewel's old stuff. It was unique and had such passion and soul in it. But this new stuff, to me, is just 'cookie-cutter' crap punched out to make a few easy bucks. It is really sad. I really hope Jewel rediscovers herself and realizes that she does not need to flaunt her body and sound the same as everyone else to be a successful artist. I think she has lost a large, very divoted, respected crowd of listeners.

Jewel simply razzles and dazzles in this video. Intuition is a definite change and I think that is good for an artist to do. Doing the same type of music over and over can get a little boring. I understand that she is being satirical in this video and boy does the message come through LOUD AND CLEAR. For those dissing the song, you do not understand what she is saying about the fallacy of concentrating on looks in the media and music industry. Take a look at the words again...and let Jewel have her fun with this song. I have heard a couple of the songs from her new CD and this is way better compared to 'This Way' from last year. Even if the lyrics to the song are meant to make fun of our society and the stars that dominate it, the music makes me sick. The overly pop beat is just too much for me to stomach. Also, if Jewel's song is satirical, why is she dressing and acting differently when being interviewed and when she is in public? If this is also part of the joke, its just not working. Stop it. Jewel's old music is interesting, heart-felt, and intruiging. This new pop thing is not at all impressive.

Jewel was typecast as an earthy momma,
WoW she is more interesting, by trying soemthing new,

I have been a big Jewel fan for many years and all I have to say is WOW (she made me do the triple look when I saw the video)...this is a definite change for her and she has every right to express herself when it comes to music. I will be honest...When I first heard the song on radio, it sounded like Jewel had converted to the Britney/Christina pop culture and left her true roots of folk...However when I saw the video, I got the message..and let me tell you, it was a strong message she sent out to the music industry that musicians should NOT focus on looks in order to sell their CDs. It should be the music that sells. So for those out there who are slamming 'Intuition', take a look at the video again and you will definitely see the satire. Great Job Jewel...I hope you will be coming to Vancouver, BC (Canada) for a concert soon...If you are, then I will definitely buy tickets to the show.

The song is unique and has a sexy almost-Latin flavor. Interesting that the producer of this record is Cuban, I think Jewel picked him because she wanted something subtly skewed towards recognizing the increasing power of Latino culture in US society and Latinos' increasing power in the marketplace. However, the lyrics of this song are horrible -- it has got to be one of the worst set of lyrics I've seen. 'They say Miss J's big butt is boss/Kate Moss can't get a job'. Huuuh? Okay, the mention of 'Miss J' is obviously a nod to J-Lo, which is in turn a subtle way of acknowledging the increasing influence of Latin culture in US society. However, what's with the idiotic rhyming and mentions of J-Lo, Kate Moss, and Charlie Sheen in a song which is just a random string of unrelated references?
Another thing I don't understand is the cover photo on the CD jacket. I thought this album was where Jewel was supposed to break out into a much 'sexier' public image. But the cover picture looks like All-American bubble gum, and Jewel is dressed like a teeny-bopper circa 1973. How is that sexy?

Yep, it's totally different to earlier Jewel. At least we can all admit that.
But calling Jewel Kilcher, who as most of you know is a poet as well as a singer-songwriter, a sell out... what are you thinking? Is it a crime for a singer to change what styles of music they use in their songs and how they treat them in the studio?
Stuff like 'You Were Meant For Me' and 'Foolish Games' are not my favourite songs. Heck, Jewel isn't even my favourite singer. But respect what she does. Don't call her a sell out.
Jewel can take, and has taken, pop culture and still created music with a great message. All you can do is bag someone for using their talent.
... Are you jealous?

Ok. If jewel id indeed trying to make fun of pop culture, then I will give the song a high rating. This would make sense. In this case, she could be attempting to get the attention of the pop world listeners so she can make a statement to them. She wouldn't be able to do this by making more music like her old stuff because those people didn't listen to her old stuff. It seems she may be trying to catch the eye of simple-minded people and inspire them to be unique, hence changing the world. if this is her intention, then I will give the song a 10. But, who knows if this was her plan or if she was just trying to be part of the pop genre. I think Jewel herself needs to make this clear to her fans. Otherwise, she's gonna lose a lot of fans who liked her for the soul of 'pieces of you'. We should do something. We must get Jewel to explain herself!

Honestly, I almost cried when i first heard intuition. Jewel has been my favorite musician and I model my own music after her. We are similar in so many ways, from our looks to our lyrics to our voices. She was so close to my heart with 'pieces of you'. Even 'Spirit' had some good ones, though it seemed she was getting a little lazy with the lyrics. 'This way' broke my heart with the boring, poppy tunes and lyrics. I was almost a non fan at that point. But when I heard 'intuition'. It literally tore me apart. I felt so close to her with her first album. But she has utterly and entirely SOLD OUT! I don't care what her damn contract says! I am painfully heartbroken by her insult to herself, to me and to music altogether. She was such a sweet little hippie girl. So unique. So soulful. She touched your heart and that's what made her special. Now, she has given up all that made her beautiful and special. Now, we might as well call her a one hit wonder. For, she is no longer a musician! I'll give her a rating of 1 for old time's sake. And just in case she is attempting to mock pop culture in the song which could be the case. But it doesn't change the fact that the song is disgusting, boring and identical to a thousand songs released in the last year. I should write a spoof of foolish games. 'These foolish tunes are tearing me apart and your'e thoughtless words are breaking my heart. Your'e breaking my heart.'

I love her music cause you put on the cd and you cant stop listening. in the 3 minutes a song lasts she can change your mood. I fell in love with Jewel when I first hear 'Who Will Save Your Soul' and rushed out to buy the CD. 'Spirit' was just as good and her Christmas CD is great, 'This Way' was a mixed bag but still had some goodness but now she's sold out and turned herself into a cheap Brittany or Shakira wannabe. She's gone from a devout Christian and an 'Angel Standing By' who writes honest, sweet if a bit naive lyrics to a cheap media s*** cashing in on her sexuality and the whole 'white trash girl hip hop dance craze' to salvage her career after a weak selling album. After that video I wouldn't be surprised if she posed for Playboy or even Penthouse. She's now all for the cash, her 'in denial' fans claim she's doing it all just for fun but I never saw someone look so uncomfortible with themselves as she does with her new image in the video. Then she has the pretentiousness to add a hint of parody to the video and adding a line in the song about 'Sell yourself, just cash in' as if to ackowledge the fact it looks like she's selling out, she isn't really. (Yeah right... Please leave the parodies to the master - 'Weird Al', thank you) Give me a flipping break. She's no longer a Jewel but a cheap piece of costume paste. Seems all great artists eventually flip out. (George Lucas, Harrison Ford etc.) Goodnight Miss K.

It is amazing those who put down the lyrics as trite and pop-like, when actually , they are opposite. Which altho the music style is uncharacteristic of Jewel's previous work, they lyrics however are.

I personally like the song for face value. It's got an awesome beat and it's unique. The chorus, I mean who else could sing it like that. Christing would overdo it and britney can't sing period. Give the girl a break, she said she wanted to have fun and she's doing it. And if you guys are freaking out so much she has said that she's going to do an accoustic album next.

I agree that this song is not the norm for Jewel but lets be real... who has been sticking with their norm latley? Not many... Jewel was great with Peices of You and it is VERY diffrent from Intuition but did anyone stop to listen to it? There is a meaning in the song. 'You learn cool from magazines
You learn love from Charlie Sheen' HELLOOO she is makeing a statment here about how we belive everything we are fed by media. the whole video was so obviously a joke on how media rules us. Ugh if you are upset with the 'change' from Jewel... then i say you were never paying much attention at all.

You guys are using the term 'SOLD OUT' as if it were a bad thing. So what? If someone wants to change why should you have any say in the matter? Jewel or any other artist doesn't owe her fans a thing, as most people seem to think. I give artist my money, artist gives me music. Even Steven. Profits from my $$ are gone for the artist in nothing flat, while the music I get lasts (in most cases, for me) forever. The way I look at it we come out ahead. Too many singers worry way too much about what their fans will think. That's why I'd never survive in this industry. I'd do it my way no matter who didn't like it!

me again too. What really confuses me are all the hard core fans that decided to not be fans anymore? After one song you didn't like? I think a real Jewel fan would understand she likes to try different things and still be herself. On one hand she has to make money for her label on the other she has to remain true to her art. In my opinion she has pulled it off. People who like her folk style can listen to her, people who like the pop sound can enjoy her, heck even people that like to yodle will appreciate the sweet voice reverberating through the mountains. So why can't you cynic just sit back enjoy and have a laugh at the video, which is really funny, and yet Jewel still remains hot! Oh, and also quit comparing her to Britney or Christina, totally different music.

She actually describing the entertainment industry in her own unique way. Have you not read the lyrics? I never really like Jewel, I mean I liked some of her songs but on a whole they were really boring.. here i am again. jewel, although yes, she is incorporating satire into her video, has indeed sold out. she is not the same singer/songwriter as she previously was. she even said on an interview that 'she just thought it was time to change directions and move into a new genre.' by doing this she has SOLD OUT. yes, she has proved that she is a versatile and incredibly talented woman who can conquer any thing that she puts her mind to, but by moving into this new area of music she will have pushed aside her fans who have been loyal to her for nearly 10 years now. i do like this song. but its not for her. for christina it would be good. for britney it would be fine. but in my opinion, jewel showed just as much satire and wit in many of her other songs where it was just her, a guitar, and beautiful and clever lyrics.

i used to hold so much respect for jewel. i loved her because she was an amazing singer, songwriter, and poet. she wrote beautiful and meaningful songs that inspired me to pick up the guitar for myself and also write poems. however, this song, 'intuition' has greatly dissappointed me. it sounds just like any thing that cristina aguilera would sing. i liked jewel for her originality and refusal to conform to today's pop culture, but now it seems as if she has done just that. i don't want to judge her entire album by one song, but i can say that if the rest of her album is like this song is, it will be a sad day for me and for the music community because i will have lost my idol and the music community will have lost a wonderful musician who once was able to inspire and touch the hearts of many. i believe that she is going to alienate many of her hard core fans, who loved to hear her sing her little heart out folk-rock style.

Looking at it as a pop song, it's great. It's also a great song when you think of how she is making fun of what is mass marketed. I like a large range of music from small bands playing in small clubs to large pop groups like 'NSYNC. I follow my intuition by listening to what appeals to me, not just because someone else says it's cool or not. I think that is the message she is trying to convey, and she does a great job of hiding it in an upbeat song. I would be hard-pressed to think her whole album would be like this, I am pretty sure she'll mix it up.

For those giving this song horrible reviews, I don't think you get it. I looks to me like Jewel is not selling out to the Britney Spears set, but making fun of it. I have never heard the song on the radio, but I have seen the music video on MTV, and if the message in the lyrics is not enough, watch the video. She makes fun on advertising and pop videos while she's IN them. Jewel, in one scene, drinks a Sprite and strikes a really sexy, glamorous pose, then puts it down and turns back to her everyday attire. (But Jewel is so attractive she seems to me to outdo any Christina or Britney in the looks department.) Now, I haven't heard the album it's from, but I'm not so sure Jewel is changing her style...I think the song is an experiment in 'what if' and a parody rolled into one.

HAHA I really like reading peoples reviews on this song cuz you guys just don't get it. Jewel has written one of the best irony songs I've heard in a while. Its well-done pop, better than britney or xtina and I'm not sayin that from a 'blond pop chics are evil' point of view. She knows you guys are gonna write anti-pop reviews because it is pop, but shes just using it to prove her point that people are gonna like pop, and then people are gonna start hating it, and when she combines the two she messes up your brains so you can't figure out what angle she's at. Jewel youre my hero I'm so glad you drove the public into submission by using reverse-reverse-reverse (yes it is reverse x3 when you think about it, but American public can't figure it out anyway HAHA losers) psychology. ' Christina, Britney, & Madonna take a cue from Jewel and get out of your hip hop-R&B rut! Try folk or country or whatever. Rockers get into R&B! Switch gears for just one song. Sometimes change just for the sake of change is liberating. '
I agree with this poster that Musicians should change things up...but MADONNA HAS been doing Jewel-style music on her last three albums! Maybe not the RADIO singles, but the album cuts on 'Music' and 'American Life' are MORE Jewel and Lilith-fair like than they are dance-pop.
Incidently, Madonna's frequent producing partner from 1987-1998 was Patrick Leonard (on and off from 'Papa Don't Preach' through 'Frozen', which was also with Orbit.
Guess who has been producing Jewel of late?
I say SCREW fans who insist that musicians never hange. Jewel probably likes different styles of music, just like her fans. Finally, if you listen to the lyrics at ALL, the song is ALL ABOUT how stupid it is to follow fads...and here she is doing fad-ish style music. It is called IRONY, people.

Anyone who has to question whether or not this song/video is a parody or social critique are unimaginably stupid (or are blind and/or deaf). Clearly, if you have any question as to whether or not it was offered in earnest, you are far to foolish to ingest any point that might be made in the first place.
It IS satire. It IS a crappy song. That IS the point.
The more interesting question is whether this intentional schlock was put out in hopes that dim-witted pop fans would actually embrace this as quality music or it its apparent acceptance by the 12-18 female demographic has just been happy coincidence. Of course, it could all be by design.
This song is absolute 100% useless CRAP. That is what (intentionally) makes it halfway decent--and at least a little interesting.

What a breath of fresh air! It's so nice to see someone who isn't afraid to try something different. Stop using the term 'sold out', which is just a fan’s way saying, “Do what I want you to do, not what you want to do”. Too many of these folk rockers are concerned about image. Even if this was the only song on her new CD that was done in this style and the rest done in her usual way it would be important simply because she went against the grain. Christina, Britney, & Madonna take a cue from Jewel and get out of your hip hop-R&B rut! Try folk or country or whatever. Rockers get into R&B! Switch gears for just one song. This song is a reflection of pop-culture, and it tells people who follow pop-culture to follow their hearts instead. Since it is for the people who follow pop-culture, of cause it has to be pop so that these people will actually listen and get the message.

the song itself is very pop. but i guess that's what she's going for with this new album.
if i had to guess, i'd say - she's trying to poke fun at all those pop sl*ts who get attention by acting sl*tty, but at the same time, admitting there's some attraction to being that way. i mean what girl hasnt gone out looking hot (if a bit trashy...) & loved the looks she gets??! thats what i reckon

This is fabulous. The song really works with the whole internet blogging webcam universe. It's the theme to a shy webcam teen taking off her top. I love the 'postmodern fad' lyric..'what was good now is bad'. Her singing is extremely sensual as well. The hooks are there..and it sounds 'new'..Jewel has revived futurism apparently. I usually listen to 80's Britpop like the Pet Shop Boys and the only other girl singer I regularly listen to is Lisa Loeb, but I have a feeling this song won't appeal to Jewel's initial 90's fan base...I never want to hear foolish games again...but this can stay on the whole day.

OK, standard disclaimer here: This is more a comment on the other reviews than the song. As for the song itself, it's definitely a departure from early Jewel. It seems to me, though, to be part of an evolutionary track her albums have taken. I like the song a lot, have been humming it all day, but I can't see reading as much into it as some reviewers here.
Which brings me to the other reviews. I side with '!!!~$~*~RoCkErBaBe14~*~$~!!!,' 'redbutt' and the rest who like it. You others have the makings of professional critics. You appear to have the narrow vision and type-cast judgment necessary to keep artists in a single genre. Perhaps you should apply to your local newspaper for the resident film critic position. Remember, the criterion is no more than 10% positive reviews. I'm sure you'll all do fine.
For those who have more of an open mind, surf over to www.jewelk.com (the official site) and take a look at her comments about making the record and watch the 'Making of Intuition' video. Here's an oft repeated phrase from 'Making of:' 'It's way over the top.'
C'mon, guys, it's just a song. We should review political policy this closely. Let the girl have some fun -- she's not even 30 yet.

Looking at other successful artists careers, they don't always stick with the same style of music. Change with the times, expand your circle of listeners. Maybe this album will bring about more controversy, especially from loyal fans, saying that she has sold out to Pop music, but so what? I don't own any Jewel CD's but I might actually purchase this album. So Jewel - make money and add a little satire to your career, you're not the 'poor homeless' girl anymore. (And she's finally making a point of it.)

omigod! doesn't anyone get it. yes, she's trying to make lyrics so her die hard fans can go say, 'oh yea, it's anti-pop see' she's trying to play it safe while using the blatent imagery and music of pop. it's obvious that some a&r pressured her into it and she said, well, okay but i'll make a joke of it. but the fact of the matter is, this is real. she really did it to make money and get more attention and once you see her perform it live you can tell she's not really feeling it, you know? furthermore, i hear that the rest of the album is also very poppy so it's obvious that it's not just one pop style song. basically, her anti pop lyrics are her attempt to keep one foot in the door on the hip antiestablishment side while having another foot on the super pop accessible side. it just doesn't work though. and it's definately not true to her

At first i didn't get this song. I saw the very end of the video and thought, 'WTF?!, Jewel has sold out!' And, even though I've never really been a Jewel fan I had respect for her as an artist but she then immediatley lost that respect when I saw the very end of the video. Then I saw the video again, but from the beginning, last night and I got it, I understood it, and she had me rolling over laughing and instantly regained all of my respect, and then some.
She is not actually making a video like this because she feels it will get her on the charts but this video was made to make fun of society and how we put so much emphasis on looks, glamour, glitter, fashion, and fame.
Hence the over the top nature of the video: bling bling, dollar signs, being drenched with water in a white t-shirt, dancers moving in a provocative manner (but in an 'I am trying WAY to hard to do this way'), and all of the 'ads' that go through the video.
These images occompanied with the lyrics such as 'Miss J's big butt is boss (referring to Jennifer Lopez I am assuming). Kate Moss can't find a job. In a world of post modern fad. What was good now is bad.' Explains the entire meaning of the video. 'Sell your sin, just cash in' she says.
There are so many more references to our pop culture in the video, one of my favorites being the TRL like comment that goes across the screen, 'I think Jewel's music sounds way better now that she's dancing. SCCCREEEAAAMMMMM.' Now one, how can someone's music SOUND better because of the way they move their body? Two, I'm sure we've all seen TRL where people request a video and start screaming their heads off. When this happens a TRL like icon is placed in the right corner of the screen but says 'JRL' and in the upper left hand corner it shows the 'video' at number one.
I find this song and it's accompanying video to be brilliant and yes, at first glance it may appear that Jewel has finally given in to the pressures of society but if you take a second look she is actually laughing at the standards of our materialistic world.

I even was inspired to start playing guitar and creating my own songs. When I heard her new song 'Intuition' I was kinda worried she might be going off of her original track. I really dont think some of the other reviewers get what might be going on here. I think it is typical for listeners to judge then think. I also want to ask Jewel fans when was the last time they bought one of CD's...and for that matter why not. Jewels POINT HAS TOTALLY BEEN MISSED. When a person has as much to say as Jewel does you find new ways to get that message across. Ex. If a school teacher decided to keep the same statigies to teach the students of the 80's as used teach the students of the new millennium, that teacher would eventually loose an audiance. To the discouraging reviews, narrow minder reviewers out there: you are simply a product of what society has made you and the fact that you are trying to keep Jewel in the past says that that is a place where you dwel...('dont hate!')

Jewel..From Guitar playing and soul searching music to pop crap! You gotta give props to her trying a new 'edge' music. Hopefully, she'll make like 2 songs like this and take a new 'edge' to her music. I dont want her to end up like Britney, who had music like this then turned trashy!!! Overall, the song has a nice beat and is danceable and not like Britney's exotic dancing music.

Jewel in her artistic genius has created yet another masterpiece. WHY??? It is a SATIRE!!! For all the DUMB critics who missed that! She is ridiculing pop culture by presenting it in a satirical way. In other words, she is making a mockery of it. DUH!!! WAY TO GO JEWEL!

Normally I wouldn't give this type of pop song this high of a rating because it just isn't as good as some of the other 'pop' out there. But it's bordering on EuroDance, which is realllly cool for an American artist, should be pretty big in Europe. I give her an 8 for a cool beat, and a sweet voice. Finally she got away from the folk/rock bull and decided to sell herself and make some money. She's a little hottie in the video, I always knew she was!!!! And the music does sound better now that she's dancing!

Jewel sounds like Shakira. The song has a good sound to it, but with Jewel's sudden image switch, it's hard to give true appreciation to the song. The video is pretty lame. Jewel looks really akward dancing and being sexy. Really bizarre...but a few good musical points in the song.

This is a fantastic song and the clip is great too! Jewel has always commented socially and thats exactly what shes doing here! She is such an intelligent and brave woman, although i have one gripe, by dressing up and paradying those she's mocking she's becoming one of them and thus making millions of men grovel over her and not pay attention to the point she's trying to make in the first place....or maybe thats the plan, kind of like a yoko ono thing where you dont realise you've been had until it's too late....anyways great song, i love all of jewels work, i think you have to accept her stuff with an open mind and just embrace it!

I well say Jewel's new stuff is much different than her older. For true Jewel fan's, they'll come to like it. But if you're looking for that calm, earthy feeling. Intuition would not be the song you're looking for. At first the song isn't that great, but the more you listen it sticks. I like the lyrics...'follow you heart.'

I was never a big fan of Jewel. I appreciate her artistic talent, but her music style was just never my taste...that is, until Intuition. Yes, I was surprised to find out it was Jewel the first time I heard it, but never in my mind I thought it could possibly be Brit or Xstina because they could never produce anything as ingenious as this piece. The blend of piano in the 'pop' music is unconventional, and the mix of the innocence and sophistication in her voice is mesmerizing. A sell out, I think not, a sucessful experimentation from a creative artist, more like it!

Not as deep as the songs on Pieces of You, which lost her points from me, but definetly a better beat. Jewel is my hero, and shes not a britney wanna be.

What is interesting to note, is that the song is actually making light of the Britney's and the Teenie Bopper music which she is imitating. She even wrote a lyric in the song indicating that what you would think. Even her video is very campy, emphasing the not her, but the responses to her.
The song is far from a sellout, you really do learn about love from Charlie Sheen.

The song absolutely sucks....she tried a new thing a falied miserably. She saw the attention Christina Aguilera got when she transformed, so Jewel thought she would give a try. She completly sold out, and put out this TRL crap. And then in her video, she surrounds herself with actual dancers which makes her crappy ass dancing stand out tremendously.

When I first heard this track, I thought it was either BritBrit, Aguellera, Shakira, or one of those cookie-cutter manufactured pop performers. It's pretty obvious Jewel has become a slave to her record company and other leaches that draw their income from her. She has sold herself out. This song is ok for a pop/dance one, but Jewel has far too much talent to resort to this crap. Let her write, play guitar, and sing as the awesome folk singer she is. Then again, folk doesnt sell like pop. The video is a total sell-out as well. Miss Kilcher is skanked up to the nines, and in separate scenes her ample busom almost bursts out of a bustier, and in another she spins around to reveal the bottom of her butt cheek (of the butt she still has remaining.....are her 'people' starving her too???) I only give this a 4 because I like Jewel. I liked her better when she was jewel, and 15 lbs ago when she had a killer rack.

There is no doubt that this is a good song. There is no doubt that Jewel should be allowed to express herself as an artist and try different things. But what does bother me is the hypocritical nature of her lyrics. Smart lyrics...same ol' Jewel. But stupid packaging...pairing with a women's shaving commercial...looking very sugary in interviews, etc. Looks like she has catapulted into the commercial world which she previously tricked us into being skeptical of.
I give her a 4 for this one...because I am a huge fan and the lyrics are good. But the transformation and commercial spin are highly disappointing. I used to liken her to a Bob Dylan type. But can you imagine Bob producing a techno/dance album?

The piece moves me deeply and I commend her for having fun with her craft. Remember the firestorm and rejection that Bob Dylan received when he went electric? Hahah! Wow! Ok, here is MY take on the song and video. First, let me say that I have never been a fan of Jewel until NOW. It is not that I do not like her music. It is simply because she gets very limited radio play and I don't buy music. I am just not familiar with her. Second, this is an OBVIOUS slam on pop in general. A few of the reviews were dead on. The lyrics mention several stars and slam them as well. The video is meant to show how ridiculous pop and hiphop are. Third, Jewel does a FANTASTIC job at a pop song! I mean, if I was into pop at all, I would love the catch chorus and upbeat rhythm. Heck, I don't like pop and STILL like this song. So, basically, Jewel has a new fan. The fact that she is portrayed as a fire HOT sex symbol did not hurt at all. =) All I gots to say is, 'Jewel, you GO girl!'
If any of you did not understand this review, here it is in simple terms:
It was a joke! Jewel in no way sold out! She made a statement. It worked. Well for the ones of us that got it anyhow.

She is basically making fun of what pop music has become were you have to be half naked to get attention. She even says herself on VH1 and MTV. So Jewel will return to herself just let her have some fun.

about the message that you people obviously do not get.
your are plastic... everyone you listen to is plastic...
clone, prefab, mass produced, mass marketed, plastic
music by clone, prefab, mass produced, mass marketed, plastic people... and you do everything in the world
to be just like them.
she's telling you this... and your missing it.
finally someone who uses her fame to try and show the

Okay.....want my opinion? It might not be the classic Jewel that we were all used 2, but if every-1 ALWAYS stayed the same, you have 2 admit that it would be boring. I love this song cuz' it haz meaning......yea, it might be like something that britney or Christina would sing, but when it comes down 2 it, they aren't the ones singing it, so it IS different!!! I'm a singer myself, and while it is good 2 have ur own style, u have 2 be a diverse kind of person 2. All those ppl that rated this song low, it's only b/c u r stuck ^ ur own a** and 2 selfish 2 admit that the song is kewl......just cuz u don't think it's the perfect type of music, doesn't mean it sux!!! Pop? Yea, and if that is what she wanted 2 do, hell yeah and damn straight wit' it!!! It's her choice. Plus, just cuz 1 song is different DOESN'T mean it's the end of her career. Britney and Christina haven't came down yet, have they? NO!!! They went ^.......so, 4 all those ppl that don't like it.....get ur own life and stay out of hers. Cuz all ur acting like is jealous bi***es!!! Lata'.......:P

She's still that smart-but-catchy (the lyric is not Xtina's or Britney's dull) but I think she doesn't really belong to this kinda musical approach. Hope we can find the real Jewel in the rest of the upcoming album.

Another awesome female musician lost. What is happening to women in rock! Paula Cole, Jewel, and even Tori Amos, all of their most recent albums lack the fire and vision presented in their debut albums. Of all of them, though, Jewel is by far the most dissapointing. Though I'll give her credit for writing a catchy song, it is the diametrical opposite of the songs on her debut album 'Pieces of You'. Her lyrics lack depth, and her vocal range is limited by a few notes, not giving her voice any justice. Not to mention the fact that she's completely given up the guitar for electronic processed music. In an interview I read of her recently, she explains that 'Intuition' is NOT a parody. She explains that she wants to make her label money, that being a musician is job, and if she 'wanted to not make a living at this,' she 'could just move to Alaska and write songs in a cabin'. Jewel, please go back to Alaska and do just that! That's how you got to where you are in the first place. I think I speak for many when I say:
I'm so much more interested in the 'pieces of YOU' - not Britany Spears.

This song is amazing.. very tongue-in-cheek towards pop music today. She's right, these days it doesn't take more than flashing lights, dance moves and some 'bling' to get you noticed on MTV. (or anywhere else on TV for that matter) Good for Jewel. Great sense of humour. Can't wait to hear more. Even if you don't dig the tune, you have to respect what she has to say and in the video, the clever way she delivers that message.

I agree w/ previous reviewers when they said the old jewel on Peices of You was way better. Since then... yeah, she sold out. But hey, what makes you money, makes you money. Her other stuff, while better, was clearly not selling as well. Spirit was her big hit album, and it's obviously more produced than Peices of You or even This Way was, so she stuck with what would make her money. She's being smart, good for her. Hopefully she's still writing the good stuff for herself. Besides, the song isn't all that bad. Pop? yes, but it's chatchy and Jewel didn't stray from her theme of pointing out the errors in society.
I'll buy the CD, but probably won't love it as much as I did her first few.

Once I new it was her, I gave it a second shot. I have to admit it isn't what it seems on first glance, is it just me or is it a satire on pop culture? People always looking towards entertainment for what is 'cool'. I don't know but that is what I get after listening to the lyrics.
Only downfall is the horrible poppy beat, and repetitive chorus. Its like an anti-pop song disguised as a completely pop song??? confused really.

I used to be able as a woman and singer/songwriter be able to relate to Jewel as an artist. First off Spirit was the last decent album she has put together and that was only passable. She is not only pretentious, hypocritical and self glorifying but also a very bad poet, songwriter and guitarist. Jewel has nothing left to say...my intuition tells me this album is the end of her career.

I thought Jewel was a musical genuis after the CD, 'Pieces of You.' She wrote great lyrics and played great guitar. SInce then, she has been putting mediocre work back on the radio (i.e. 'Hands', then 'Standing Still'). Now she has hit rock bottom. This is a sugarpop song, not like the power-pop with real lyrics she usually has. Sounds like something Xstina would do.
