First off, I wonder how life is on her $11 million, 1200 acre, country estate in Wiltshire. Is she seriously trying to sell this garbage? Her point about consumerism is weak and offers up nothing thoughtful or insightful to the listener, unless of course the listener is a 6 yr old with a learning disability. I mean 'I’m drinkin’ a soy latte, I get a double shotie' or 'I drive my mini cooper and I’m feeling super-duper' this is just grade school crap and the 'Material Girl' charges $150 bucks to see her hypocritical hag-ass strut around and preach this toxic waste in concert. She completely insults her audience with this horse manure. Of course, she has always made money pandering to the lowest common denominator of society. On the other hand, if her comment on consumerism in America is that people will pay for this vomit, then she really is a genius. Let me try my hand at this...'I drive my big red Hummer, gas prices are a bummer.' Pay me. I am your Idol.

Madonna is a total waste of life. I can't wait until she's dead. She has gotten so ugly. All of her beliefs and views on life via the Kabbalah are wrong and moronic. She says that the only thing that matters is the state of our souls and how we treat others. What I say to that is f*** you w****. She trampled on people and abused them to get where she is and still did the same for many years after she was famous and now she says that bullsh**. She is seriously mentally ill she should be electricuted to death.

First of all, you must remember that after all this time of success, she's entitled to her flops, mistakes, and the like. I love Madonna, and am almost obsessed with her, but I have to say that I didn't really enjoy the music of her latest CD. The lyrics rock, but I really prefer 'Ray of Light' or 'Music' to 'American Life' when it comes to her recent hits. BUT if you don't like this CD, don't worry...Madonna's been known to change her style completely with each and every album! So maybe you'll like what comes next! Who knows :)

What is this chick on about now? I wish she would pick a religion and stick with it. She mentions herself almost 600 times on the CD, crows about commercialism, then runs off to do a blue jeans commercial, singing about Hollywood! Is she a schizo, a liar, or just a jerk? To Mr Wong. Inappropriate language will be pulled form the site. Just because one thinks Madonna is a moron doesn't make them racist!! If you're the typical Madonna fan, no wonder I can't stand her.

Cheers! I'm actually writing an essay about this song at the moment, so this is great practise! ;) Yes of course she changed her image constantly to keep us interested - that's the only way a pop star can survive for any length of time. And because she has chosen to create her works in the field of popular culture, they are always going to be viewed as creations of style over substance - that is the whole point of pop art and culture after all. But more often than not, throughout her career you will find that she is constantly frustrated because people will assume that she is incapable of making art of any depth and hence take her ironic statements seriously yet scoff when she tries to be honest and deep (such as now). Take for example her 'Sex' book. In it, she consciously tried to work in the mode of photographer Cindy Sherman as she was very interested in her art. She even underwrote an exhibition of her work. Yet critics could not believe that she could fully appreciate it as they didn't think she was capable of that level of integrity. As for her basing her early career on sexuality, yes indeed she did. But she did it in a manner that empowered women to take control of their own bodies without being seen merely as objects for male pleasure (and if you don't want to take my word for it, I can give you an incredibly extensive list of books and articles arguing this point). To me, that is indeed a higher ideal, even if Madonna denies that was her aim. I don't think she's disappointed with what she has achieved - in the interview at mtv.com she says she isn't ashamed of her past as it's what has brought her to where she is now - and if she was ready to throw in the towel, why even bother writing another album? The lyric 'I tried to stay ahead I tried to stay on top I tried to play the part But somehow I forgot Just what I did it for And why I wanted more' sums up the point of the song for me. She spent so much energy focussing on being the best and staying on top that she forgot about spiritual and emotional fulfillment. I think she's happy with what she has and where she's at, but she's realised how hollow it all is without love, without someone to share it all with. That's the message I get, anyway. (And I love the techno beat. It's nice and slow and raunchy. It gives you a chance to move a bit more sexily while you're dancing rather than just bopping away!)

Traviata, the brilliant wording of your first post left me speechless, and I was almost ready to concede...ALMOST, my Australian friend! Then you came back, and said 'She never tried to empower women through surface-fixation and trying blindly to achieve success by changing to suit your audience without a thought to higher ideals' What were the higher ideals of 1984-1992? She flaunted sexuality, and changed her image constantly....not to keep up with a higher ideal, but to keep us interested. She has admitted this, and now she sounds dissapointed that this may not carry into middle-age. So what to do? Throw in the towel and say it was all a mistake. And frankly, with a lazy techno beat to boot. FYI, Love your posts....

Sorry, one more (curse the lack of an edit option!!). I didn't finish the idea properly. That should be: She never tried to empower women through surface-fixation and trying blindly to achieve success by changing to suit your audience without a thought to higher ideals(which I think is the topic of the song)... etc. Thank you :)

Thanks for the compliment! :) 'She's not speaking to us on 'American Life', she speaking to herself. And she's telling us that everything she tried to empower women with is faulty and wrong.' I disagree. She never tried to empower women through surface-fixation, she tried to empower us by showing us that it is possible to be in complete control of your own body and sexuality whilst still being feminine. She appropriated the images of virgin/mother/w**** to show us we can be all these things and more and what's more, we can be them without needing male approval to justify it. And yes, I do think her controversial moves were anti-mainstream in that the mainstream (especially in the 80s) was normatively viewed as white heterosexual males - ie, her lowest fanbase. Not to mention that she alternatively pleases and pi**es off fans with each new incarnation. If all she was interested in was popularity, she would have assumed the 'Boy Toy' image genuinely rather than ironically and wouldn't have stressed how her sexuality was there primarily for her own pleasure, not that of anyone else. I think, rather than popularity, it's best to say that she's interested in achieving notoriety - ie, she doesn't necessarily crave approval. So long as people are talking about her she'll be happy, whether it's positive or negative. If you read any interviews with her (there's one at mtv.com that I highly recommend) it's clear that whilst this is an album of self-assessment, there is still a message in it for everyone: namely, that the 'American' dream (as an Australian, I think the dream is universal, but as American culture is so excessive as a whole, the analogy here is more powerful) of Fame and Fortune is ultimately shallow - and as one who has achieved that dream, she is in a position to know - and happiness is really to be found through love and spiritual satisfaction. I don't know. People have spent almost two decades criticising Madge for being superficial and obscuring her inner self, yet now when she tries to earnestly make a deep and personal statement, she gets viewed with universal cynicism and disbelief! Sheesh!

Traviata, you write beautifully. But do you really think her controversial career choices were efforts to not be mainstream? Her career was a product of the 80s, of her intelligent insights into a consumption culture that wanted 'shock' as their entertainment. She gave it to us, but in palatable amounts. Even 'Erotica', one of her bests, was made when grunge was sweeping the nation and she was on the verge of being archaic. She's not speaking to us on 'American Life', she speaking to herself. And she's telling us that everything she tried to empower women with is faulty and wrong.

And just to add, I just heard the Oakenfold remix and I really can't see how you can say it's a better version. I mean, if you're talking about her singing over endlessly repeated loops, here's your prime example! That relentless drum beat totally bulldozes through the subtle layering and variation of textures that is the heart and soul of the original. It totally removes the interplay of expectation and release that draws you in and gets you moving. My favourite bit in the whole song is when in the second statement of the chorus that mellow drum starts up four bars from the end and gradually builds to the entrance of the following verse. It just gets my hips bopping without me even realising - and it's totally removed from that bland, boring remix. Do you guys just not have ears?! Surely, even if you dislike the song you can hear that there is more variety and creativity in the original.

I think this song is incredibly catchy and the lyrics very meaningful. Over her career Madonna has gradually looked further and further inward and I think it's great that she is constantly provoking debate about morals and beliefs in the western world. As a representative of the stereotyped American dream (someone who comes from nothing and becomes a raging success) she is well placed to comment upon the pitfalls of this dream - in interviews she has professed her love for America and her gratitude for living in a country that has allowed her to get where she is but now she is seeing the hypocrisies and unrealistic expectations of the country she loves and is trying to express her feelings through her art. As for her 'desire' for money, she never had one. In 'Madonna in her own words' written in 1990, she says 'Do you really think I'm a material girl? I'm not. Take it - I don't need money I need love' and 'I always said I wanted to be famous...I never said I wanted to be rich.' I for one believe these comments. Over the years her art has consistently betrayed not a desire for popular success (if that was the case, why risk it with so many unpopular and controversial decisions?) but a desire for pushing boundaries, provoking debates (like what is happening right here) and questioning givens. She has always remained true to herself and her beliefs and has a need to share them with the world. The lyrics of this song and album are deeply personal and a genuine attempt to provoke thought. The filmclip successfully questioned American culture's celebration of the superficial (ie fashion and appearance) and its need to destroy. She isn't anti-Bush/pro-Saddam. She's looking beyond that picture to humanity as a whole and pointing out that no matter the issues, war is ALWAYS a terrible decision for humanity. I support her decision to pull the clip (out of respect for the families of soldiers) although I do think it is fantastic and think that many people (as usual) have not given her the credit she deserves for her artistic integrity. As for the rap, I say good on her for trying something new. It fits in quite neatly with the song and has received support from professionals such as Missy Eliot. I don't find it embarrassing at all. Fantastic song from a fantastic icon. I hope Madonna continues in the tradition of provocateur for many years to come.

I had to respond to Zodiac. Good insight on Madonna's intentions, but I don't think anybody's talking about her political views. They're talking about how she tried to raise eyebrows this time and didn't. The buzz on Madonna has nothing to do with politics, it's to see how she deals with the first irrelevant CD she has ever put out. Her take on 'American Life' is elitist and narrow-minded. She's boring.

Well, a whole legion of people are complaining about this song, so it seems Madonna's gotten you to do exactly what she wanted. Doesn't anybody understand? Madonna thrives on turning heads, raising eyebrows, and sparking controversy. For God's sake, I don't even like Madonna, and I still knew that. And in this metamorphosis of hers, she chooses to ignite debates from a political standpoint. The issue in question is that she objects to the fact that the U.S. government spends more or less than a billion dollars a week so they can bomb women and children. That's money that would be far better spent on education or something else worthwhile.

Not crazy about this song musically (the rap is pretty bad by my standards, although she makes her point), but the lyrics are refreshingly honest. Say what you will about Madonna, I respect her for this soul-searching journey she is on (OK, a mid-life crisis, but that's nothing to be ashamed of) and for speaking out against the skewed values and priorities of many Americans. I am American, and I love my country, but I am embarrassed by the message our music, movies, and unabashed celebrity worship sends to our children and the rest of the world. I don't believe that she is simply trying to capitalize on the anti-war sentiment, in fact most Americans seem very pro-war to me and in these times it is highly likely that controversial opinions will be censored in the name of patriotism and morale. I think she took a risk with this, in true Madonna fashion. I definitely intend to check out the album with an open mind.

What's it feel like for a girl? Actually, a girl of 44 who has transcended every claim that she was 'washed up' and 'finished'? It's time to make a single that allows her to age. One where she shows her vulnerability along with a softening jaw line. And 'Ameican Life' does this...with a thumping, off-kilter bass groove and a seething synthesizer that creates a simple, stripped dance-jam. But it's hard to shake your body when Our Lady sounds like she's doing something she promised she would never do...regret her past.

I just purchased the American Life Album, and I have to say it was a great compilation. If you don't like the American Life single, that's okay, you'll like the other songs. On some good songs, the only downside is it gets distorted by techo experimentation and the rap in the American Life single. Through the whole album though, it sounds a bit melancholy, especially X-Static Process. That's a really good song. I really enjoy this album, but I must say, I like Ray of Light much better, in which she worked with William Orbit. She should do another album with him. I am not a Madonna fan, but I really enjoy some of her music. Madonna is very controversial

It's a really cool song. It has an awesome beat and a neat melody. It is very modern. It shows Madonna is keeping up. People may say the song is stupid because of the lyrics, but they're powerful. This may sound strange, but it sounds like Madonna's singing about a person who is trying to fit in to society by doing everything she can. The rap is really weird, but kind of funny. You got to admire her for doing something knew, even if it makes herself look stupid. I don't particularly like Madonna herself, but some of her music is awesome. Madonna is a very universal in her music.

I'm a Madonna fan and remember when she first hit the scene. Her greatest skill is making memorable dance songs ('Holiday', 'Into The Groove', 'Vogue', 'Express Yourself', 'Music', et al). Via file sharing, I took a listen to tracks from 'American Life' and thought it was mostly awful. Madonna is not a rapper and her rhymes are abysmal. Disjointed techno beeps, boops and warbles without rhythm or melody is not music. And the person who wrote review #157 seriously needs to get a grip: 'Madonna is one of the most influential women in music and all of history.' Madonna is no Marie Curie, Indira Gandhi, Joan of Arc, or any number of other women I can think of who've had an impact upon history. Madonna's contribution to history is, 'Dance and sing, get up and do your thing. Dance and sing, get up and do your thing. Dance and sing, get up and do your thing.' I'm tired of her self-important babbling and preaching; she needs to get back to what she does best and that is making memorable dance songs that endure.

it's definitely not Madonna's best, but nevertheless, I have respect for her. She is not afraid to experiment (M. Carey and W. Houston, yawn yawn)and release a song doomed to be rejected by the US of A from the very beginning. The US charts bore me; it's always the same-- a song sitting in the pole position for weeks and weeks-- and what used to be a pop chart has become nothing more than an alternative r&b thing.

The problem is that Madonna is no longer pretty, or sexy. She just always used sex to sell herself, and now that her looks are gone she has to rely on talent of which she has very little of. Take another artist like Cyndi Lauper for instance. She has gotten old as well. She's five years older than Madonna, but Cyndi has an incredible voice. She's also a great songwriter. The other problem with Madonna is that she can't act. That's another thing that Cyndi Lauper is great at. Madonna just has to face the fact that her career is over. She should just become a producer, or something, because she just can't cut it anymore as an artist of any kind.

Personally, I think this song is between mediocore and good. It has a beat and melody that gets catchy. I think she could have done a better job though. She didn't put much effort in it. I think Ray of Light is her greatest album. The Rap is a joke. But for a rapper, she's not bad. I'm glad she changed the video. I read about it in the Statesman, and that was just wrong of her. Who does she think she is by making Bush look bad? She corrupted America with her actions. Madonna's a woman who made many mistakes that will always affect her and her children. I hate the artist's actions, but I really like some of her music. I just want everyone to know the real side of her.

I am in no way a Madonna fan.I have always found her trashy and extremely rude.I purchased the album 'American Life' to see what all the fuss was about, and it's actually a pretty good album considering it came from a w**** like her.But as I was reading these comments,I noticed that you people are bashing her fans.Just because they don't agree with you people's OPINION that she is over doesn't make them any less of a person.I was particularly puzzled over 'Old Enough To Know Better''s comment. If you are old enough to know better, than you of all people should know that Madonna has always brought herself back from her failures.I am a 35 year old woman and I have watched Madonna continually reinvent herself throughout the years and anytime she failed, she brushed herself off and came back in full force.Apparently,YOU are not old enough to remember how many times Madonna's career has been said to be over only to return to grace a few years later.I am amazed at the strength of her fans. Those who have stood by her through all the of the years, listening to people like all of you who have said that she is finished every time she mis-steps.Inside,they are quietly laughing to themselves, for they know that their idol will soon prove you people wrong once again.I give the album a 7...Madonna fans a 10,and if I could give them anything higher,I would because they are a truly strong bunch.GO MADONNA FANS!!!

It's well known that madonna likes to pull surpises. This is no different. Some people will like it some won't. I personally like it, though it took quite a few listens for it to grow on me. The rap wasn't particularly good, but quite funny. Her voice suits her songs and i think she works well within her vocal capabilities, singing in different voices to make up for her limited range. She ain't no Aguilera, but she can sound good, too.

Why would anyone have Madonna as an idol? Someone who just copies people constantly? You would think that she had won a Nobel Peace Prize or something the way people go on and on about her. We need to wake up, our priorities are f***ed. She would probably agree if it would sell a record.

American Life has been removed from radio playlists and radio airplay has gone to like 71 on the charts. The single itself isn't doing all that good either. Check Billboard out for the FACTS.

I kinda like the song, and the album is ok, but I prefer her last 2 albums. Melanie: you say Madonna fans are in denial? What are they in denial of, pre tell? That Madonna is old? That she is out-dated? That she is failing miserably at her attempts to capture the youth market of the music industry? That she can't sing? That she can't write lyrics? Well guess what? Your opinion is simply that. And even if your opinion happens to be one that is held by many others, and even if it is held by some sort of majority, it still does not make it factual. Everything is subjective. So leave the Madonna fans alone.

Please wake up and admit to Madonna's demise. This is beginning to get nauseating. I think a lot of you have blinders on your eyes. Ever hear the term 'wake up and smell the coffee?' Well that saying exists, and I recommend that the fan holdovers from way back when, admit that she is yesterday's news. 'American Life' can't even keep up with Cher, Fleetwood Mac, Nora Jones(who has been in the top 5 forever, and even Kelly Clarkson). Her promotional machine has run dry. She's very much over, in the U.S.

I think SpiderMonkey's review says it all. SpiderMonkey, and the rest of the filthy-mouthed punks that support her and her very tired message of America-bashing (can't she find something original to say?) will always support her and make her even richer. Doesn't the Rap portion just contain an autobiography? She will be a peace advocate as long as the peaceniks continue to pay big-bucks and support her multiple-continent lifestyle. It is so easy for someone with that kind of wealth to feel 'above it all'. Give me a break.

As I was reading the comments posted here,I realized just how big of idiots you people are.I agree with you about her voice, but the truth is, she never has had that much vocal talent and IT DIDN'T MATTER.Madonna's voice has never been an issue,so why are you morons bi***ing about it now?I recently read a review for 'American Life' where she was compared to Kelly Clarkson. That is really f***in stupid.Sure,Kelly may have more vocal range than Madonna but you wait and see...in five years,Kelly will be nothing more than another bubblegum pop has-been while Madonna will still be pushing her music to new limits.Sure,'American Life' may not be her best album, but she did put thoughts into her lyrics.Listen to them carefully.Madonna has reached a very understanding time in her life. You're not gonna find lyrics like that on Kelly or Christina's CD's.Madonna is arguably the greatest performer of our time, like it or not.She has been able to maintain her appeal by constant reinvention. This album may not be a huge sucess, but that's not gonna stop her from making another one.She has always brought herself back.To all you dumb f***s who are saying she is over, you're gonna be looking even dumber when she's still making music a decade from now.bi***.Satan.Beautiful.Tramp.Idol.Godess.Whether you lve her or hate her,Madonna is here to stay.

Everything she has ever done in her career(I use that very lightly), was based on publicity, we were subjected to, over and over again, until it was so nauseating. Now the world is realizing what a non-talent she really is. I listened to the A.L. CD, once thru--that was enough. Now it's going right into my junk CD collection. What in the hell happened. First of all the lyrics on this album are almost incoherent and make virtually no sense and it sounds like someone who just completed hooked on phonics wrote them. As for the music, well there isn't any. Someone could record themselves taking a pi** and it would sell better than this trash. And that rap, I won't even say anything. Anyways, I think Madonna should get the hell out, she's scaring people.

I'm finding it particularly amusing that so many people are interpreting Madonna's single 'American Life' as Madonna complaining about how rich and famous she is. Madonna is referring to how having all these luxuries (which she is happy to have!) are not the be-all and end-all of her happiness. Just like any other song from any other Madonna album, she sings about HER subjective experience of life. Ok, so it took her 20 yrs to realise this, but given my experience, she 'got it' a lot quicker than most people I know. We all take different paths to discovering meaning and purpose of who we are; this is Madonna's path (although I'm not too gung-ho on the whole Kabbalah thing myself, good for her for looking for some direction amidst the chaos with which this world presents us). We should all take a page from her book (ok, maybe not a page; I don't think I could stomach that much Kabbalah; a sentence or a paragraph will do).

Dear FreudianSlip, 1. 'Pseudo' means fake. Madonna is making an obvious point and dressing it up as something insightful. I think pseudo is justified. With regards to my comments, I refer you to Ljiphart, Oakeshott and Crick. 2. It is not hard to work out that Madonna is rich, but see the Times of London's annual rich list if you must know the details. She could give more to charity and still have an expansive lifestyle. I am sure she gives an amount to charity; however, she could give more. I don't think asking her to have a slightly cheaper house, car or dress is particularly much when people are dying of eminently preventable diseases across the world. 3. I said muppets, not puppets. I puppet is an articulated doll that can be moved around by strings, rods or levers. You are a muppet. 4. Look up the meaning of the word 'liberal', dumbf***. I am not starting a revolution because of Madonna's incessant drivelling, just telling people not to buy it or listen to it. 5. Yes, there is diversity in the world. Just because something is different does not mean that it is necessarily good or bad. However, in Madonna's case, it is a) different and b) buttock-clenchingly bad. Have a lousy day, Dave.

Some people seem to think this album is a huge, terrible mistake by Madonna and that it is going to destroy (if it hasn't already) her career). Let's say it is her worst album: does it really warrant such strong language? Honestly, such negativity poses some serious questions: Are you really that offended by a (good/bad) collection of music and lyrics? Can Madonna really provoke such emotions? Has Madonna, in fact, got you right where she wants you? Score: Madonna 1. Nay-sayers - 0.

Remember the ending in the 'Wizard of Oz,' where the 'Great and Powerful Oz' reveals himself? Well at least Toto reveals the man behind the machine. This in a way reminds me of of that. Madonna was never great or powerful. She just had great uh um, writers and producers backing her since the beginning, along with a little machine called promotion. And a lot of you bought it. Well, now it looks like the promotion machine is losing gas. Madonna must of gone solo this time around. Tell me i can wake up from this 20 year nightmare...Is it really finally over? Looks like it.

Madonna's fans are so queer. Just look at her artist's message board at vh1.com. I've never seen such desperate, insecure posts for any artist. I was laughing myself silly just reading through a few of them. Pretty sad. The song by the way sums up my feelings as well--plain sad.

I'll be selling this latest work from Madonna at my next rummage sale. I bet i don't even get 50 cents for it. I'm definitely no longer a fan, and will be paying a lot more attention to much more innovative performers - the extremely underrated Cyndi Lauper (her Shine EP is fantastic). I also think Tori Amos is another great talent.

The lyrics are so laughingly bad, you could swear that Madonna enlisted the help of her kid in writing the lions share of the single 'American Life,' as well as the majority of the CD. And please do not get me started on the rap portion of the song. I couldn't help but think--Debbie Harry wannabe. But that is the where the similarities end, because Debbie did it so convincingly, in her song 'Rapture.' 'American Life' fails, and miserably so. To call this 'brilliant,' as some of the obvious diehards are, is doing the rest of us an incredible disservice. I can just imagine Madonna having all of you in choke hold while you're writing your reviews...

I'd be interested to know why it was that Madonna thought she would include a 'rap' on the single, 'cos other than that, I think the song is not too bad. Oh, I'm a bit tired of Mirwais, too. I think the repetitive sounds are only tolerable, and on some of the tracks on this album they sound ok, but the live string instruments are much more enjoyable to listen to (and much more emotive, too). Lyrically, it's not great. On 'Music' and especially on 'Ray of Light', Madonna really shared some insight into, not only herself, but into her perspective of the world in a poetic way. On this album, it's much less poetic and a lot less insightful. There are some great songs on this album ('Mother & Father', 'Nothing Fails', and 'X-Static Process' and 'Easy Ride'), and all of them show a maturity in Madonna's vocal and guitar paying ability. I certainly don't think the CD is 'an embarrassment' to the music industry. On the contrary, I think it could have positive effects on the industry: 1. it could be a very good catalyst to other artists to start to broaden their subjective, and to 2. it could encourage artists to move away from the synthesised sound and get back to live instrumentation (or at least not imitate the sometimes annoying signature Mirwais sound). I've always thought that Madonna had very interesting things to say as an artist, and I think she has done this again on 'American Life' (which kinda makes me think that a lot of Americans are not going to enjoy being encouraged to think about how it is that so many people in their nation have become focussed predominantly on capitalism, celebrity, and world domination - as opposed to improving mental health and nurturing meaningful personal (and global) relationships). I just think it could've been a lot better said musically and lyrically.

This is an album for people who are able to read between the lines and appreciate the depth and skill that has been injected into this beautiful, often depressing, album. Dear Dave 1. If you're asking the people who are 'pseudo-politicking' to 'pi** off' re-read your post. 'Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones'. 2. How it it that you have access to Madonna's spending documents? I have no idea myself if she gives any money to 'people who need it', but we have to allow for the possibility that Madonna does actually do things without having a press confrence to inform the world of her every move. We're not all driven by ego and the need to be validated for every single thing we do. It is rather amateur to make a claim on which there is no evidence to ground the same. 3. I would be pleasantly shocked if there was a single person on this Earth who is not a puppet. We all adhere to a set of beliefs that stem from something outside of our own psyche/mind/matter. One would be sorely mistaken to think that for even one second, they could exclude oneself from this category. 4. To beg people to stop buying Madonna's music is rather totalitarian, isn't it? Who bestowed upon you the authority to enforce your opinion on others? 5. There is diversity in the world. Embrace it and be grateful. Have a nice day.

We've known for a while that Madonna is capable of producing some truly dross sh**e, but this takes the biscuit. After that bloody awful, pretentious cacophony that sadly passed for the title song of Die Another Day, an otherwise good film, we would have been justified in expecting a little respite, but no, she's at it again with quite possibly the worst song it has ever been my misfortune to hear. The theme of the song isn't hard to see; Madonna is unbelievably rich, rich as Cresus, money-coming-out-of-her-orifices rich, and she has realised that money can't buy you everything and possibly, just possibly, the materialisation of American culture (which traditionally had a hard-working, self-reliant and independent ethic) which she so encapsulates isn't the best thing since sliced bread. Congratulations for spotting the obvious. It would be wonderful if she gave some of her massive wad of cash to people who needed it; I am not an American, but on my frequent visits there I see deprivation, poverty, trailer parks, desperation and so on. The American Life is not what Madonna lives. This is the same crap we saw, though with, hard as it is to believe, a worse tune, in Frozen. On behalf of music lovers everywhere and the few people who have not heard the endless stream of rot she produces, please, please stop. Madonna has had some good songs and deserves a place in the pantheon of pop's elite, but to keep producing tripe like American Life while secure in the knowledge that an army of adoring muppets that pass for fans will buy it is, ahem, regrettable. As for the pseudo-politicking, pi** off. This self-serving river of bullsh** is not clever, not commentary, not political and not needed. Retire now.

First: whoever is comparing Madonna to J.Lo needs to be slapped upside the head and given a good lesson in popular culture and passion for music (ie. J.Lo ain't got it). Second: It is almost irrefutable that Madonna is one of the most socially and culturally influential personalities of the 20th Century. And if she's not influencing it, she's bl**dy well commenting about it in an honest way, and how many artists are doing this these days?. Third: The break-up of the dance songs with three more toned-down songs are intentional. Go back, listen to the album, and pay attention to the messages and how the movements of the album flow together: it's about the sh*t in the world right now, how her current relationship is helping her feel grounded, and then how she will continue to search for her true sense of self and the meaning of life despite the benefits given to her from being wealthy, falling in love, and generally feeling grounded, which is a search in which we should all be engaging. Fourth: Madonna is not trying to stay modern or contemporary. She is not trying to keep up with current music trends and hit the 'youth market' of music. Madonna's music has always been about new sounds - as crap or as good as they may sound. She is not about imitation. She is about creation. She is trying to create new sounds and demonstrate to other run-of-the-mill Svegali-created popstars that music is a process that is most successful when it is personal. And by 'successful', she is not trying to make the most money or sell the most records. And anyone who misses this point, is clearly nowhere near understanding what a) Madonna is about and b) what life is about. I don't think 'American Life' is the best Madonna record. (I would reserve that honor for Ray Of Light). However, the unusual mix of synth loops, R&B beats, and more live strings than on any other Madonna album has been a sound that was immediately appealing because everything else on the radio (same sound, different 'singer') is bland. The new sounds really stand out, especially on songs like 'Love Profusion' and 'Intervention'. Madonna and Mirwais find a perfect way to combine modern tech and classic strings. Of all her albums, 'American Life' demonstrates just how strong Madonna's vocals have become. When she sings with nothing but live strings on 'X-Static Process' and 'Easy Ride', it is nothing short of amazing. And her vocal on 'Mother & Father' is nothng short of raw, unadulterated passion for understanding herself and her life experiences. Madonna has never professed to having a great voice, but she sure as heck knows how to convey emotions, which is something that all the Britneys, J.Los, and Kylies out there have yet to achieve. Madonna's intent is to communicate honestly, and she does that successfully and with fresh sounds (which is a pleasant and long-overdue welcome to the other sh**e out there).

on a scale from one to ten, i give it a 'Total Crap'. Here's a little ditty for you: 'i have too much money!! american's love me! but there are poor people and we should help them, but i'm too rich!!!' well, madonna, eat a d*** and choke. What the hell are we supposed to get from this song? and 'it's amazing!! the rap is amazing!!' Vanilla Ice was better (and don't deny), and he was terrible. This is what makes things like 'Good Charlotte''s new song awful. They don't want to be just like you, they want to be just like every sad looking terd in that video. and also, did you see the chicks they got? NO REAL PUNK CHICKS WHERE THOSE CLOTHES, ARE THAT HOT, OR WOULD LISTEN TO GOOD CHARLOTTE. don't get me wrong, i'm as far from punk as madonna is from a rapper. point is, when will good music come back into style. until then, listen to tool, he who corrupts, dillinger escape plan, meshuggah, the vandals, a perfect circle.

The first single is poor by Madonna's standards. However, I still bought the album thinking there would be better tracks, as I liked her previous two albums. I've heard the album a few times, and a lot of the tracks are very weak, even worse than 'American Life'!. Her singing voice is weak, and a lot of the songs lack melody and emotion, and they don't get you on the first listen. However, two of the tracks are worth mentioning - the dance track 'Love Profusion' and the cool 'Mother and Father'. Overall the album is a big dissapointment, but a very few tracks out of the 11 tracks show that Madonna with the help of her producers still has it in her.

Anyone that can't get passed the pretty colors of the video and the supposed 'controversy' surrounding the title track to realize the genius behind this album needs to check themselves for musical incapabilities. Every track on the album is single worthy and every track is well produced. Ray of Light was great, Music was a mere stepping stone, and American Life hits right on the money. A perfect ten for Madonna and Mirwais. Guess we can all thank Bush for making the great American Democracy into the great American hypocrisy by using 9/11 as a propaganda tool to wreak havoc on a poverish nation in search of imaginery WMD's and the evil Iraquaeda man. Too bad some Americans are so blindsided by their force fed CNN to see the real truth behind this war. Only in America do they celebrate the thug life by giving a recording contract to the pimps and gun bearers, yet frown upon anyone that stands up and speaks the obvious truth in the matter. Some of you people should be thankful you didn't grow up in the 60's and 70's when tons of great music came about from the state of the nations. We need more artists like Madonna that actually have the gull to intermix her particular feelings through her art rather than being another pre-pressed travesty. Thumbs up, Madonna, for maintaining in the eyes of cynics and for giving us another great album for the collection. People should be taking notes rather than being disrespectful.

All politics aside, Madonna's new song and album sucks. Sad day for Americans when we believe all the B.S. that jealous idiot non-Americans tell us about our alleged imperfections (like we're not already aware of them.) Isn't it just as American and Democratic to stomp on the Dixie Chicks' albums as it is for Natalie Maines to say what she did about President Bush? I don't really see Madonna as being representative of the American population as a whole since many of us struggle to make ends meet and provide the BEST for our families, but when we have extra cash, we choose to give more away to those less fortunate than the people of other countries give. Madonna has obviously taken for granted the free enterprise system that allowed her to become one of the wealthiest women in the world. Elitist celebrities have been speaking out against America and democracy for a long time, so it's not a new phenomenon... it's just that until recently, we had almost forgotten as a country what it means to be an American and we were apathetic to celebrities' distorted opinions. Not to slight non-americans but there are a lot of idiots everywhere. Sad day for the rest of the world when America is the last standing democratic nation and the citizens of other countries choose to be ruled by kings and dictators because they believed the Anti-american lies.

There's a few songs I like such as 'Nobody Knows Me,' 'Hollywood,' 'X-Static Process,' and 'Easy Ride.' I think what makes the album such a disaster are the lyrics, which could've been written better by a preschooler. No depth to the album whatsoever! I miss the old Madonna.

I'm not the biggest fan of the single 'American Life' but you have to admit it is better than all the other cookie-cutter music on the radios now that all sounds the same. At least we can count on Madonna to give us a different perspective whether everyone agrees with it or not. In fact, I admire her for still being controversial, even if the controversy is toned down. Why are some Americans are so self centered? I think Madonna dares to speak the truth about Americans, our thinking, our fears, our success, etc. I don't think most Americans like to hear the ugly side of us. This is an excellent CD but NOT FOR UNITED STATES (AMERICANS). This album is too much for Americans to handle, but it will do extremely well in the rest of the world. Again, most Americans think that she is too much to handle especially those from the South. I think this CD will be a disaster in U.S right now, but it will be a big hit later. Madonna scares Warner Bros. In conclusion, it is a great album but it hurts our feelings. For those who rated 0 for this album, please settle down your anger and frustration in your life before you listen to her songs.

Then something happened in 1998 and I have enjoyed everything she has released. Because I am not a die hard fan, I can look at things objectively. Here is my objective opinion: The songs is okay, and if nothing else, is a nice change from whatever else the radio is playing. The album, however, is amazing. It's like 'American Life' doesn't even belong on the album. Very acoustic, almost smooth 70's feel at times, but still modern. The album is a 10.

Should've quit working with Mizwais while she was ahead. Nothing grown breaking here, just something to say and not saying it well, melodically. Everyone is sick of the loop, remnants of Die Another Day. This isn't her best work. Forgive this(Oakenfold is a genius!!!) single, move to the album. Regain your faith in Madonna.

I'm wondering how many of the people that have given this album a bad review are American. It seems like as soon as an artist dares to speak out against the US in any form, that artist is immediately panned by the whole nation. Now, I'm not an American-hater, but for God's sake, it's just a song! I happen to like it, and, while I feel that it's possibly not as accessible to the masses as the majority of her work, with the possible exception of Music (the album), it's still a damned good song (I also rate the album highly, whereas I thought Music was a bit ropey in parts). Besides, do any of you really think Her Madgeness gives a f*ck what any of us think? It's not like she needs the money, is it? And her die-hard fanbase, myself included, will still buy it.

What happened to the good old days when Madonna simply sang about how much of a s*** she was? It seems like another pop-star feels as though they can write meaningful, well-written social commentary without any sort of writing talent present. As far as the first minute or so, the lyrics are incredibly cliche, the music is repetitive and her voice is out of key most of the time...and it all gets worse from here. Not only can she not sing anymore, but she can't rap. This single is trash, and if the rest of the album -- disregarding the 'musical arrangement' of this one -- follows in a similar vein of a profound lack of talent and naive political rambling, then I'll save my $15 or so for whiskey, and drink away the pain of the death of rock n roll, pop and rap, which she has sadly contributed to (in at least two cases now). So much for bowing out gracefully. Chalk up another victory for the Hollywood Money w****s.

Unbelievable...and I mean that in the purest sense of the word! If I didnt know any better, Id say that Madonna has employed her 'agent, chef Three nannies, assistant, driver, trainer, butler, bodyguard (or five?) gardener and stylist' to write her music these days. Although I suppose it doesnt take a musical ear to slap nonsensical lyrics over her already generic 'Music' and resell it to the masses... She is beginning to stoop to Ja-Rules flexibility level. good lord Madonna! Such talent, such a gift with music, with words, with the unconventional...this is such a poor representation of both Madonna's musical abilities and a truly skewed perception on the 'American life' - Get a clue and get back to what you are good at...its not techno!

i will say i think this song was produced in a cheap way,it was like she just made it but never thought about elevating it to higher grounds, but after one week of listeing, ive come to listen to it a lot, partly because its growing on me and the fact that its the new madonna single but not really because its a great song.. i will admit madonna has lost touch with the common person but the common person only likes superficial stuff..madonnas different ever since she went electronica in 1998, I WOULD RATHER HAVE MADONNA MAKING GOOD SPIRITUAL THEME MUSIC WITH FEWER FANS ,tha to have madonna with a huge fan base making crapy songs such as Vogue or Like a Virgin. so to the person who said ray of light sucked..get a clue on life..that won a GRAMMY for best POP album. The single has true lyrics BUT I THINK MADONNA PURPOSELY WROTE IT TO BE A SIMPLE..simplicity is a classic style,it makes a complex and true message more accessibale to more people as oppose to writing deep lyrics like in Ray if Light.. the single =7 the album =9..i mite change mind as i have more listens

I have liked Madonna over the last 20 years, not everything she has done do I care for. She is an entertainer much more than a talented singer. Lets face it her voice isn't very good. I just watched her song American Life on MTV. It was terrible. The lyrics were a joke. I'm a boy-I'm a girl. What the hell is that? Really deep Madonna. Not to mention her outfit? Why the hell is she wearing a french get-up to sing American Life. She needs to get an American clue.

This is the worst Madonna song and album ever! What makes it even more awful is that she doesn't practice what she preaches. She expresses herself like a soccer mom or bored housewife. If this is what an 'American Life' is, it is a bad example to the rest of the world. Madonna better hope its banned not due to contraversy but because it is so amateur and boring.

I can't stop playing it. Every song (beside AL and DAD) are awesome. I won't say that it's better than Ray of Light, but it's just as good, at least to me. LOVE IT!!!

Don't judge an album by the title track. An interesting/risky/misguided choice for the first single. This isn't a great song and no where near the best track on an otherwise very strong and confident album. If you prefer Madonna's acoustic gently powerful songs, buy the album and start from track two.

People, If you don't like American life, don't worry it's definitly the worst song on the album and that comment is coming from someone who likes American Life. I strongly suggest those of you did not like American Life the single to listen to the new version on MTV, a remix by Paul Oakenfold. This version solves all the problems American Life has and it is very hip. I know Z100 in NY and KIIS in LA are all playing the new version because face it, the original version is too choppy. And this new version is getting great response. American Life just made the biggest jump in Canadian top 40 history by jumping from #101 to #1. Based on current radio airplay, the single is now jumping leaps and bounds in the States with the remix being the favorite play. It is estimated to move from #27 to #15 on Radio/Record chart this week and move from #37 to #20 on Billboard.

American Life, the single is choppy, and lacks the usual stunning quality of a lead single from a new Madonna album. The Paul Okenfold mix is far superior to the album cut! I have to admit, although I will never like American Life as much as the song Music, it has grown on me more as I listen more. That is actually common with many of her songs. It is as if you need a key to unlock the magic sometimes with her. The album over all I suspect is better than her last. Mother and Father is truly groundbreaking, and Nothing Fails is very moving. I also can't help but bob my head to Love Profusion. The album is a winner, and time will tell.

Maybe it's still because as a nation we cant really believe a woman can be that good! Listen to the album. Musically it is great, and it's a nice place she has arrived at. 'American Life' should've not only been left off the album but the masters should've been erased, chopped up, burned and launched into deep space. I'm all for artists writing their own material but I think for the public's sake, Madonna should hire a lyricist. She's one, ahem, 'artist' that should NOT (excuse the phrasing) express herself.

The George Bush thing in the end is just comedic than insulting, people just need to lighten up. As for the rest of the album ( I listened on mtv.com) 'Nothing Fails' is by far my favorite song! The gospel chorus at the end is very moving and will stick in your head after hearing it. The one song I will constantly skip over is 'Die Another Day' I never liked that song because it carries no melody. Another new song would have been much better in its place. Nevertheless, I like AL as much as Ray of Light and a lot more than Music. Great Job!

This time around 'electronica' takes a back seat and acoustics bring unity to the album. Ok, so Die Another Day is Madonna worst song since Nothing Really Matters, and American Life is SOMETHING but we can´t seem to figure out wether that something is BRILLIANT or STUPID. Listen to the Paul O. Remix and you can form a better opinion. Nevertheless the album is at the very least, better than Music. Hollywood or Love Profusion are just a taste of how musically good (in its own genre, of course) American Life is going to be. Nothing Fails seems small but bursts into a super ballad hard to resist. Intervention is a stand out track from the very first listen. X Static Process is an acoustic piece with probably the best lyrics of the set (which is not very hard to outdo). Why the track listing is once again a F***ING mess is beyond me: The dance songs are separated by 3 downtempo tracks in a row, American Life is placed as the opening track (it doesn´t represnt the spirit of the album whatsoever), etc.

I have been a big fan of hers for a long time, even more so after ray of light and music, but I think that she is reaching the end of her elctronic stage. While I do like the album, especially Nobody knows me, it's a little on the sedate side for me, at least compared to 'Music'.I really do wish she released the American life video. This song was mediocre. I quite liked the beat, although when she starts to sound like Jennifer Lopez, you know who has the upper hand. As for the lyrics, I was seriously disturbed at how BAD they are. They just about scan, which is to her credit, but she has NOTHING TO SAY. Her wry observations apply for about 0.001% of the population and are not even well expressed. This song has taught me to expect nothing from the mainstream music industry except a stream of unmitigated sh**e for the next 20 years. Summary: embarrassingly bad

When AMERICAN LIFE first hit the radiowave, I thought it was going to be a bomb. Thank God for Oakenfold, this downtempo Oakenfold remix is really saving the single from a disaster. Station like Z100 New York was not playing the song, but hey, with the remix just came out, the song is now moving up the chart and becoming #4 most request single. And it is currently the most request or 2nd most request single at KIIS Los ANGELES. Oakenfold remix solves all the problem the original single has and makes it really hip and humming. The single had a slow climb on the chart and now is making leaps. I predict #1 in the future for this song as the DJs across the nation are dropping the original single in favor of the remix.

I think most of these reviews are being lenient. Madonna has been going downhill for a long time. This 'song' is one of the more moronic things she's done. The Rap is a complete joke (I'm laughing right now just thinking about it) and the music just one big loop...except for the chorus, where the song changes altogether. I also think her political stance is pretty self-serving, but that is a different issue.

Madonna is my idol.*bows down*This song, while not as good as her previous hits,is an excellent sound fro her right now.She somehow manages to always stay current with her music, and she has done so with 'AMerican Life' by adding a more R&B feel to this track, which is a lot different than her techno/dance music of the past few years. The rap is actually pretty good considering that she is white.lol The chorus maybe could have been a little better,it sorta stands apart from the rest of the song. But overall,Madonna has once again delivered another stellar track to her fans with,of course, her usual controversy.

'American Life' is the first single off Madonna's upcoming, highly appraised 10th studio album also titled 'American Life.' I gave the song an eight because of the musical quality, which in my opinion isn't a 10. I'm a huge Madonna fan but I think the song can be much better. It needs more than just a loop playing in the background. However, the lyrics are very powerful and true. The remix of the song by Paul Oakenfold is amazing and is why the song has reached where it is so far. I expect the song to enter the top 40 atleast; maybe even the top 20. I think that this just isn't what people were expecting but I think Madonna will surprise us again with one of her new songs and will hopefully hit number 1.

I don't think it is Madonna's BEST song, but for a career of 20 years, you can't always have perfection. Still, very good, especially when compared to everything else out there. The video adds so much too... it's a shame it was pulled. Try to see it if you can.

The first single off Madonna's upcoming album, 'American Life.' Exellent song! It does need a few listens to get the meaning and beat...very addictive though. The beat loops too much and the song could've been much better but the meaning is so true. The rap is absolutely amazing.
