I have heard this song many, many times in the past, but it was not until I became 'unwell' that I really LISTENED to it. I am a medical professional that has evaluated and treated mental illness in one form or another for over a decade and thought I had a very good understanding of the various diseases that fall into this broad category. I was wrong. With the possible exception of Psychiatrists nobody understands most mental illness. Not MDs, not nurses, not social workers, not the patients themselves, and certainly not the general public. Illness is defined as a deviation from the norm. The problem is nobody REALLY knows what the mental 'norm' is. It varies from culture to culture, family to family, and even person to person. People are afraid of the unknown and they most often react to fear with agression. 'Is that guy crazy or just an a**hole?!?! Who cares? F*ck him!' is a typical fear/agression response. As such it is VERY difficult for most people to seek or gain help and this is very significant when you figure that 1 in 5 people will suffer from mental illness of one sort or another in their lifetime. Although I am NOT a Matchbox 20 fan, I think that this song gives 'unwell' people a chance to express their feelings and frustrations in a nonthreatening way and also opens up a rarely found forum of communication on the subject. Unfortunately, this is a double edged sword though. It also allows the ignorant and stupid (the words have different meanings, look them up)to voice a prejudiced and uneducated opinion (like Butterman's) that can be harmful to others. Having said all that, this is supposed to be a review of the song, not the illness(es)that it referrs to. The song has great instrumentals, very good vocals, and excelent lyrics for a pop song. The Butterman was right in one aspect. The theme of mental illness has been covered a lot in music, but think about why. 20% of the population (including song writers) will suffer it's wrath at some time and Shakespeare said it best 'There are no new stories; only retelling of old stories.' For those of you that have never suffered from mental illness, God bless you. For those of us that have, God help us!

I am not usually taken in by negative lyrics, but Rob Thomas's outstanding songwriting capabilities such as in this song topped by his brilliant vocas have made me love Matchbox 20. Jenny, I don't think, you could half as much even dream of creating a song of such magnificence. And Buttergirl, Yes they play songs such as this on the radio, because they are GREAT and deserve this much publicity.... Well, Isn't that OBVIOUS!????

Jeez this song has been on the radio since summer 2003 now its 2005. Its a horrible song no wonder it took 2 years for it to get noticed and for people to start liking it. i've read so many revews and for so many people they had to litsen to it so many times until they learned they liked it. which is kind of stupid becauseyou should only have to litsen to a song once to know you like it or not.

Another horrible song from a horrible band. Wimpy Knob Thomas in that wussy 'Love Me' shirt makes me gag almost as much as the guitarist, when he makes that corny Zoolander face constantly. Then they bow at the end of the vid, like theyve achieved something great. LOL! Theyre a total joke.

Qute a powerful song, plays on all the right strings, sharing with the well propulation how it feels to be unwell. Gets me to tears everytime. The lyrics suggest there is another way to view someone who is depressed. Just a powerful, beuatifuuly put descrption of feelings that are afraid o come out. Great job.

I love this song. I find it kind of incredulous that some of you would insult people that were helped by this song. If this song helped you, I say good for you. Butterman, you need to get over yourself. Rob Thomas didn't win those Grammys for nothing. He is one of the best songwriters out there. Even his voice is one of the good ones on the radio. If you think this song is horrible, go listen to some Hilary Duff, or some of the rap songs out there today. Then come back and tell me you still think this song is bad. Matchbox Twenty is one of the only credible bands left on the radio today. This is a great song.

I really Love this song! For some people to bash it and say that it is shallow, well that's a little rude. If this song can help some people, I think that's awesome. For you to say that it's ridiculous is just kind of rude and mean. I love this song, but everyone's entitled to their own opinion. Rob Thomas is one of the great songwriters of our time. If you don't like this, then go listen to some Hilary Duff songs or some junk like that. Maybe then you'll appreciate what a great song this is. Get over yourself butterman. Matchbox twenty is one of the credible bands still left out there.

Listening to it now I find it to sound like a positive song. And I believe that their previous single 'Disease' is also written about the same thing. This song is incredibly melodic and catchy. I suffer from an anxiety disorder (chronic GAD) day in day out and to write a song like this is a signal of hope for people like me, who do have mental disorders because we're not crazy. It does seem to describe something like split personality though.

As many songs I have heard from matchbox twenty, seldomnly have I been able to listen to one song for hours on end as I've been able to do with this one. matchbox twenty to me, is simply one of the greatest bands I've heard in a long time. Most would assume that this song is about an illness of some sort, but if you truly listened and understood the words then you would/could also begin to see the part that the song really isn't about him being sick, but more about him being insecure. Rob Thomas is easily one of the best songwriters around so it's not rare for you to maybe hear a song by mb twenty on the radio and be hooked, but if you buy their cds you would see how amazing some of the less reckognized songs are. 'Unwell' I agree with the most of you that it is a classic and that it will be one of the greatest songs this year and years to come until the next mb twenty album. But, if you like the song then go buy their (3)albums and truly get the full stint of how gifted and great the band really is!

The first time I heard it on the radio, I wondered to myself what a sick society we live in for such a song to make a hit... but then when I downloaded the video of this song and have watched it over and over, I've come to think that maybe it's everybody else but the person in the song that's really sick! Ha! What a revelation! This is the first Matchbox Twenty song I've ever heard, and I love it sooo much!

I’m not much of a sentimental person but my past has redirected my thinking. There were times when I hated so much of myself that I just wanted to stop. I tried to shatter the gift that God has given, and because of that action, I have become a crazy and tainted creature among my friends. It’s hard to tell them that I’m not a crazy person and this song has given me a voice. Thank you.

This song brings tears to my eyes!! I absolutely love it. Two years ago I became ill with depression and anxiety. I also suffer from panic. It is like this song was written for me. It describes what it is like to live with my illness on a daily basis. Some people don't understand that mental illness is just that - an illness. It is caused by a chemical imbalance. 'I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell.' Those words say it all!

The people that came here just to say something bad about Jezza are the true immature children. How dare you tell someone what they are supposed to feel when they hear music!! I related to this song in a different way than he did. I think it describes social anxiety and depression to a 'T'! So you don't have to take medication just to feel 'normal'? Well f***ing good for YOU!! You should be GLAD that you don't have to! It sucks to have to take medication but at least people can get help. A**holes like you people just trying to tear others down DOESN'T help! This song is a MASTERPIECE. It hits the proverbial nail on the head and never gets old.

But i like the song wether I'm having a bad day or not. Everyone can relate somehow to the song.

This song is unlike any I have ever heard. You can't understand it if you are not 'one of us'. 'One of us' meaning someone with a serious anxiety disorder. This is not about a teenager that feels like he is not accepted by his peers...this goes much much deeper. Anxiety disorders strike 10% of our population some worse than others. For me, it is social anxiety and I just wanted the crazyness to end. It takes time and effort to overcome anxiety but it can be done. I am well on my way. Thank God there is help out there through cognitive therapy and medication. Don't give up!

'Unwell' is a pretty nice song to listen to. matchbox twenty is back in the music world. Let recall what matchbox twenty has achieved in the past 3 years. Well, they do have a string of hits, including 'Bent', one of their No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, then 'If You're Gone', a really romantic track, and 'Mad Season'. Earlier this year 2003, they released 'Disease', a song written by Rob Thomas and Mick Jagger. 'Unwell' finally caught our attention. Luckily enough, they have a place in the top 10 of Billboard Hot 100 Singles. I congratulate them for their success as they manage to outplay some of the stupid rap songs out there. The opening part of the song sounds beautiful (may I ask which musical instrument do they use for that part?) Hmmm... The chorus is easy to remember. Kinda like a sing-along song. Overall, 'Unwell' is an excellent single. Thumbs up from me!

Unwell is a good, somewhat above average song. Typical, yes, but also uniquely Matchbox Twenty. The groupings of people you listed that would like the song Butterman, unfortunately make up a fairly large portion of the population im sure...which likely could account for its popularity. It is overplayed, so for those of you who adore Rob and the guys leave your radio on, and for those of you who dont, just turn it off. Its as simple as that.

This is what I am getting at (see Jezza's review below). Have we come to the point where we are so narcissistic that we enjoy our own misery, over-dramaticize our own problems, and turn our lives into our own little 'reality tv specials.' If you can relate personally to this drivel you could be: 1. a melodramatic fool (drama queen) 2. needing to reassess your life 3. needing to get a grip (try drugs, they can be very sobering...) 4. in highschool or under the age of 17. 5. not too far beyond room tempature in the IQ department 6. needing to grow the hell up Jezza: Get a hold of yourself. -The Butterman ............. ''Review #62 submitted: July 13, 2003 by: Jezza rating: 10 (out of 10) This song is so powerful and moving. I relate to this song as lately I have become quite socially disfunctional, and the words he elegantly sings hit me so hard. It is like he is singing what I think every day. I see this song as an apology to a lover/friend, a request for support and forgiveness, to undrestand the problems he has and not leave him alone. I sang this to my girlfriend whom I am having problems with, and I hope she sees what I see so clearly thanks to this song.''

Patriarch wrote (parentheses are my reponses): 'slammed by the likes of 'ButterMan' and 'they'renotthatgreat'. Since those two are obviously music gurus they could surely write better lyrics (sure could) and create soul-touching tunes (actually I have)that would captivate the hearts of music lovers from every corner of the earth...(wouldn't want to stoop to that mediocrity)' Hey man, I don't claim to be able to write crappy, mediocre lyrics that the 'majority' of people would relate to. The writing I do for a living requires thinking and isn't for the masses (especially as the average IQ has dropped over the last 50 years). And most people have trouble thinking. I would never claim to be writer for the masses. But you are right, you don't know diddly-poo about me--so I would quit guessing. -The Butterman

Rob Thomas is certainly underrated as a pop craftsman. 'Unwell' might be one of his best songs, although he may never top 'Smooth.'

This song is so powerful and moving. I relate to this song as lately I have become quite socially disfunctional, and the words he elegantly sings hit me so hard. It is like he is singing what I think every day. I see this song as an apology to a lover/friend, a request for support and forgiveness, to undrestand the problems he has and not leave him alone. I sang this to my girlfriend whom I am having problems with, and I hope she sees what I see so clearly thanks to this song.

Matchbox Twenty burst on the scene with the positively horrible 'Push,' and have been pretty hit-or-miss since, so the singles off their last album have been nice surprises. I don't know what have made them so good all of a sudden. Maybe it's the song's cool and fairly unique banjo riff. Maybe it's the band's newly democratic approach to songwriting. Maybe it's because Rob Thomas has finally learned how to sing. Whatever the reason, the boys have put out one of the best mainstream rock songs of the millenium.

The hit-single 'Unwell' isn't quite a classic for several impending reasons, but is by no means tumultuous enough to be slammed by the likes of 'ButterMan' and 'they'renotthatgreat'. Since those two are obviously music gurus they could surely write better lyrics and create soul-touching tunes that would captivate the hearts of music lovers from every corner of the earth....But that would be unfair for me to say that they even have such capabilties. Sorry guys.

There isn't a thing original about the lyrics to this song. There are literally hundreds (and more) songs that deal with feeling a 'little crazy.' He's just singing the same ol' stuff so many others have: a self-absorbed song that focuses on how 'I'm kind of losing it', and 'no one understands me'--the type of narcissim that seems to turn you kids on these days (hey man, my tears are dropping for you). I've seen deeper thoughts by 13 year olds and a guy named Jack Handey. The best part of this song is the music...The banjo is actually pretty cool. And then he open his mouth and it goes downhill from there....Wake up people! This is not 'deep.' It is SHALLOW! When will you understand? You're killing me...I'm melting... -The Butterman

Maybe it has something to do with being a software/firmware engineer. I am totally in love with this song. It does describe 'my' world. A world no one else has ever unveiled. Tom T. Hall came close to lyrically rubbing up next to my world. And Waylon Jennings' 'One Step Over The Line' described a lot of how I feel, but 'Unwell' is me

This is an awesome song! I don't understand how people cannot like it. However, like all songs, it admittedly can be a bit sickening if you hear it too much. If you have the album, listen to the song on repeat for half a day and then hear it on the radio, I'm sure that you can get sick of it. The lyrics are very catchy, which probably influences people's claims that they're sick of it. However, you must admit that it is very different, it's memorable, we can all relate to it and the song is a lot of fun to sing! Go M20 for bringing us yet another awesome album. As if these guys haven't done well - been around since about 95 and eight years later they are still releasing songs that are fresh and timeless. Well done.

ive been a so-so M20 fan since they released their first album. I believe Unwell stands out from their other songs as well as most songs today cuz it speaks about depression, and other human sentiments that most songs nowadays dont talk about. The first time I heard it, the lyrics hit me hard as they really speak about how depressed individuals are taken for granted, or misunderstood. The song's melody or video may not earn any awards but M20 deserves a pat on the back for speaking about the condition most people suffer from. Somehow, when you hear the song its like the songwriter says, its ok... im writing this song to let you know youre not alone-- i know how youre feeling. And about the video, i dont mind it being a bit strange...i'd call it surreal. The video captures logical inconsistencies and bizarre images to portray to viewers how people sometimes can, in fact, act differently from their normal behavior because of certain circumstances that may have affected them.

about the words and the video ... i have a friend who has bpd (borderline personality disorder) and this song is like it has been written by her. It means so much to her to hear someone this famous sing about stuff that she goes through every day. And I know her and the stuff she goes through and I think this song is amazing. People who know anything about bpd will understand what I mean. Even the video ... the people in the train moving their lips and looking generally scary to him is something people with bpd actually experience. I wonder from what experience this song was written ... is it just coincidence??? And people with bpd are not crazy, they are just a little unwell. My friend is the best software engineer i know. She is brilliant.

I personally think this song is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard (though I can relate to it, so that kinda skews my opinion). Some say it sounds like like their other songs, I have to disagree. I personally think they put a lot of heart into this song, and it gives off that vibe IMO. They also include a banjo for the main lick, which is a daring move I must say, but it turns out wonderful. But it definitely has that matchbox sound; I've never considered myself a 'fan' of them, but I've always liked their music -- this one has won me over. The lyrics aren't your standard love song, and the message is sorta fresh compared to all the other songs out nowadays. I absolutely love this song -- this coming from a diehard metalhead.

Not the best or most noteworthy song on the album, but definitely a great choice for a single. It might be overplayed or whatever, but it's radio-friendly and a really good way to rope in new mb20 fans. Plus, it isn't as same-old-same-old as all that...not many songs out there with electric banjos... And the lyrics are original, not the cliched crap about love and unlove everyone else writes.

It should be the top song on this chart. I also find it clever to have that as their second single off their new album right after Disease. Keep putting out those great songs guys.
