The girl in the video is Corrine Carrey, age 23. She is the niece of Jim Carrey. I grew up with her in Minnesota until she moved to Cali during grade school. She did some modeling to help pay her way through college and then landed this video. She was also in a K. Swiss commercial. She actually went out with Adam around that time. Her parents are divorced and I believe her father is a director. She has one brother, Max, who is a few years younger than her.

this song is absolutely great. I love maroon5, the songs have meanings, and aren't all about sex, and s***s and hoochie mamas.
so about the song. I thought i understood the song. Until i saw the video, that just confused the sh** out of me.
so before the vieo i thought the songs mean there was this guy who had a friend who was getting abused by her boyfriend. he loved her, but knew she didn't love him. He says he will always be there for her, even when she keeps goign back to the abusive boyfriend (i take it as emotional abuse, just cus of the song. I dont htink it's physical abuse)
'I know that goodbye means nothing at all
Comes back and begs me to catch her every time she falls'
that i interepreted as when she tells the boyfriend it's over, he knows that she doesnt mean it and she will always go back to the boyfrined. and she always wants him to pick up her piecea after the bf abuses her more.

My heart is full and my door's always open
You can come anytime you want'
i took this as he will always love her no matter what, rainbows/butterflies symbolize happiness and so he's saying there's not always happy endings. 'it's comprimise that moves us along' that basically means if she loves someone else he will let her go. But she can come to him anytime.
BUT THEN.
i saw the mv, and that just confused the hell out of me. so if someone could explain the correspondance between the lyrics and the music video that's be great! thanks!

I rate this song so highly...for all of you who diss Maroon 5, first of all, why are you watching and listening to their songs if you don't like them?? Second of all, I've been learning guitar for four years and I bought their music book last year (the one with all the chords and notes for the album SAJ) for a song analysis of This Love, and my guitar teacher also teaches me their songs (by request of course) and I have to say that on many an occasion he has said 'wow that is such an interesting choice of chords, it is extremely rare to find chords like that in a song' and even my brother who studies at the VCA in Victoria, Australia (where we are from) has commented on how difficult but interesting the chords are. What do we all rememember This Love by? the catchy chorus and syncopated intro bits don't we? Just think about what you say before you criticise Maroon 5, I'm not saying you all have to love them, but just at least respect them for producing and writing their own music. Cheers

for all the people who think this song sucks YOU'RE STUPID!!! either that or you're just not into this kind of music, but to say that this is not a good song is ridiculous. maybe this is out of what you're used to or maybe you just don't like it, but there's no need to talk bad about it. and those who say that they have no talent, well let me ask you something? how many of you can sing, write, or play an instrument? not many people can sing at all whatsoever, not many can write a song at all(Much less a good one), and not many people are dedicated enough to learn how to play an instrument. and out of those who can, very few can do more than one of these things. and for those who keep saying that it was played over and over well guess what(Turn off the f***ing radio!) Unless they had the radio on where you work at and there was nothing you could do about it, then shut up!!! A lot of the people who b***h about how much they play a song on the radio are the same ones who have the radio on on purpose and who have it on that station on purpose. if you don't listen to the radio as often, you won't get tired of the songs as much. and the real reason you get tired of repeated songs isn't because they're repeated, but because you're not in charge. when you have it in your cd player and you play it over and over you can't get enough of it, but when you hear it over and over on the radio, you hate it. so quit hating and turn off the radio if it's really that annoying.

I love this song. The lyrics are so deep and meaningfull and the melody is awesome!!
Although I do find the film clip kinda confusing because before I saw the clip I thought the song was about the young prostetute always being hurt, and the guy loves her and is always there for her.
But then the clip shows this old-woman (possibly her mother) actually being hurt and he loves her, and they swap at the end, but the young girl doesn't fit into it.......
AURGHH!!! So confusing!!! Can anyone explain it simply?!!!

Yes, the song is confusing through out the video but after listening and watching the music clip a fair few times here is my own personal response. I strongly believe the meaning of the song is in his love for her. The song simply talks about her breaking up with him and that nothing is can always go perfect life. compromise is a further step in making there relationship last and that he is willing to fight on.

This song made me cry because on MTV movie awards Rachael McAdams and some guy. Starred in the movie Notebook and won for best kiss. This song had such a profound effect on me. It was the reason behind me buying hte album. And replying to Review #181, Jane is Adam's ex girlfriend, and they had a very difficult breakup a few months before the band changed it's name to Maroon 5 (previously Kara's Flowers). And the album contains song that are literally about jane.
I'm not sure about the video but i think the song is dedicated to jane. Messages such as 'it's not alwways rainbows and butterflies' is basically him telling her that life's not always good.
Anyway, the reason this song was had such a great meaning for me was that it inspired me to ask out my girlfriend. And also she constantly reminds me that I look exactly like Adam. In fact, when the video first came on, she thought it was me and was very confused to say the least.

Hey I agree with all the guys bagging the song, it is pure pop BUT it has a really beautiful melody and the arrangments are very nice.
Some of you can even spell Maroon 5 properly so who are you to say what a good song is and furthermore, do any of you know how hard it can be to write a catchy melody like this one, its not like plugging in the guitar and coming out with some ancient thrash metal riff.

i've been looking for the orginal meaning for this song, which doesnt seem to exsist. quiet a few suggest what you say (forums on m5 site), but none explain the ending. i believe the meaning through out the clip play yo suggest him wanting the mum. but at the end you notice that she replaces him coming down the stairs and in a few other snips. i think the full meaning of the clip suggests that its actually her saying goodbye to him, she has always been there for him but she can try no more. i feel the song is write for the clip but the meaning of the song is in her love for him. the meaning of the lyrics along talk about standing on the side watching and waiting, trying hard and being there with all their own love, 'It's not always rainbows and butterflies, It's compromise that moves us along', 'I know that goodbye means nothing at all' and that 'she will be loved' is about the young girl that has to say good bye to him.
as with most clips, i think it can be taken for your own meaning, whether male or female, loosing a love or leaving for another.
so yer, i think its got a double meaning that is shown in the end with the young girl trading places with him, and that lyrics are worded for the clip but meant for the love and loss from the young girls veiw.
to me the song and words have meaning in this kind of way as i am going though much of the meaning now with my gf. she is lost in her ways and the words of the song describe how i feel towards her. and quiet afew of the phrases match meanings of other things we've been through.. oddly.

This is a most beautiful song. For those who were confused about the video, heres my take on it.. please be warned its only my personal interpretation so i could be wrong. Now the video itself shows that he is actually in love with his girl friend's mom. The mom is abused and neglected. And the hero of the song saves her/supports her everytime she gets hurt by her husband. He realizes how beautiful and complicated she really is. He cares about the girlfriend, but he has falllen deeply for the mother.. she is graceful, chaotic and intriguing to him. He watches her all the time.. and his heart is always with her. The fact that in the end , he runs to het is because he cannot take it anymore.. meaning the sharade of not loving her deeply. I also think that the first line 'beauty queen of only 18' refers to the mother's past life. she was this beautiful young girl, who probably got caught up in a different world and ended up marrying a man very early on. Hence in the video, you can also see her hubby looks atleast 15 years older than her, and she looks 40ish. So the being '18' reference is for his true love as well. He cant keep away from her anymore. thats my take on it:) Great great great song. I can bet you so so so many people can not only relate to the song.. but also to the video...
