Have any of you just sat down and read the Bible for a long time and just kind of studied the text? Well if you have then you probably noticed that in a deep, focused state, you look 'like a stone' (so to speak.)

i really don't know why any of you who have 'no clue', even bother to post your comments about how the 'pagan' referance turned you off, and to think that the opening line is 'a cold wet afternoon' that is about the cheesiest imagery i've ever heard and would have no place in a lyric as poetic, insightful, and beautifully written as this. and by the way zach rocks or rocked or whatever but to hear chris cornell sing with this band, makes it all too obvious that he wasn't much of a 'singer'. chris' vocals if you care to really listen
are some of the best you'll ever hear. gotta hand it to you chris, the lyrics alone grabbed me by the booboo.

I've been listening to this song for months. A friend sent it to me. I think it is an amazing song.
At the time of first hearing it, I didn't even know who Audioslave was or that the members came from Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden, I just liked the song because it's a good song.
I think the people who are posting here giving ratings of zero are all biased fans of Rage Against the Machine who aren't willing to accept change.
You'll understand good music and enjoy good music a whole lot more if you set aside the pretenses and the politics.

I love this song. But people take way to heart when he says 'I will pray to the Gods and the angels like a pagan. -To anyone who will take me to heaven'. I don't think his trying to imply that pagans are a bunch of Gods seeking people just to get sumthin they want. I think his imply that he will pray any way necessary for him to get to heaven. No matter if it's christian or pagan for that matter.

Terrible.
I hope Chris Cornell comes out and declares that Audioslave was intended as a joke.
I can tell now, why Cornell's so much shallower than others like Vedder, Gossard, etc; and how much SoundGarden needed all four (Thayil, Cameron, Shepherd, Cornell) to just be in that frenzy, to survive.

I'd say top of my all time favorites. You really have to listen to his voice closely to see the greatness of this song. As much as I hate any form of religion or fools blinded by some mythical figure that was misrepresented in a comic, I totally agree its a musical master piece.

This is a powerful, haunting song whose lyrics seems to confuse a lot of people unnecessarily. A man (perhaps a member of a rock ban, like Chris Cornell himself) finds himself with nothing to do (a cobweb afternoon) in a motel room (a room full of emptiness by a freeway), and picks up the only book that is in every motel room (a Bible, of course -- a 'book full of death,' perhaps because lots of people get killed in the Bible but also because it focuses on death and what may come after). He becomes haunted by a longing for heaven, and here the song takes off from John 14:2 (Jesus saying 'My Father's house has many rooms' in the Revised Standard Version). He is willing to pray to anyone who can get to heaven ('like a pagan,' a phrase that has offended some of the pagans posting on this web site), and regrets the wrongs he has done in his life in light of this view of an eternal destiny. The song is not conventionally Christian, but is an evocation of a postmodern man haunted by the Christian promise of eternity. Much more interesting mucically than many rock songs, too.

I love this song! The first time I heared it I was just overwhelmed by the emotions put into the lyrics. While it might sound like a love song, the song is actually about waiting to die. All of the people around him have died and he's waiting in this house of death to join them! So, while it may seem trivial to some,I totally feel the message behind these lyrics.

I think this song is one of the most mediocre pieces of song writing I have ever heard.
Audioslave are a money making exercise and are fooling most of you with their credentials.
The Christian imagery in the lyrics is a load of cliche twaddle and my little sister could write a better tune in the bath. Who cares if he can sing.. The song stinks! History will proove it

AWESOME song. I'm not even going to get into why I like it, but most of the previous pro-Audioslave posts covered it enough. 1 more thing...all the people knockin' the song probably need to say more than 'this song sucks! Chris Cornell sucks! or Audioslave sucks!' ....seriously....if you have something bad to say about the song, I'll listen....but it has to strike at least one of my brain cells.

First off, what a hell of a song! I get the impression that that Chris has gone through some hard times in his life. The lyrics in 'Show Me How To Live' and this song have a strong religious basis. There is no doubt in my mind that the book 'full of death' is the bible and he creates some strong emotions and mental images when he explains how he read 'untill the day was gone.' So many powerful allusions to religion in this song. Chris Cornell is one hell of a song writer. One of the best songs I have heard in a long time.

I'm an avid fan of both Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden, but when I heard that Chris Cornell would be replacing Zack de la Rocha, I'll admit that I was suspicious. The immediate thing that arose to mind was a mixture of Know Your Enemy with Chris singing Black Hole Sun; Both good songs, they just wouldn't go well together. And when I heard Cochise, I can't say I was too thrilled with their effort. But I guess I spoke too soon, because my opinion turned a complete 180 when I heard this song. Because unlike past ventures, the Rage members display a certain characteristic that could never be conquered with Zack in the picture: A certain mellow sensitivity. However, the definitive moment of the song is Tom Morello's guitar solo. It's not a truly complex solo, I'm sure a beginner could decipher the basics. And as that may be, you still believe and absorb every single note he plays.

I agree with Bob. Cornell's nihilistic/religious lyrics and images are brilliant in this one. It's one of those rare moments where the music and lyrics feed off of each other.
I find these lines interesting:
To a place I recall
I was there so long ago
The sky was bruised
The wine was bled
And there you led me on
Seems Cornell had some sort of religious vision. It is interesting because he doesn't ascribe it to Jesus or God, even though bleeding wine is a Christian symbol and the idea of someone leading us down a path is Christ-like. But he just hints at this. What he does say, in fact, is:
On my deathbed I will pray
To the gods and the angels
Like a pagan to anyone
Who will take me to heaven
So he doesn't care who it was in his vision. It doesn't matter. He just wants to realize it again. And I think that's how a lot of us feel today. Skeptical of traditional religion, yet still drawn to it.
This is fantastic writing. Combined with Cornell's vocals and sweeping guitar work, I can't get enough of this haunting, brilliant song.

Heard this on the radio months ago and just had to have it. Why is it when the melody and rhythms are arresting the lyrics almost always are too? I couldn't understand a word from Chris Cornell's artistically novocained mouth then, but finally I get the lyrics, thanks to the proprietors of this site (errors notwithstanding).
After listening a few times I have the strong impression the book full of death is the Bible, and the house he longs to be in is 'the house of the lord', the house of -- whatever benevolence created us then left us ... alone. Read the lyrics again and see how many religious allusions there are.
There's blasphemous sarcasm at the end of the first verse: 'If we're good we'll lay to rest anywhere we want to go'. Instead of an afterlife fulfilment of our fondest wishes, the wish most reliably fulfilled is the choice of a gravesite.
Yeah it's bleak. I can understand how some people would not like it. How many people are so masochistically honest as to face the bleakest aspects of human existence?

I wanted to like this song, I did. Chris Cornell? One of the greatest vocalists of the nineties. Rage Against the Machine? An awesome band I've liked quite often, when their singer didn't get in the way. This should have worked awesomely. And it just... didn't. I got the CD as a gift, and none of the songs struck a chord with me, least of all this one, which is drab and boring, as is the case with most Soundgarden wannabes.

I like this song - the singer has a great voice. I'm still trying to figure out what it means though.
I agree with Meghan - this song loses points because of the pagan thing. For the record, pagans don't pray to many gods because we think that if we cast the net really wide one of the deities will eventually have mercy on us - we pray to many deities because we believe there are many incarnations of the same energy.

I don't know why whenever I listen to 'Like A Stone' on the radio, I tend to turn up the volume just to enjoy this track. Audioslave, from what I know, is a new band formed by former rock band members of Rage Against The Machine. Because of that, my first impression towards Audioslave is that they are gonna play hard rock music. It's true though as proved in their first single 'Cohise'. However, they proved me wrong when they released 'Like A Stone'. This song is light in terms of sound and the lyrics is quite interesting too. I love the voice of the lead vocalist as he's singing with passion! Haha.... Quite interesting. Keep it up, Audioslave.

very good, very catchy. the sounds Tom Morello makes with the guitar (especially the solo) are amazing. for the record, I don't think Audioslave will be a one and done. Cornell is excited to work with Morello (and in Morello's case, likewise). and as far as 'spinoff' bands go, look at how well the Foo Fighters have done.

Chris Cornell's new band (which includes members of Rage against the Machine and Soundgarden) comes through with another great song. Like A Stone features Cornell's voice at his grittiest and has some interesting guitar riffs. The end of the song is really great too. Another great track to build off Cochise (hopefully Gasonline is released as a single soon!)
