Kathy 15:22:03 10/22/09 My 9 year old daughter has been suffering constipation problems, and I decided to give her an enema. I went to Walgreens and was in the process of buying a Fleets enema, when I remembered when I was this age the enemas my mom gave me. I purchased a fountain syringe. When I arrived home, I explained to her that mommy will relieve her tummy ache. I told her to get undressed and wrap a towel around her and come into the bathroom. When she came in I asked her to get up on the bath countertop and lay her head on the pillow with her hind end facing me. I explained to her that mommy will instill some warm water up her hind end and that would make her poop. I also explained it would not hurt. I prepared a 1 quart warm soap water enema and hung the bag on the towel rack. I lubricated her rectum and nozzle and inserted it into her and released the clamp. I explained to her that she may have some cramping. It took about 5 minutes to empty the bag into her , and I told her to hold it. I placed her on the toilet to expel. You could hear the water, gas and poop being expelled. After about 15 minutes she said she felt better. I checked the results in the toilet, and was amazed of the volume. Like my mom used to tell me. Sounds like she needs more fiber in her diet. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] [> Subject: Re: Good Enemas Author: Joyce [Edit] Date Posted: 17:17:47 10/22/09 Thu More fiber might help, but maybe not. I have two girls, both close in age. They eat pretty much the same diet. One almost never needs an enema while the other one needs frequent enemas. Even in the same family and with the same diet kids can have different enema needs. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] [> Subject: Re: Good Enemas Author: Sunshine [Edit] Date Posted: 23:06:34 10/22/09 Thu Kathy sounds like she needs a regular routine of enemas. At least every other week Soap suds and a rinse. She will soon be starting her monthly that would be a good time to start if she hasn't already started. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] [> Subject: Re: Good Enemas Author: Alice [Edit] Date Posted: 15:08:57 10/23/09 Fri Kathy, if your little girl has needed only one enema in nine years, you are certainly feeding her right. I would not agree with Sunshine that the child needs an enema every two weeks, but I would agree that giving her some enemas is a good idea to get her used to having enemas for periods, whenever that may be. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] [> Subject: Re: Good Enemas Author: Barb [Edit] Date Posted: 15:47:21 10/23/09 Fri One enema in 9 years?! That is not anywhere near a constipation problem. You just have a normal child who had her system get a little out of sorts. I would not give her another enema until either she tells you that she's backed up or you have other evidence. It does sound like she took that first one like an adult and you should not have a problem in the future. Most moms should be so lucky. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] [> Subject: Re: Good Enemas Author: Sue [Edit] Date Posted: 16:52:41 10/23/09 Fri The post made by Joyce about kids being so different is very true. I have a 14 year old and a soon-to-be 16 year old. Both girls have bowels that lock up (as do mine) just before periods start. The 14 year old is a dream to enema. It's like her bottom just sucks in the soapy water. The older one is another story. It takes a lot of coaxing and encouragement to get an enema into her. I give both girls the same quantity (1 and 1/2 quarts). It's been, with the exception of the quantity given, the same situation since they were little girls getting bulb enemas. The older one just has a harder time with them than does her younger sister. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] [> Subject: Re: Good Enemas Author: Diana [Edit] Date Posted: 19:49:51 10/23/09 Fri The best part about your initial message was 'one quart.' Too off moms think bigger is better. My mom always felt smaller, but several enemas, was better. For my kids, like my mom, I usually started with a pint, then the second enema was aa little bigger, but I never went beyond a quart until they were in their teens. Also, I never gave them their enemas at an early age unless we were home alone. I'd send the other kids to the store with dad, and told him to do anything for at least an hour. I know the others knew what was going on -- especially when one daughter got an enema, but then next week went with dad shopping for any hour. Regardless of anyone knowing, the privacy of being home alone, made the situation so much better. Oh, and I never had them wrap in a towel ... simply because it was her and me and no one else around. I think each enjoyed the freedom this allowed. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]
