THO 100 Update for the week ending January 23, 2010

Since the TopHitsOnline chart began seventeen years ago, there have only been 10 songs to stay at #1 longer than 10 weeks. Lady GaGa's current #1, "Bad Romance" is one of them. This week the song holds off hits from Ke$ha and Owl City to remain on top. "Romance" still has a large point lead, which means that the all-time THO record of 15 weeks at #1 is in jeopardy. That record is held by Cher with her hit "Believe" (1999) and Madonna with "You'll See" (1995-1996). Madonna's "HungUp" is the most recent song to spend more than ten weeks at #1, in 2005-2006. On the current chart, GaGa's "Telephone" moves back into the top 10 as does Alicia Keys' "Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart." "Replay" by Iyaz has the chart's largest point gain.

THO 100 Update for week ending January 2, 2010

Just two years ago, Adam Young (aka Owl City) was making music out of his parents' basement. Since then, he's had a Billboard #1 Hot 100 hit, a top ten album, and one of the most downloaded songs of 2009 and 2010 (so far). This week Owl City's "Fireflies" flies up to #2 on the THO 100, replacing Rihanna's "Russian Roulette" as the runner-up to Lady GaGa's unstoppable hit "Bad Romance." Owl City's album, "Ocean Eyes," is their first with a major record label, and "Fireflies" is actually the fourth single to be released from the album. Young has been accused of ripping off electronica favorite The Postal Service, but we say What's Wrong With That?

THO 100 Update for week ending November 7, 2009

UK sensation Cheryl Cole keeps her post atop the THO 100 this week with "Fight For This Love." Cole barely holds off Britney Spears, whose latest single "3" appears poised to take over the #1 position next week. "3" moves from #5 to #2 this week. Other gainers inside the top 10 are Leona Lewis, Black Eyed Peas, and Owl City. This week marks the 52nd chart week (one entire year) for "Use Somebody" by Kings Of Leon. The song first appeared on the November 15, 2008 THO 100 and hasn't left since. It joins a short list of only 16 other songs to spend 52 weeks on the chart. Despite its longetivity, "Use Somebody" has not cracked the top 10, peaking at #11. Currently at #81, it has a shot at remaining on the chart beyond this week. Only 10 songs have spent more than 52 weeks on the chart. The record is 85 weeks by Alanis Morissette's "You Learn."
