Top Songs of 2008...So Far

There are still about 15 weeks left in 2008, but the top songs of the year are starting to shape up. Through TopHitsOnline's September 6th chart, Leona Lewis led with "Bleeding Love," which just left the chart after a 48-week run. Rihanna has two songs in the top 10, and that doesn't even include her current #1 hit "Disturbia." Once again this year, it looks like the year-end top songs will be dominated by female artists, which you'll see from the list below:

1. Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love
2. OneRepublic - Stop And Stare
3. Sara Bareilles - Love Song
4. Duffy - Mercy
5. Jordin Sparks f/ Chris Brown - No Air
6. Madonna f/ Justin Timberlake - 4 Minutes
7. Rihanna - Don't Stop The Music
8. Rihanna - Take A Bow
9. Britney Spears - Piece Of Me
10. Mariah Carey - Touch My Body

Top Songs of 2008... So Far

We are barely past the halfway point of 2008 - a good time to take a look at the year's top songs... so far. This list is compiled by adding each THO chart from 2008. The top 10 is dominated by female solo artists, but it is a male group that has two songs on the list. And two of the most popular artists of the past two decades are topped by a newcomer...

1. Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love
2. OneRepublic - Stop And Stare
3. Sara Bareilles - Love Song
4. Duffy - Mercy
5. Rihanna - Don't Stop The Music
6. Madonna f/ Justin Timberlake - 4 Minutes
7. Britney Spears - Piece Of Me
8. Timbaland f/ OneRepublic - Apologize
9. Jordin Sparks f/ Chris Brown - No Air
10. Mariah Carey - Touch My Body

THO 100 Update for week ending April 19, 2008

In only its fifth week on the chart, Madonna's "4 Minutes" (featuring Justin Timberlake) takes over the top spot on the THO 100. It is Madonna's 18th chart-topper, by far the most of any artist and double the next-closest artist (Mariah Carey with nine). Although he is a featured artist, it is Justin Timberlake's second #1 hit, following "Cry Me A River" in 2002. He also had two #1 hits as a member of 'N Sync. "4 Minutes" displaces OneRepublic's "Stop And Stare," which spent five weeks at the top.

THO 100 Update for the week ending April 12, 2008

We are somewhat surprised, but OneRepublic was able to hang on for one more week at #1 on the THO 100 with their smash "Stop And Stare." It barely tops Madonna's "4 Minutes" (featuring Justin Timberlake), which we expect to be next week's top song. But a darkhorse has emerged in all of this: Chris Brown's "With You." The song has built momentum slowly and is currently the most-played song on U.S. radio stations. It sits at #3 for a third consecutive week but is definitely in contention for #1 next week if the momentum continues. Hope you enjoy the chart this week!

THO 100 Update for the week ending April 5, 2008

While OneRepublic spends a fourth week atop the THO 100, there are at least three new songs that will challenge for the top position very soon. The first is Madonna with her latest "4 Minutes" (featuring Justin Timberlake). This week the song is the largest point gainer for the second time. The largest chart move this week belongs to Estelle with "American Boy" (featuring Kanye West), who moves up 40 positions after claiming the #1 position on the U.K. national chart. The third threat is Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body," which remains at #5 this week but is still gaining fast. We think there will be a new #1 next week, but the data will dictate if that is true. Stay tuned.

THO 100 Update for the week ending March 29, 2008

It has been a few months since an artist had two songs simultaneously in the top 10 of the THO 100. This week Leona Lewis pulls off that feat, as "Bleeding Love" and "Better In Time" sit at #7 and #10, respectively. Both songs may remain in the top 10 for even longer, since "Bleeding Love" is still getting huge radio airplay in the U.S. and "Better In Time" is one of the U.K.'s biggest hits right now. Meanwhile, OneRepublic's "Stop And Stare" holds off Duffy again for a third consecutive week at #1. It's hard to predict what the next new #1 will be, but based on her previous history on the THO chart, we wouldn't bet against Mariah Carey.

THO 100 Update for the week ending March 22, 2008

Girls Aloud (pictured) may not be a household name in the United States, but the latest THO 100 chart is proof of their popularity elsewhere. The THO 100 is based on personal charts from all over the world, which explains why Girls Aloud's single "Can't Speak French" enters the top 10 this week. It is the Girls' 18th THO hit in only six years of chart action, but this is their first top 10 hit. Meanwhile, OneRepublic continues at #1 with "Stop And Stare," while losing some ground to #2 "Mercy" by Duffy, which is beginning to see airplay in the U.S. now.

OneRepublic Notches Another #1 Hit

One year ago relatively few people had heard of OneRepublic. But Timbaland had heard their music and mixed their song "Apologize." That version propelled the song to #1 on many worldwide charts, including the THO 100 where it stayed at #1 for nine weeks. With radio stations more aware of OneRepublic, they began playing another track of theirs, "Stop And Stare." This week it lands at #1 on the THO 100, displacing Rihanna's "Don't Stop The Music," which spent five weeks at the top. We've published the latest THO chart for the week ending March 15th.

THO 100 Update for the week ending March 8, 2008

The THO 100 has been updated for the week ending March 8th. It's a fifth, and probably last week at #1 for Rihanna's smash hit "Don't Stop The Music." That's because OneRepublic's "Stop And Stare" moves up to #2 just barely behind Rihanna. Chris Brown is the only new entry into the top 10, but there are several new entries into the top 40 including R.E.M., Girls Aloud, Mariah Carey, MGMT, and Jordin Sparks. There are also 10 new entries into the top 100 this week.

THO 100 Update for the week ending February 23, 2008

This week on the THO 100 Rihanna remains at #1 with her hit "Don't Stop The Music," but she may not be there long. The song loses points while OneRepublic (pictured) has the song with the largest point gain in "Stop And Stare." OneRepublic, still better-known for their smash collaboration with Timbaland in "Apologize," move up to #3. Could a band that most people barely know anything about have their second number one hit? Check out the full chart here.

THO 100 Update

In December it looked like Alicia Keys might get her second #1 hit on the THO chart with "No One." Her first single, "Fallin'," went to #1 back in 2001. But for the eighth consecutive week it sits at #2 stuck behind Timbaland's "Aplogize" (featuring OneRepublic). And even though Timbaland's hit is losing points quickly, Keys still may not get the top spot next week. That is because Britney Spears' new song "Piece Of Me" is storming up the chart. In its eighth week on the chart it sits at #3 with a nice point gain. Here is the current chart.

THO 100 Update for week ending January 12, 2008

Timbaland continues an amazing run of 8 consecutive weeks at #1 with "Apologize" (featuring OneRepublic). Further down the chart, OneRepublic debuts with a hit of his own, along with 12 other new songs. Radiohead is both the largest point gainer and had the largest chart move, as "Jigsaw Falling Into Place" moves from #90 to #18. Enjoy the new chart.
