THO's Top Songs of All-Time

The Top Hits Online chart began publishing weekly charts in 1993. The chart has always been based on personal charts published on the internet, and it always will be. The hits that appear on the chart are often different than what you might see on the US Billboard charts, and often the THO 100 has many international hits that receive no airplay in the US. We are proud to publish our list of top songs since that first THO chart in '93. It is led by Alanis Morissette's "You Learn," which spent a remarkable 85 weeks on the chart. Morissette has two songs in the top 5, the other being "Head Over Feet." The list is also scattered with several hits from Madonna and Mariah Carey, the two most successful artists of the era. The only current hit on the list is Lady GaGa's "Poker Face," at #25.

THO 100 Update for the week ending March 28, 2009

Franz Ferdinand is still probably best known for their hits "Take Me Out" and "Do You Want To," especially in the United States. But internationally they've had many hits, and this week their latest splashes onto the THO 100 at #35. "No You Girls" is from their new album "Tonight: Franz Ferdinand" and becomes their 10th THO chart hit.

Kelly Clarkson continues to hold off Lady GaGa for the #1 position, making it six weeks at #1 for "My Life Would Suck Without You." And speaking of Lady GaGa, she charts another song from her "The Fame" album: "Love Game," giving her four charting singles this week. Coldplay and Beyonce recently achieved the same feat. Mariah Carey holds the all-time records with six charting songs in the same week. Enjoy the new chart!

THO 100 Update for week ending January 3, 2009

The first post-holiday chart see Britney Spears still at #1, making it 7 weeks in a row for "Womanizer." And now her latest single, "Circus," climbs the chart to land at #14 and earn the largest point gainer award this week. Next week, Spears is likely to have two singles inside the top 10, something that Beyonce accomplishes this week. Her hit "If I Were A Boy" holds stead at #3 while "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" moves from #15 to #9. Further down the chart another diva, Mariah Carey, sees holiday popularity push her 15 year-old hit "All I Want For Christmas Is You" into the #91 position. This is the second time it has landed on the THO chart, following it's appearance around the holidays in 2007. With chart fans likely dropping holiday music from their charts and playlists, this song will likely disappear until the end of 2009. Hope you enjoy the first chart of 2009!

Top Holiday Songs of All-Time

With many radio stations playing holiday music continuously for several weeks now, it is time to begin THO's annual poll of the top holiday songs of all time. For the past two years, Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" has been the #1 song. Maybe this year we shouldn't expect anything different, since Mariah's hit is currently the most-played holiday song on radio stations according to Billboard's Top Holiday Songs chart. But as there are every year, there will be many votes for Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, and Wham!

2008 American Music Awards

On Sunday Nov 23rd the American Music Awards will be televised. The list of performers includes some of the biggest names in music: Coldplay, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, and Kanye West. As for the nominees, there are four big names who have been nominated for three awards: Chris Brown, Coldplay, Eagles, and Alicia Keys. All four of these have been nominated for the Artist of the Year award. Another interesting award is the Breakthrough Artist award, which is basically for Best New Artist, although some of the artists nominated started hitting the charts in 2007. We've created two polls for you to vote on your favorites:

THO 100 Update for the week ending September 20, 2008

For the third week in a row Rihanna claims the #1 position on the THO 100 with "Disturbia," holding off Katy Perry's former #1 "I Kissed A Girl." Once again this week, a bigger story is further down the chart where a female artist collaboration have the chart's largest point gain and largest chart move. The song is called "Just Stand Up!" and it is credited to Artists Stand Up To Cancer. It is one of the most superstar-filled collaborations for a song since "We Are The World." Leading the track is Beyonce (pictured), and also includes Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, Ashanti, Mary J. Blige, Natasha Bedingfield, Rihanna, LeAnn Rimes, Carrie Underwood, Melissa Etheridge, Keyshia Cole, Sheryl Crow, Leona Lewis, Ciara, and Fergie. How will this song fair on the radio and on personal charts? We didn't think it had top 10 potential, but so far so good... it moves from #66 to #26 this week.

The Billboard Hot 100 Celebrates 50 Years

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first Billboard Hot 100 chart. Along with the Official U.K. Chart, the Hot 100 is one of the most popular and lasting music charts in the world. Recently Billboard Magazine has been celebrating this anniversary by publishing several Top Songs/Artists lists based on Hot 100 data. One of the most interesting is their Top 100 of the Hot 100. Songs were ranked based on their popularity compared to other songs of the same era:

1. Chubby Checker - The Twist [hit #1 in 1960 and in 1962]
2. Santana f/ Rob Thomas - Smooth [#1 for 12 weeks]
3. Bobby Darin - Mack The Knife [#1 for 9 weeks; Grammy record of the year]
4. LeAnn Rimes - How Do I Live [69 weeks on the Hot 100]
5. Los Del Rio - Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix) [#1 for 14 weeks]
6. Olivia Newton-John - Physical [#1 for 10 weeks; multi-format smash]
7. Debby Boone - You Light Up My Life [#1 for 10 weeks; Grammy best original song]

Top Songs of 2008...So Far

There are still about 15 weeks left in 2008, but the top songs of the year are starting to shape up. Through TopHitsOnline's September 6th chart, Leona Lewis led with "Bleeding Love," which just left the chart after a 48-week run. Rihanna has two songs in the top 10, and that doesn't even include her current #1 hit "Disturbia." Once again this year, it looks like the year-end top songs will be dominated by female artists, which you'll see from the list below:

1. Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love
2. OneRepublic - Stop And Stare
3. Sara Bareilles - Love Song
4. Duffy - Mercy
5. Jordin Sparks f/ Chris Brown - No Air
6. Madonna f/ Justin Timberlake - 4 Minutes
7. Rihanna - Don't Stop The Music
8. Rihanna - Take A Bow
9. Britney Spears - Piece Of Me
10. Mariah Carey - Touch My Body

THO 100 Update for the week ending July 26, 2008

It's a pretty quiet chart this week, with very little movement inside the top 10. Coldplay hangs on for a fourth week at #1 with "Viva La Vida," while Madonna and Katy Perry still sit at #2 and #3. One of the hottest songs on the chart is Kid Rock's "All Summer Long." It has been pushing up several international charts, including the US and UK. This might become Kid Rock's first THO number one hit. But he might have to eventually fight off this week's highest debut: Mariah Carey's "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time." It joins five other new songs onto the chart this week.

Coldplay Back On The Charts

This week on the THO 100 Coldplay returns for the first time since 2006's "The Hardest Part." The lead single from their new album, "Violet Hill" has a huge debut at #24. It is also Coldplay's 13th THO hit, which started in 2000 with "Yellow." With 13 chart hits, they are added to our list of artists with the most songs to chart on the THO 100. They certainly have a long way to go to reach the 46 hits by the leader, Mariah Carey. We have also created a poll for fans to pick their favorite Coldplay song.

THO 100 Update for the week ending May 3, 2008

In the week in which Natasha Bedingfield (pictured) appeared on American Idol (and gushed over David Archuleta), she is the greatest point gainer on the THO 100. The song she performed on Idol was "Pocketful of Sunshine," which rockets from #38 to #18 on this weeks' chart. Although top 10 status seems inevitable for this song, it will be hard to overcome the current hits at the top by Madonna, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, and Usher. "4 Minutes" (featuring Justin Timberlake) continues to widen the gap between #1 and #2, and a new #1 before June, or maybe even July, seems unlikely.

THO 100 Update for the week ending April 26, 2008

This week on the THO 100, Jordin Sparks' duet with Chris Brown, "No Air," accomplishes something her lead single "Tattoo" could not do: reach the top 10. "No Air" moves from #15 to #8 on the new chart. "Tattoo" peaked at #11 last month. Also on the chart this week, Madonna's "4 Minutes" (featuring Justin Timberlake) widens its lead at #1 over fellow divas Mariah Carey and Britney Spears. This song's stay at the top could be a long one...

THO 100 Update for week ending April 19, 2008

In only its fifth week on the chart, Madonna's "4 Minutes" (featuring Justin Timberlake) takes over the top spot on the THO 100. It is Madonna's 18th chart-topper, by far the most of any artist and double the next-closest artist (Mariah Carey with nine). Although he is a featured artist, it is Justin Timberlake's second #1 hit, following "Cry Me A River" in 2002. He also had two #1 hits as a member of 'N Sync. "4 Minutes" displaces OneRepublic's "Stop And Stare," which spent five weeks at the top.

THO 100 Update for the week ending April 5, 2008

While OneRepublic spends a fourth week atop the THO 100, there are at least three new songs that will challenge for the top position very soon. The first is Madonna with her latest "4 Minutes" (featuring Justin Timberlake). This week the song is the largest point gainer for the second time. The largest chart move this week belongs to Estelle with "American Boy" (featuring Kanye West), who moves up 40 positions after claiming the #1 position on the U.K. national chart. The third threat is Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body," which remains at #5 this week but is still gaining fast. We think there will be a new #1 next week, but the data will dictate if that is true. Stay tuned.

THO 100 Update for the week ending March 29, 2008

It has been a few months since an artist had two songs simultaneously in the top 10 of the THO 100. This week Leona Lewis pulls off that feat, as "Bleeding Love" and "Better In Time" sit at #7 and #10, respectively. Both songs may remain in the top 10 for even longer, since "Bleeding Love" is still getting huge radio airplay in the U.S. and "Better In Time" is one of the U.K.'s biggest hits right now. Meanwhile, OneRepublic's "Stop And Stare" holds off Duffy again for a third consecutive week at #1. It's hard to predict what the next new #1 will be, but based on her previous history on the THO chart, we wouldn't bet against Mariah Carey.

THO 100 Update for the week ending March 8, 2008

The THO 100 has been updated for the week ending March 8th. It's a fifth, and probably last week at #1 for Rihanna's smash hit "Don't Stop The Music." That's because OneRepublic's "Stop And Stare" moves up to #2 just barely behind Rihanna. Chris Brown is the only new entry into the top 10, but there are several new entries into the top 40 including R.E.M., Girls Aloud, Mariah Carey, MGMT, and Jordin Sparks. There are also 10 new entries into the top 100 this week.

Mariah Carey Extends All-Time THO Song Lead

No artist has had more songs on the THO 100 than Mariah Carey. This week on the THO chart she adds to her total with "Touch My Body." The THO chart began in 1993, so the list is even missing some of Mariah's biggest hits of her career in 1991-1992. Nevertheless, she leads Madonna, Janet, and Shania on the all-time list of most songs on the THO chart. We've created a poll to determine fans' favorite Mariah songs of all-time. Because of the large number of hits, we've limited the list to only her top 10 Billboard or THO hits. Vote on the Mariah Carey song poll here.

THO 100 Update for the week ending March 1, 2008

This week Mariah Carey adds to an already impressive list of hits with new single "Touch My Body." It is the highest debuting song on the THO 100 this week, and is pulled from her new album E=MC2, due April 15th. At the top of the chart it is status quo, as the top 4 songs remain the same. However, Duffy's big UK hit "Mercy" breaks into the top 10 and is the largest point gainer on the chart. See the full THO 100 here.
