THO 100 Update for the week ending September 20, 2008

For the third week in a row Rihanna claims the #1 position on the THO 100 with "Disturbia," holding off Katy Perry's former #1 "I Kissed A Girl." Once again this week, a bigger story is further down the chart where a female artist collaboration have the chart's largest point gain and largest chart move. The song is called "Just Stand Up!" and it is credited to Artists Stand Up To Cancer. It is one of the most superstar-filled collaborations for a song since "We Are The World." Leading the track is Beyonce (pictured), and also includes Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, Ashanti, Mary J. Blige, Natasha Bedingfield, Rihanna, LeAnn Rimes, Carrie Underwood, Melissa Etheridge, Keyshia Cole, Sheryl Crow, Leona Lewis, Ciara, and Fergie. How will this song fair on the radio and on personal charts? We didn't think it had top 10 potential, but so far so good... it moves from #66 to #26 this week.

The Billboard Hot 100 Celebrates 50 Years

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first Billboard Hot 100 chart. Along with the Official U.K. Chart, the Hot 100 is one of the most popular and lasting music charts in the world. Recently Billboard Magazine has been celebrating this anniversary by publishing several Top Songs/Artists lists based on Hot 100 data. One of the most interesting is their Top 100 of the Hot 100. Songs were ranked based on their popularity compared to other songs of the same era:

Artist Rankings Updated

Since we last updated our all-time rankings of artists with the most songs in THO's chart history (dating back to 1993), several artists on the list have added to their totals. Most notable is Janet Jackson, whose latest hit "Feedback" gives her 27 hits since '93. She is now tied for third place on the list with LeAnn Rimes. Other artists that move up the chart include Mary J. Blige, Radiohead, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion, and Sugababes. The only new artist to appear on the list, now with 13 total hits, is Kanye West. With the addition of all 2007 chart data, our All Time list of Top Artists, by number of songs on the THO 100, has been updated. The top 3 artists - Mariah Carey, Madonna, and LeAnn Rimes - each had one song on the THO 100 in 2007. Artists making significant moves up the list included Justin Timberlake, Sugababes, and Girls Aloud.
