THO 100 Update for the week ending November 22, 2008

Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" was only able to reign over the THO 100 for a single week. Britney Spears' "Womanizer" takes over the top spot this week, giving Spears her second #1 song of 2008. The first was "Piece Of Me," which hit #1 back in January. Only eight artists have had #1 songs in 2008, and now four of them have had two number ones: Spears, Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Coldplay. Overall, "Womanizer" is Britney's seventh #1 song. Her first #1 was "Oops!...I Did It Again" in 2000, after her first three hits peaked at #2 ("...Baby One More Time," "Sometimes," and "(You Drive Me) Crazy". She trails only Madonna and Mariah Carey for the most #1s on the Top Hits Online chart, which began in 1993.

THO 100 Update for the week ending November 15, 2008

Pink's six week run at #1 ends this week as "So What" drops to the runner-up slot. Taking its place is "Hot N Cold," the second #1 single from Katy Perry. Earlier this year "I Kissed A Girl" spent three weeks atop the chart. "I Kissed A Girl" is still hanging around the chart at #42 after 24 weeks. Perry will certainly be one of the top artists of 2008 when our year-end artist chart is published at the end of December. Perry's real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson. She was born in Santa Barbara, California, the daughter of two pastors. In fact, her first CD released in 2001, called "Katy Hudson," was a Christian gospel album. Now her music and her outfits are pretty far removed from gospel... Enjoy the new chart this week!

THO 100 Update for week ending November 8, 2008

This week on the THO 100 Pink spends a sixth week atop the chart with "So What." It becomes the third song in 2008 to spend as many weeks on top, following Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" and Madonna's "4 Seconds" (featuring Justin Timberlake). But with the song showing signs of fading, there might be a new #1 next week. The question is who? Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" and Britney Spears' "Womanizer" seem to be the most likely candidates, but Beyonce's "If I Were A Boy" just bounced into the top 10 in only its third week on the chart. A little further down the chart, the largest point gain belongs to English band Razorlight. Their hit "Wire To Wire" sits at #27 after only two weeks and is #15 on the official UK chart.

THO 100 Update for the week ending October 25, 2008

Pink holds on to the #1 position on the THO 100 this week with "So What." The top five spots are held by solo female artists, three of which will be major challengers for #1 in the coming weeks. At #3 is Katy Perry, who already scored a #1 hit earlier this year with "I Kissed A Girl." At #4 is Britney Spears, who is the greatest point gainer for the second consecutive week. At #5 is Christina Aguilera, who already has five #1 hits to her credit on the THO chart. How can men compete with female superstars like these?

THO 100 Update for the week ending October 18, 2008

Pink and Rihanna hold on to the top 2 spots on the THO 100 this week. Katy Perry moves from #8 to #3 and looks like a serious challenger for the #1 position in the coming weeks. Further down at #58 is the highest debut of the week by T.I. (featuring Rihanna). "Live Your Life" samples from the worldwide smash hit "Dragostea din tei" by O-Zone. O-Zone's hit went to #1 in several countries and reached #3 on the official U.K. chart. In the United States it barely made a splash, and was probably more well-known for the crazy lip-synching "Numa Numa" YouTube video by Gary Brolsma.

THO 100 Update for the week ending September 20, 2008

For the third week in a row Rihanna claims the #1 position on the THO 100 with "Disturbia," holding off Katy Perry's former #1 "I Kissed A Girl." Once again this week, a bigger story is further down the chart where a female artist collaboration have the chart's largest point gain and largest chart move. The song is called "Just Stand Up!" and it is credited to Artists Stand Up To Cancer. It is one of the most superstar-filled collaborations for a song since "We Are The World." Leading the track is Beyonce (pictured), and also includes Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, Ashanti, Mary J. Blige, Natasha Bedingfield, Rihanna, LeAnn Rimes, Carrie Underwood, Melissa Etheridge, Keyshia Cole, Sheryl Crow, Leona Lewis, Ciara, and Fergie. How will this song fair on the radio and on personal charts? We didn't think it had top 10 potential, but so far so good... it moves from #66 to #26 this week.

THO 100 Update for week ending September 6, 2008

Katy Perry's run of three weeks atop the THO 100 with "I Kissed A Girl" comes to an end with the latest THO 100 chart. Rihanna notches her fourth #1 with "Disturbia," which follows "Don't Stop The Music" earlier in 2008. Her other two number ones were "SOS (Rescue Me)" and "Umbrella" (featuring Jay-Z). Perry may not need to wait long for her second #1, as "Hot N Cold" races up to #48 this week from #83 last week. Also of note on this week's chart: Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" exits the chart after a 48-week run. Only 15 songs have ever managed to spend 52 weeks (one full year) on this chart, the last one being James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" in 2005 and 2006. There is another song currently hanging on the chart that may get to 52... Sara Bareilles' "Love Song," which sits at #81 after 49 weeks on the chart.

THO 100 Update for week ending August 30, 2008

Keane has probably had more success on the THO 100 than any other national chart. They may not get the radio airplay or sales to place high on other charts, but their songs are often rated high on personal charts that make up the THO 100. A new album is on the way, and the first single, "Spiralling," certainly has a different sound than previous efforts. After being the highest debut last week, this week it is the largest point gainer. This is the third week at the top of the chart for Katy Perry, and probably the last for a while. Rihanna's "Disturbia" is closing fast and could overtake "I Kissed A Girl" next week. Also on the chart this week: Lady GaGa enters the top 10 for the first time, while The Script and Pink enter the top 20 with new songs.

THO 100 Update for week ending August 23, 2008

We're not sure if her name is Pink or P!nk, but in either case she has the highest debut on the chart this week with new single "So What." It comes from an album that hasn't been released yet, but at least you can download the single. Pink has had five #1 hits on the THO 100, and now 19 hits overall. Meanwhile, Katy Perry holds on with current #1 "I Kissed A Girl," which beats Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" and Rihanna's "Disturbia." Rihanna's hit has the best chance of becoming the next #1, and it could happen as soon as next week. Other debuts this week come from Keane, Duffy, Madcon, Jonas Brothers, Late of the Pier, O.A.R., Glasvegas, and Melee.

THO 100 Update for the week ending August 16, 2008

Coldplay's string of six weeks atop the THO 100 ends this week, as "Viva La Vida" gives way to the equally huge international success of Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl." Perry's hit lands at #1 in its 11th week on the chart and also has the largest point gain this week. Will it last the same six weeks that Coldplay managed? The only thing that might stop it is Rihanna's "Disturbia," which moves from #10 to #4 this week. Further down the chart, several UK and Australian hits by Gabriella Cilmi, Little Jackie, Cascada, Fleet Foxes, BWO, and Eric Prydz enter the chart with new songs.

THO 100 Update for the week ending August 9, 2008

Her string of chart successes only began in the second half of 2005, but only three years later Rihanna has racked up nine top 10 hits. The latest hit the top 10 this week, as "Disturbia" is the THO 100's greatest point gainer and moves from #16 to #10. Along the way Rihanna has had three #1 hits: "SOS (Rescue Me)" in early 2006, "Umbrella" (featuring Jay-Z) last year, and "Don't Stop The Music" also last year. We don't believe "Disturbia" will have the legs to become her fourth #1, especially given the competition currently ahead of her: namely Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" and Kid Rock's "All Summer Long," but we'll have to wait and see.

THO 100 Update for the week ending August 2, 2008

No news is good news for Coldplay, as they claim a fifth week atop the THO 100 with "Viva La Vida." They still hold a sizable advantage over #2 Madonna and #3 Katy Perry. But with Perry's big splash on the UK chart this week, it looks like she is the most likely candidate to reach #1 next. Our artist spotlight goes to Kylie Minogue, who notches her 14th top 20 hit on this chart (which began in 1993) with "The One." Out of her last 14 hits, 13 have reached the top 20, with the only exception being the recent "In My Arms." "The One" is also the greatest point gainer this week.

THO 100 Update for the week ending July 26, 2008

It's a pretty quiet chart this week, with very little movement inside the top 10. Coldplay hangs on for a fourth week at #1 with "Viva La Vida," while Madonna and Katy Perry still sit at #2 and #3. One of the hottest songs on the chart is Kid Rock's "All Summer Long." It has been pushing up several international charts, including the US and UK. This might become Kid Rock's first THO number one hit. But he might have to eventually fight off this week's highest debut: Mariah Carey's "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time." It joins five other new songs onto the chart this week.

THO 100 Update for the week ending July 19, 2008

Most people in the U.S. have not heard of Dizzee Rascal. But elsewhere in the world, the multi-talented Dizzee is becoming a superstar. He's a rapper, producer, actor, and he won the Mercury Prize for his 2003 album Boy in da Corner. This week his latest single, "Dance Wiv Me," is the largest point gainer on the THO 100 and moves from #37 to #14. At the top of the new chart, Coldplay hangs on at #1 for a third week, as Madonna's "Give It 2 Me" slides into the #2 slot. Once Coldplay gives up the crown, it will be interesting to see if it is Madonna who will grab another #1 hit, or newcomer Katy Perry with her smash "I Kissed A Girl."
