THO 100 for week ending January 30, 2010

Hip Hop superstar Jay-Z has reigned as one of the biggest names in the business for many years. With every successive album and single, he cements that status further, and the latest single is no exception. This week on the THO 100, "Young Forever" is both the greatest point gainer and has the largest chart move, up from #81 to #39. The song features Mr. Hudson, who also collaborated with Kanye West on two of his hits. Eighties music fans probably recognized the song samples "Forever Young" by Alphaville. Back in the earlier days of "alternative rock" radio, "Forever Young" was often voted as one of the top songs of all-time for that genre. Jay-Z's hit is his 20th THO hit, which started with "Can I Get A..." in 1998.

Top Artists of 2009

With the #1 song of 2009 plus two others in the top 10, it was no secret who would be the #1 artist of 2009 after all the data was compiled. Lady GaGa easily bests the competition after finishing at #28 in the 2008 artist chart. She charted 11 songs on the THO 100 which logged a total of 165 weeks on the chart, 119 inside the top 40, and 58 inside the top 10. Using THO's point system, Lady GaGa had the best single year of any artist in THO's history (beginning in 1993). The previous best was Mariah Carey in 1994. Mariah finished at #33 on the 2009 artist chart. Three other divas followed GaGa at #2-#4: Beyonce, Britney Spears, and Kelly Clarkson. Kanye West and Akon were the only solo male artists to crack the top 10. Last year's #1 artist, Rihanna, was #18.

Top Artists of 2008

Rihanna had seven different songs appear on the THO 100 in 2008, with two of them reaching #1. She therefore is the runaway winner in our chart of the Top Artists of 2008. "Don't Stop The Music" spent five weeks atop the chart while "Disturbia" added four. Only the combination of Madonna and Justin Timberlake spent more weeks at #1 in 2008, with their hit "4 Minutes." Rihanna was #3 on the 2007 artist chart.

Two other artists had seven songs on the THO 100 in '08: Kanye West and Lil Wayne. Britney Spears, Chris Brown, and T-Pain each had six hits. The success of Brown's six hits allowed him to be the #2 artist of the year. His songs spent a combined total of 107 weeks on the chart (about an average of two songs on the chart every week). Leona Lewis also had 107 weeks on the chart (Rihanna had 119).

Coldplay was the #1 group of the year, and they were #4 on the overall artist chart. Coldplay songs spent 34 weeks inside the top 10 in 2008. OneRepublic was the #2 group, coming in at #6 on the artist chart.

Veteran Artists Still Hitting The Charts

The latest charts are not always about the newest artists. This weeks' THO 100 is proof of that, as a bevy of veteran artists and groups have songs that debut. One of them is Sarah McLachlan, who first charted on THO in 1994. A group whose charting career also goes back to 1994, Weezer debut this week with "Troublemaker." Girls Aloud have the highest debut this week with "The Promise," their 20th chart hit. Snow Patrol earn their 13th chart hit, although two of those entries were for the same song in different years. T-Pain collaborates with Lil Wayne to collect his 14th chart entry. And Kanye West enters with "Love Lockdown," his 15th THO hit.

THO 100 Update for the week ending April 5, 2008

While OneRepublic spends a fourth week atop the THO 100, there are at least three new songs that will challenge for the top position very soon. The first is Madonna with her latest "4 Minutes" (featuring Justin Timberlake). This week the song is the largest point gainer for the second time. The largest chart move this week belongs to Estelle with "American Boy" (featuring Kanye West), who moves up 40 positions after claiming the #1 position on the U.K. national chart. The third threat is Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body," which remains at #5 this week but is still gaining fast. We think there will be a new #1 next week, but the data will dictate if that is true. Stay tuned.

2008 Grammy Awards

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Grammy Awards, which will be televised on February 10th. Kanye West leads all artists with eight nominations. Let's hope he keeps his cool this year if he doesn't win. With six nominations is troubled sensation Amy Winehouse. We know that sometimes the "best" artists don't seem to win the awards, so as usual we've created a few polls for you to vote for your favorites. Just look for the Grammy Polls at the top of our polls page, and while you are there also check out the winners from previous Grammy Awards.
