THO 100 Update for the week ending March 28, 2009

Franz Ferdinand is still probably best known for their hits "Take Me Out" and "Do You Want To," especially in the United States. But internationally they've had many hits, and this week their latest splashes onto the THO 100 at #35. "No You Girls" is from their new album "Tonight: Franz Ferdinand" and becomes their 10th THO chart hit.

Kelly Clarkson continues to hold off Lady GaGa for the #1 position, making it six weeks at #1 for "My Life Would Suck Without You." And speaking of Lady GaGa, she charts another song from her "The Fame" album: "Love Game," giving her four charting singles this week. Coldplay and Beyonce recently achieved the same feat. Mariah Carey holds the all-time records with six charting songs in the same week. Enjoy the new chart!

Top Artists of 2008

Rihanna had seven different songs appear on the THO 100 in 2008, with two of them reaching #1. She therefore is the runaway winner in our chart of the Top Artists of 2008. "Don't Stop The Music" spent five weeks atop the chart while "Disturbia" added four. Only the combination of Madonna and Justin Timberlake spent more weeks at #1 in 2008, with their hit "4 Minutes." Rihanna was #3 on the 2007 artist chart.

Two other artists had seven songs on the THO 100 in '08: Kanye West and Lil Wayne. Britney Spears, Chris Brown, and T-Pain each had six hits. The success of Brown's six hits allowed him to be the #2 artist of the year. His songs spent a combined total of 107 weeks on the chart (about an average of two songs on the chart every week). Leona Lewis also had 107 weeks on the chart (Rihanna had 119).

Coldplay was the #1 group of the year, and they were #4 on the overall artist chart. Coldplay songs spent 34 weeks inside the top 10 in 2008. OneRepublic was the #2 group, coming in at #6 on the artist chart.

Top Songs of 2008

Madonna & Justin Timberlake's "4 Minutes" might have spent the most weeks at #1 (10) on the THO 100 in 2008, but due to sheer staying power, Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" is THO's #1 Song of 2008. The Top Songs of 2008 chart is based on chart positions for all 2008 THO weekly charts, with an inverse exponential point system. "Viva" barely edges out Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love." If "Bleeding Love" had its full chart life in 2008, it would have been #1 for the year, but it was released in 2007 and even made #50 in the Top Songs of 2007 chart. Lewis was the only artist to have two songs place in the top 10, with "Better In Time" at #10. Rihanna had songs at #5, #12, #14, #48, and #73. She might be a frontrunner for the Top Artist of 2008, which will be published soon... MGMT had three songs on the chart, and two of them back-to-back at #52 and #53.

Alicia Keys' "No One" appeared on the 2007 and 2008 year-end charts, coincidentally in the same position of #37. Other songs to appear on this years' list that also appeared last year are: "Don't Stop The Music" by Rihanna (#12 in 2008, #51 in 2007), Timbaland's "Apologize" (#21 in 2008, #29 in 2007), Colbie Caillat's "Bubbly" (#94 in 2008, #44 in 2007), and Linkin Park's "Shadow Of The Day" (#45 in 2008, #92 in 2007).

THO 100 Update for the week ending November 22, 2008

Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" was only able to reign over the THO 100 for a single week. Britney Spears' "Womanizer" takes over the top spot this week, giving Spears her second #1 song of 2008. The first was "Piece Of Me," which hit #1 back in January. Only eight artists have had #1 songs in 2008, and now four of them have had two number ones: Spears, Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Coldplay. Overall, "Womanizer" is Britney's seventh #1 song. Her first #1 was "Oops!...I Did It Again" in 2000, after her first three hits peaked at #2 ("...Baby One More Time," "Sometimes," and "(You Drive Me) Crazy". She trails only Madonna and Mariah Carey for the most #1s on the Top Hits Online chart, which began in 1993.

THO 100 Update for week ending November 8, 2008

This week on the THO 100 Pink spends a sixth week atop the chart with "So What." It becomes the third song in 2008 to spend as many weeks on top, following Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" and Madonna's "4 Seconds" (featuring Justin Timberlake). But with the song showing signs of fading, there might be a new #1 next week. The question is who? Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" and Britney Spears' "Womanizer" seem to be the most likely candidates, but Beyonce's "If I Were A Boy" just bounced into the top 10 in only its third week on the chart. A little further down the chart, the largest point gain belongs to English band Razorlight. Their hit "Wire To Wire" sits at #27 after only two weeks and is #15 on the official UK chart.

THO 100 Update for the week ending August 16, 2008

Coldplay's string of six weeks atop the THO 100 ends this week, as "Viva La Vida" gives way to the equally huge international success of Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl." Perry's hit lands at #1 in its 11th week on the chart and also has the largest point gain this week. Will it last the same six weeks that Coldplay managed? The only thing that might stop it is Rihanna's "Disturbia," which moves from #10 to #4 this week. Further down the chart, several UK and Australian hits by Gabriella Cilmi, Little Jackie, Cascada, Fleet Foxes, BWO, and Eric Prydz enter the chart with new songs.

THO 100 Update for the week ending August 2, 2008

No news is good news for Coldplay, as they claim a fifth week atop the THO 100 with "Viva La Vida." They still hold a sizable advantage over #2 Madonna and #3 Katy Perry. But with Perry's big splash on the UK chart this week, it looks like she is the most likely candidate to reach #1 next. Our artist spotlight goes to Kylie Minogue, who notches her 14th top 20 hit on this chart (which began in 1993) with "The One." Out of her last 14 hits, 13 have reached the top 20, with the only exception being the recent "In My Arms." "The One" is also the greatest point gainer this week.

THO 100 Update for the week ending July 26, 2008

It's a pretty quiet chart this week, with very little movement inside the top 10. Coldplay hangs on for a fourth week at #1 with "Viva La Vida," while Madonna and Katy Perry still sit at #2 and #3. One of the hottest songs on the chart is Kid Rock's "All Summer Long." It has been pushing up several international charts, including the US and UK. This might become Kid Rock's first THO number one hit. But he might have to eventually fight off this week's highest debut: Mariah Carey's "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time." It joins five other new songs onto the chart this week.

THO 100 Update for the week ending July 19, 2008

Most people in the U.S. have not heard of Dizzee Rascal. But elsewhere in the world, the multi-talented Dizzee is becoming a superstar. He's a rapper, producer, actor, and he won the Mercury Prize for his 2003 album Boy in da Corner. This week his latest single, "Dance Wiv Me," is the largest point gainer on the THO 100 and moves from #37 to #14. At the top of the new chart, Coldplay hangs on at #1 for a third week, as Madonna's "Give It 2 Me" slides into the #2 slot. Once Coldplay gives up the crown, it will be interesting to see if it is Madonna who will grab another #1 hit, or newcomer Katy Perry with her smash "I Kissed A Girl."

THO 100 Update for the week ending June 28, 2008

It is hard to argue that Coldplay isn't the hottest band on the planet right now. They have one of the best-selling albums worldwide, two of the most downloaded songs, and now they collect their third number one hit on the THO 100. "Violet Hill" displaces Madonna's "4 Minutes" in the #1 spot after her 10-week run. The song follows "Clocks" in 2003 and "Talk" in 2006 as Coldplay number ones on the chart. In fact, "Talk" also displaced Madonna at #1 after her nine week run with "Sorry." But "Violet Hill" may not be at the top for long, as Coldplay's own "Viva La Vida" is the largest point gainer and moves up to #4 this week. Next week we could have the same band at #1 and #2. We'll have to check our records to find the last time that happened. Enjoy the chart!

THO 100 Update for the week ending June 14, 2008

Reba McEntire has had only moderate success on the THO 100, scoring 13 hits and one that broke the top 10 (1999's "What Do You Say"). But this week she is a star as "Every Other Weekend" (featuring Kenny Chesney) is the highest debut on the chart. It is her first THO hit since last year's "Because Of You" duet with Kelly Clarkson. Elsewhere on the chart, Coldplay is the largest point gainer in the same week that their new album "Viva La Vida..." drops. They also have the #2 song on the chart for a third consecutive week.

THO 100 Update for the week ending May 31, 2008

There are some big moves inside the top 10 of the THO 100 this week, but possibly the most surprising is the move by Sara Bareilles' "Love Song." If there is anyone living who has not heard this song, we want to hear from you, because this one seems to be everywhere. Now in its 35th week on the chart, it rises to a new high at #3. Reaching #1 is probably not possible though, not only because Madonna continues her lock on the top spot for the seventh consecutive week, but also because Coldplay bullets up to #2 and is the largest Point Gainer for the second time with "Violet Hill." Also, Rihanna moves from #10 to #4 with "Take A Bow."

This is the 100th post since starting this blog/feed in December - thank you very much for reading!

Coldplay Back On The Charts

This week on the THO 100 Coldplay returns for the first time since 2006's "The Hardest Part." The lead single from their new album, "Violet Hill" has a huge debut at #24. It is also Coldplay's 13th THO hit, which started in 2000 with "Yellow." With 13 chart hits, they are added to our list of artists with the most songs to chart on the THO 100. They certainly have a long way to go to reach the 46 hits by the leader, Mariah Carey. We have also created a poll for fans to pick their favorite Coldplay song.
