Top Songs of the Decade (2000s)

Billboard has done an excellent job producing their "Best of the 2000s" charts which are available for free on their website. The top song, as ranked by performance on the Billboard Hot 100, is Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together." It was #1 for 14 weeks in 2005 and stayed on the Hot 100 for 43 weeks. The Black Eyed Peas were the only artist/group to have two songs inside the top 10, as "I Gotta Feeling" was #5 and "Boom Boom Pow" was #7. Nickelback represented the lone rock act in the top 10. Scanning the top 100 is very interesting and fun, but we wish Billboard could put each song's year into the chart.

For the Fanatical Music Chart Fans: Record Research Books

If you are a fan of the Billboard charts, hopefully you are aware of Record Research. Joel Whitburn founded record research and publishes many books that summarize Billboard's most popular charts. The most popular is the Top Pop Singles book, which lists every song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1955, by artist. Similar books are available for the Country, R&B/Hip Hop, Dance, Rock, and Holiday charts. Soon they will be releasing "Top Country Songs 1944-2008," a must-have for country music fanatics. We own many of these books and we highly recommend them!

Keeping Up With The Music Industry

It is one thing to keep up with the hottest artists and songs. Keeping tabs on the ever-changing music industry is another animal altogether. Will increases in digital downloads make up for the drop in CD sales? Are subscription services the future of the industry? Questions like these are covered in the #1 music industry website: http://www.billboard.biz/, which is of course part of the original Billboard Magazine. This site is easily the most comprehensive, with a dedicated reporting and research staff continuously adding content. The best blogging site that we've found is Coolfer: http://www.coolfer.com/. This blog has great coverage of industry events and hot topics, with just the right touch of personal opinion mixed in. TopHitsOnline will continue to track the top songs and artists, but Billboard.biz and Coolfer are the authorities on industry happenings.
